  So you want to do a [Insert-Event-Here] -- A How-To!
Posted by: CaptainHenreh - 02-07-2012, 11:55 AM - Forum: Events - Replies (10)

This post is a work in progress, but it's getting close. Feel free to PM me with errors, corrections, additions, comments, critiques and compliments. I loooooooooove compliments.

So you'd like to get involved, eh? Learn how to hone your driving skills, making your mind a razor sharp instrument? Awesome. But you're not quite sure how to get started. You're not quite sure what you need, what you need to do, and in fact, you don't even know the right questions to ask! Well, you're in the right place.

You can start by Reading MM's Frequently Asked Questions. Lots of good information there. When you're done, come back. I'll wait. Smile

Here's a TOC for this thread:

And here's some General Things you should Keep in Mind:

Uncle Rex, my car is too slow to Autocross/HDPE/Whatever. I'll do it when I get my new car / engineswap / supercharger / turbo kit / nawzzzz...

Bollocks! That's not true and deep down inside, you know it. An average Honda Civic is faster than a 66 Mustang from the factory floor. Your car is PLENTY fast, YOU are the weakest link in the speed chain. I autocrossed my 1991 Geo Metro when I was in college. You want to talk about slow? Boy I've had dogs outrun that car. But I squeezed every miniature pony out of those three cylinders, and made my tires cry for mercy until you could make a thumbprint in them...all on my very first autocross. So don't talk to be about slow, young'n. Any idiot can do a buck forty down the front straight of VIR in a ZR1 Vette or Carrera GT. Takes actual talent to drive something slower.

What mods should I get before I do X?
Honestly, you should do X before making any modifications, with very few exceptions. Learn how to drive the car, and the car will tell you what it needs and more importantly, what it doesn't. If you must make modifications before doing one of these things, start with a nice, aggressive street brake pad (but not necessarily a race pad) and good quality tires. An extra set of wheels (so you can have dedicated track wheels) and tires wouldn't be bad either, but as a college student, space is at a premium.

Uncle Rex, this is a lot of information! Did you come up with it all?
While this may look like all Uncle Rexy's doing, this is actually a collaboration among a large number of people who have Been There, Done That. If you have anything you'd like to add, or anything that's not clear, please PM Me and I'll add, subtract, clarify, etc. Smile

Unca Rex, this is a lot to digest, and now I'm more intimidated than I was before I came in this thread. Thanks a lot!
Hey. Tiger. Champ. Buster. Buddy. Turn that frown upside down. You can do this! Chances are anything you want to do in this thread, you can do as long as you've got a safe automobile that's actually capable of it. That's the key here. All you need to get involved in this stuff is a car that's not a total pile of shit and a mind that's the same.

Change Log:
07FEB2012 -- Created Initial topic. Added Autocross and HPDE. Requested topic be Sticky'd.
16FEB2012 -- Added "advanced autocross" to Auto-X section. Added Draft NASA Worker and Draft Wheelin' guide.

Monday 2/13 Beers and food at Daves
Posted by: Jewels - 02-06-2012, 05:47 PM - Forum: Events - Replies (32)

Ok, so since i brought it up in another thread I thought I'd post a proper event. Beers and food next Monday night at 6 pm at Daves Taverna. Please, Please, Please come, but if you don't you'll miss hanging with Rex and Julie and that's your problem. But seriously, it'll be nice to have a face to face with people we've not met yet, and also you guys we haven't seen all semester. This isn't an intervention or anything, its simply a chance to spend time getting to know your brothers and sisters in speed. This club will only be fun if we make it fun, so lets get a chance to become friends. ALSO. BEER. I'll personally buy the first round of pitchers. For you all underage you should still come, but you get ROOT BEER. or some shit like that.

  2012 VW Beetle Turbo
Posted by: Ken - 02-05-2012, 05:05 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (9)

So my mom traded in her 09 TL yesterday for one of the new Beetles. Admittedly i was against it, and insisted that if she was going to get one it had to be the Turbo edition. Went to look at it a couple weeks ago and the test drive went well, just didn't seem to hold as well as a car sharing structure with the GTI should.

After we got it though I thought a little differently, fun car that moves pretty quick and you can throw around a bit in the curves. For whatever reason it feels faster than the GTI off the line, i compared back and forth with my brother's. The interior is very well done and the re-design is definitely growing on me. My mom was dead set on getting something a little more individual after having the TL, which for whatever reason everyone and there mother around here had. So the one we got was the limited edition run "Turbo Launch Edition" which i believe only comes in black and white.

I have her convinced to autocross and possibly change a couple things on it, so hopefully updates to come soon.

  FS: A set of 17x9 TRM MT1-R Gray +40s with Yoko S-Drives
Posted by: SlimKlim - 02-03-2012, 09:29 AM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (10)

I have a set of TRMotorsports (Enkei's rebranded by TireRack) MT1-Rs in 17x9 +40 fitment, light gray color. They are currently wrapped in about half-used 245/40/17 Yokohama Sdrives. These are probably some of the best track/autocross wheels you can buy for the money. They clock in at 16.3lbs. I drove on them for almost two years and at least 20-25k miles. They are in excellent condition, with nothing that I would consider more than normal wear and tear. They have some socket marks from being taken on and off so many times, and one 2 inch long "curb rash" from where I tickled a curb. That's about it.

I loved these things. I just switched to VMR CSL reps, and while they are gorgeous, and the thinner tire is better for street use, the difference in weight is VERY noticeable. Now when I run out first gear I get a chirp and squat instead of just redline-slappin tire-spinnin'.

This past weekend I did an incredibly fast paced suspension swap, wheel swap and wheel bearing swap, so I only had time to clean two of the wheels, and take pictures of one of them. I can assure you they are all in similar condition, and I'll try to get more pictures this weekend.

I'm asking $1000 for MMers, which works out to a slight discount on the wheels and a free set of tires compared to new.

  Space heater
Posted by: JPolen01 - 02-01-2012, 04:51 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (3)

Anyone in Harrisonburg have a space heater that I could borrow this weekend? The weather is supposed to be around 50 so I figured if I had a space heater I could bring the temperature up to painting temp and spray bomb my lip. Anyone have one I can borrow? This is pending I have an enclosed space to paint. Thanks

I saw a Chrysler TC today. It was running. Some dude who had to be a complete baller in 1989 was driving it.

  Brake pads and rotors
Posted by: NTIman - 01-31-2012, 05:34 PM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (17)

I'm going to have to change the brake pads on my car soon. I've been looking at Hawk ceramic and Hark HPS pads, but I'm not sure which would be better. These are going on daily driver, but see spirited driving and may see an autocross or 2 before the year is out. Opinions? Suggestions?

Same with rotors. I want to replace those as well. Stock rotors? Cheapest aftermarket rotors?
