Feeling a little bored and I just passed 50k miles of ownership, so I figured I would write a little something on the DD. For all of you who might not know, I bought my Pontiac as a replacement for my Rabbit, which was the largest POS I have ever owned. The car was originally a California rental, pre-wrecked with some questionable body work to the right rear quarter panel, front bumper and hood. The price was right though.
Maintenance / repairs since 34k miles:
35k - Had a steering column U-Joint replaced under warranty due to a slight clunk when turning the wheel directly off center.
45k - Replaced transmission fluid / filter and front brake pads w/ CMax units
65k - New Yokohama tires all round, stockers still had some tread left but all wet traction was gone.
75k - Hawk HPS pads and rotors all the way around, new plugs and wires, changed supercharger oil
80k - Replaced accessory drive belts and flushed the coolant
Upgrades:
Silverstar headlight bulbs
Hacked up the stock airbox to remove a lot of restriction.
180-degree thermostat - the stock cooling system is barely adequate for the car. It never overheats but the trans will get to 240 if you are running hard up a mountain.
So far the car has been great, dead reliable and flies completely under the radar. It handles like shit but soaks up the miles and is great in traffic. Stereo is awesome and the built in XM kicks ass. Remote start and seat heaters are great in the winter - I don't want to own another car without it.

Hey kids.
Cruise tomorrow, likely 33W because I want to test out my suspendorz in tight turns. Rockingham lot, 1 PM, go!
BBQ at Cabell's place, come by about 4:30. Dad sent smoked brisket and baked beans, so we'll have that plus other grilled fixins. Bring your whip to show off with lots of neon and tire shine.

1993 Miata, c-package car (w/ intact VLSD). Seats, some of the dash, and soft top are gone. Engine block is still in car, but the head and associated parts are in a box currently. Bought as a project, but I have 2 other Miata's that are in need of motor rebuilds, so it has to go. Body is straight, w/ a little rust in the passenger lower quarter panel. I believe the car has the larger 1.8L brakes (will need a LF caliper), and the LR lower control arm will have to be replaced. Pictures in link below:

Black hardtop and black wheels not included.
$600

I could attempt to explain this purchase, but it's just easier to say I'm young, dumb and made enough money this summer to justify a cheap old car as a beater/toy. I picked this car up last night from Charlottesville and after a test drive/ride that could re-define "hoonery" in the dictionary, decided it was mechanically sound (enough) to be worth my while.
It's a 1987 BMW E30. Started life as a 325e, and is now technically a "327e" because it has a replacement M20 Eta motor from an E28 5-series Eta car. There's new brakes, a new clutch, a mad-tyte EDM short shifter yo, stainless steel brake lines, new starter, above-average sound system, and somewhere around 150k miles - the odometer stopped rolling at 95,200.
Plans are to get the idle sorted out - it starts okay and then idle fluctuates between 1k and like 400 rpm. The idle air control is brand new, so I think it's the air flow meter. The P.O. took it to a shop and they told him what it was, and he pointed out the part to me. I don't know the M20 that well so I'm not 100% on what I'm looking at.
Also going to re-paint it and generally clean things up... then drive the snot out of it for the school year.

This is apparently what's causing my idle issue. It's between the airbox and the tube that goes to the motor. Think it's the AFM.

Well this past Thursday I rear ended one of my co workers coming home from work. Just my luck when I was going to go home vacuum and wash it so I could take pics and post for sale.. His bumper is a little scuffed up but I got the pleasure of having a banged up front bumper, bent hood latch, cracked grill (slightly), and cracked radiator support.. I can't really afford brand new parts( even aftermarket non OEM) so I'm trying to scrounge some junkyards for parts. I'm probably going to do it all myself then have somebody paint it that way I can finally sell this thing.. I wondering if anyone has any heads up for places that may have a high concentration of VW parts in NOVA and area's surrounding Harrisonburg.

So this story was on CNN today about a high school kid and a mentor/teacher that used an old Indy car to build a ~450mpg car.
This thing looks incredibly impractical and uncomfortable, but also very badass. The car appears to still have at least some of the Indy car safety equipment like the crash pod, but any other car would decimate it in a bumper to bumper accident. The student mentions that it's pretty quick...and it probably is very quick if it has any kind of power at all, considering it probably wieghs a bit more than a motorcycle.
This got me thinking...would I be willing to sacrifice comfort and safety for a car that would barely need to be fueled? I already have to an extent: my car has no air conditioning or power steering, has a fairly stiff suspension and no sound deadening. I don't think I would go to this extreme, but i would definitely be winning to give up a ton of performance and comfort for an extremely efficient car.
I'd also be interested in how they figured the "equivalent to 300mpg" figure in the first test and 450 figure. Can anyone shed some light on this?
I googled another competition and got this:

A quote from the article:
"For the second year in a row, the student team from Laval University in Quebec, Canada, took home the grand prize. It tallied 2,487 miles per gallon"
