  Its that time of the year again... State Inspection
Posted by: FlaakCM - 05-31-2013, 04:44 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (27)

Hey guys/gals,

It is around that time of the year again for me and I need to get the truck safety inspected. Normally, I take it to the Cheveron at the fairfax circle, but when I drove there yesterday for an inspection, I found out that they have permanently closed doors.

Does anyone know of a shop that generally passes anything that comes through the doors?

note: the only thing that wouldnt pass on the truck is the fact that it has 20% tint on the front side windows.

Thanks!

In case anyone is local. Im in Lambertville, NJ. I dont use them anymore so I figure I might as well sell them before they lose too much value. And yes, both of them are really almost brand new.

  Reminder: Check your Inner and Outer Brake Pads!
Posted by: D_Eclipse9916 - 05-29-2013, 09:18 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (11)

As car guys, we all tend to check our cars brake pads, but most of us if we aren't taking off the wheel, just look at the outer pad. In the case of my 2500HD, weighing 7500lbs, and excessively heavy wheel/tire package, I tend not to pull the wheels that often. :lol:

I had looked at the outer pads, as the pad started making some noise in the right rear corner of the truck. Well there was a decent amount of pad left, but I could see it maybe starting to hit the wear strips. Okay, I will remind myself when I get to work Tuesday to order some pads and rotors. (this was friday). I let my mom borrow the truck part of the weekend, letting her know I needed to replace the brakes, but it shouldnt be a problem.

Fast forward to Monday, my mom had dropped off the truck, and I noticed a small vibration going to a friends about 3 miles away. Well, okay, ignored (first mistake).

I drive the truck tuesday to work (9 miles all backroads). BAD vibration and noise, well I didnt want to be late to work (2nd mistake). I check underneath once I get to work and Confusedhock: The rotor has disintegrated into half its original size. I order up parts and decide to limp it home (final and STUPID mistake). On the way home, the pistons extend and start shooting fluid out. I lost brakes. Using the turbo brake in tow/haul mode, I get it home.

STUPID STUPID STUPID. Always check your brakes, inside and out. Don't ignore the symptoms just to not be late at work. The right rear caliper had seized, cause the inner pad to slide on the rotor, disintegrating the pad, and the rotor. Even when the brakes had completely failed, the outside pad and rotor looked fine and plenty of pad.

$250 for 4 new rotors, f/r pads, and a right rear caliper and we are good to go now. (all luckily in stock at the local autozone)

  RC flying
Posted by: HAULN-SS - 05-25-2013, 10:07 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (19)

I was thinking we already had a thread on RC planes or something, but I couldnt find it.

I picked up a plane today that I am anxious to learn on. It's a Parkzone Visionaire. I ended up going with the bind and fly because I got a Spectrum Dx6i transmitter.

I figured this would give me a couple extra channels to play around with than the typical 4 channels that come with the RTF kits. I can see later on after i trash my first plane or two (ineveitable i am sure) buying more bind kits and i think that some of them can be had cheaper.

This plane isnt exactly the most beginner plane I could have gotten, but it has some features like active stabilization and such that I was interested in and I think will help, as well as some really slow speed maneuverability.

Sooo...anyone else into this?

  FS: 2007 Mazda Miata GT / PRHT, 81k miles

[Image: DSC01470.JPG]

For sale is my wife’s daily driver. It’s a 2007 MX5, Grand Touring with the power folding hard top. It currently has 81K miles. We are having a daughter and all our cars need to be able to carry a car seat (and the Evo doesn’t count because it’s loud and stupid).

We purchased it in 2011 with 54k. It’s been a drama free car. Maintenance between then and now:
* New gas cap @ 81k
* 2 new tires @ 57k
* Rear diff fluid @ 60k
* Transmission fluid @ 60k
* Power steering fluid @ 60k
* Air filter @ 60k
* Spark plugs... 65k?
* Front brake pads @ 76k (stoptech street performance)
* Coolant/thermostat @ 81K

It’s been on Mobil 1 extended performance since we have had it.

I took it to Carmax for their appraisal and in the comments they put “Well maintained MX-5!! Runs and shows well.” I would much rather sell this to an enthusiast though.

The good:
* Of all the non-appliance cars my wife and I have owned (91 MR2, 93 Miata, 08 STi, 03 WRX, 98 M3, 99 M3, 07 MX5, 06 Evo) , this is the most pure fun. It has all the strengths of a Miata - 50/50, magical rotation, a revvy engine - with none of the weaknesses.  If it had a back seat we would be keeping it.
* It’s got the power hard top, so it can feel like a normal coupe when you want it to.
* It’s got heated seats, so you can drive it all year.
* Mileage. I think it’s EPA rated at 25 city 30 highway. I borrowed it for a week when my wife was out of town, and on my 70-75 mph mixed-mostly-highway commute I was in the high 29’s.
* Did I mention it was fun? This is the best combination of daily liveable and Miata I can imagine.

The bad:
* There are some cosmetic blemishes. The right side mirror got scraped on something (probably a valet at my wife’s work, but who checks out the passenger side of their car before getting into it). There are some rock chips that the previous owner touch-up-painted. There are some light scratches on the trunklid. There are a couple small dents. The worst chip is this one:
[Image: DSC01476.JPG]
There isn’t much you would notice from more than about 10 feet away. I took lots of pictures to demonstrate this Smile
* It was in one accident where my wife was pushed into another car. She drove it home with no issues. The idiot who did the rear ending had USAA and the car was repaired at D&V Autobody. D&V has a 5-star rating on Yelp (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/d-and-v-autobody-dulles">http://www.yelp.com/biz/d-and-v-autobody-dulles</a><!-- m -->) and we have always been really happy with their work.
* The passenger side Bose speaker is on its way out. We listen to a lot of NPR so we never bothered to change it.
* It’s throwing a P0126 code. Common problem with the 06-07 MZR engines, the ones before they redesigned the thermostat. We’ll get this fixed before the sale. More info here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=441615">http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=441615</a><!-- m -->

KBB private party value for an 07 MX5 GT with the hard top is $14801 excellent, $14301 very good, and $13,851 good. We are asking $13K even.

If you would like to get the car checked out at a shop of your choosing (well, in the area at least) we can work something out.

We're going out of town from June 7th to the 14 or 15th and looking for someone that could watch our Grace, a 6yr old weimaraner. she's pretty chill and plays well with others. Headed to williamsburg so I could drop her off if someone's on the way, or heck, maybe even crash at my house for the week to let her out if you want. anyway, thought i'd throw it out there as i'm not a big fan of kennels.
