Sort of along the lines of the UMD College Park meet earlier this year, another meet is being organized for this coming Saturday, Nov. 15th at Fort Hunt Park south of Alexandria, VA. The show starts at 12 noon but arriving earlier for parking is recommended

It is being planned as the end of year meet for all DC area exotics and Supra/Lexus/Viper/NSX/GTR etc. owners. Admission is free, planned events are the show and a cruise into Old Town Alexandria for photos

Anyone have a source to some decent OEM knockoff body parts? I know the deal with the fitment, but if the price is right then they will be going on the civic, and well I don't really care. Just want some un-dented and scratched body panels. Closer to NoVa, the better.

I haven't had a good rant in a long while, so here goes....

To hell with this town, and somewhat, with JMU itself. This place has gone right down the shitter in the last year.

This is the second year I have lived in an apartment (Squire Hills). Last year, I really couldn't complain much. College living being what it is, it wasn't perfect, but rent was fair, people were nice, and it was a safe community.

This year, our community has fallen into disrepair. Our AC system went out, part of our ceiling fell down, and on top of this, what was generally decrepit since the 1974 inception of our apartment has remained the same and...rent has increased. This whole community, and many others in the area, have just turned into cash cows with little/no and even negative improvement paralleled with increasing rent.

My car...last semester, someone slashed my rear tire. After those were replaced, someone poured koolaid all over it. I have since installed an alarm, which went off last night leading me to discover someone possibly fleeing and a nice fat cigarette burn on the cover I now have on it. Luckily it didn't burn through. My roommates have experienced similar incidents all the way to two hit and runs and one totalled vehicle from a drunk driver in our parking lot.

JMU keeps accepting ghetto-ass shady people in increasing numbers. I mean, where do these people come from? Granted, a majority of the crime committed here occurs because of local gang activity. Two nights ago someone was shot in the head in Hunter's Ridge literally across from our apartment and is listed in critical condition in a coma at UVA; suspected gang activity. But at the same time, we are getting a "timely warning" email every week it seems of a case of rape, assault & battery, home invasion and robbery involving probable JMU student perpetrators, and those are only the ones that get reported. I read of a JMU student recently who liked to rob convenience stores and finally got caught...wtf?

JMU and its student body has lost virtually all of its charm. Any given day you will encounter classless, tasteless lowlifes and I wonder how in the hell they got in and what they are doing here. They could be degenerates at home and save their parents lots of money. Whereas once you would encounter good-hearted people having a good time on the weekends, now I'll often see the same kind of shady people matching the descriptions in the DNR of wanted criminals.

Bottom line, there are still good people here, and some who remember the glory days, but to the OGs, you wouldn't miss this, and to any prospective students, watch yourself. JMU no longer represents the laid back and friendly times your older siblings and friends told you about. Next year I am moving to a new community on the edge of town with individual garages and a few dozen security cameras, and I hope that in doing so my GTFO meter won't be as pegged in the red as it is now. Only time will tell.

It's a global network of travelers... hosts and surfers... that open their houses up for other travelers to stay for free. It's the most social, social-network that exists today. Nearly 1 million people worldwide are on it. If you're ok staying on a couch, floor, or futon, you can stay pretty much anywhere for free. There's no monetary exchange. No exchange of favors. Just good will. You can also use it to just meet locals when you're traveling. I'll explain more as we go on...

How it works: You sign up and list your couch if you have one available. Surfers will send you "couch requests" if they want to stay with you. You can inspect their profile and decide whether or not you want to let them stay. If you don't, say no. If you do, say yes, and tell them how to get to your place... or meet up for coffee first and decide if it's comfortable.

If you don't want to surf, and maybe just want to meet people while traveling, or to meet people that are traveling... set your status to "Coffee or a drink". That way people will know that they can send you a message and maybe meet up for a chat, a drink, or maybe a tour. For example, if Gerald listed himself as up for that in DC... I might look for a local to show me around DC or just to meet up and grab a beer with. I'd send him a message and off we go.

Why it's safe: First off... this isn't craigslist or myspace for travelers. They have a dispute resolution team for any issues. Beyond that, there are three systems of verification.
1 - References. Basically a facebook wall where you only write one thing. You rate a positive, neutral, or negative experience you've had with a person and it shows up in their profile. (easy to game the system you may be thinking)
2 - Verification - This is physical address verification. They know where you live by mailing something to you. You can still be a creep.
3 - Vouching - This is *brilliant*. In order to vouch for someone, you must have 3 vouches yourself. What that means is, you can't create 10 accounts, make a ring of friends, and go around being a legit person. To be vouched for, you have to interact with the CS community and prove to someone that has 3+ vouches already that you are a good, trustworthy person. It started with the founders giving each other 3 vouches and spiderwebbing around the world as they met more and more people. Now, vouches are all over the world.

You can work within your comfort zone entirely with the site. If it's your first time, you can only choose to have experiences with people that have been vouched for, have references, and are verified.

The Community: In most cities, there's a CS group (forum) and often times, meetups. If you want to meet some new people that live around you, it's great. On the other side of things, if you're traveling (ahem... ginger... you can easily meet locals that are eager to interact with travelers)

My Experience: In the past few months, I've hosted at least 20+ groups of people. Single guys, girls, groups of guys (three german dudes that were HILARIOUS), groups of girls, a group of mormons from SLC (that were seriously amazing people)... I've had more amazing experiences that I can share. We've made food together, partied together, gone camping, explored the city, etc. It's been the best website I've ever used. I've had not one bad experience and have racked up plenty of vouches and great references. I've met local SFers, and travelers from all over the world. I've made some great friends that I plan to visit when I go traveling.

Last Notes: As you can probably tell, I love this site. Keep in mind... this is NOT a dating site. Also, being a guy, you need to work extra hard to keep the creep factor down. Don't think you'll fall in love with someone from this site. You may, but that's not the intention. The intention is cross cultural understanding and to be beneficial to travelers.

I know the idea of someone random staying on your couch is weird to a lot of people. It's not for everyone. What you'll learn real quick though is that it turns the world into a much smaller place than you'd ever imagine. After 2 months of being active... I got 3 surfers in a row who shared mutual friends.

So, I may do some contracting while I'm there. In that case, I'll take my laptop. Other than that, I was thinking of picking up an ipod touch to write quick emails while I'm traveling, and to check the web in internet cafes. Worth $200 for a NIB craigslister? Yay/nay?

So Goodspeed and I just had a nice little chat about this weekend's track days at Summit Point. I know there's some interest from current MMers and others around H-Burg, so here's the plan for tomorrow...

We'll meet up at the Rockingham lot (as always!) at 10:45 AM to leave by 11. Summit Point is in West Virginia and roughly 1.5 hours away based on the route that we're taking. Route 11 runs parallel to 81 and should be fairly scenic, especially compared to 81.

The afternoon driving sessions are HPDE 3 and 4, aka the people who can give ride-alongs to the people like us. Goodspeed is going to bring some helmets for people to use, but if you have one to bring, please do.
