Help Mikey get to one car
Posted by: Mike - 11-01-2013, 02:19 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (247)

I moved. We no longer need two cars since I work from home and/or bike everywhere. We took my car. It is manual. Great car and perfect for our current needs, but she can't drive it. Believe me, we've tried.

Requirements:
- Space. Think: wagon. I do not want a crossover or SUV because I've never met one with any sort of enjoyable driving dynamics.
- Hatch or swinging door.
- An automatic that doesn't suck.
- Less than 15lbs per HP or very close to it.
- Available with lowish miles and possibly with a warranty for ~20k or known to be very reliable.

Nice to have:
- I'd very much like to see >30mpg highway since that's 90% of my driving.
- All wheel drive. We will be visiting large mountains in the winter and I park off road quite a lot for cycling and running shit.

DOES THIS EXIST? Or am I chasing a unicorn?

Shortlist after having done little to no research:
- MK6 4-door GTI (DSG). Add two doors and an "auto" to my current car. Only con is it isn't fantastically futureproof (we want to have two).
- Jetta Sportwagen. Only comes in TDI or the shitty 2.5. I'm not convinced TDI will move my noodle and I know the 2.5 does not.
- A4 Avant. Kind of outside the price range. If we get one, it'll be highish mileage and we know these cars are not easy on the maintenance. I suppose CPO is an option. This is probably my favorite option right now.
- Element. Slow and I think I may fall asleep driving it.
- A bunch of Subarus (Forester, Legacy wagon, WRX wagon). I dunno, there must be a reason everyone here has one, but I've never enjoyed driving them very much.
- Some sort of Volvo wagon. Volvos are huge here, but I haven't liked their wagon offerings in a few years so it'd be something pre-2010. It looks like they're coming around to "not suck" territory again, but I don't want to buy a new car.

  FS: 4 JMU Homecoming Tickets
Posted by: DavidM - 11-01-2013, 08:29 AM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (1)

Some friends and I all share season tickets but for whatever reason we have 4 extra tickets for tomorrow's homecoming game. The game is against Villanova at 2:30. Tickets are in Section 405, row L, $25 a piece. This is a pretty good excuse to come spend a day in the burg, do some tailgating etc.

Could meet today in Arlington/Fairfax, or before the game tomorrow afternoon.

  WTB - LS1/3 drivetrain/ whole car / whatever!
Posted by: BLAIR - 10-31-2013, 09:48 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (7)

Keep an eye out guys! I don't know much about these motors but I do know I want all aluminum! I'm an not apposed to buying a whole car ( totaled or whatever ) as I can use the trans for another project! Not even sure what these go for or what is fair.

All I really need a motor ecu and harness! - I don't want to do much besides bolt on mods. Not interested in super high mileage or motor that needs work.

Keep your eyes and ears open! Thanks guys!

  Calling All Jeep Guys/Gals

I am thinking that the easiest way to transition out of my Camaro and into a Corvette will be by picking up a cheap second vehicle. That's where a 97-01 XJ comes in. I found a 99 with 117k miles and a smaller lift that was super clean for 5k but the guy sold it before I could get my hands on it.

What do I need to know? Are the 4.0s as bullet proof as people make them sound? Should I stay away from ones with a certain level of mileage if I am going to potentially daily it?

Should I get this head unit?
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 10-28-2013, 09:54 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (9)

So, I don't plan on dropping money on an amp or subs any time soon, but my stock head unit is leaving a lot to be desired.

I see that this is on sale and the reviews seem good. I'm not a huge audiophile so I'm looking for stellar sound. Just a tad of improvement.

What do you guys think? I can justify grabbing it since it's on sale, looks like a good value, and I've been working my butt of recently.

  Is this a GT40?
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 10-25-2013, 03:38 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (12)

A friend of mine back home tweeted to me that he had a GT40 behind him on 29 today. I without even thinking, said "No... you didn't." You don't see GT40s on the road. Like an A/C Cobra, it's just too rare to street, especially for where we live. No one has that kind of money. I told him it had to be a GT or a kit car. He sent me this picture.

Now, it does look a whole lot like a GT40, but something seems off. It definitely looks more like a GT40 than a GT and I can't judge the size of it either. It's not a good picture to base it off of.

I'm thinking it's a kit car, What do you guys think?

98 Exploder. Line leaking from Accumulator? Serious?
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 10-24-2013, 09:06 PM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (8)

So, a buddy of mine asked me to come look at his 98 V6 (Not sure if it was the SOHC or not) Explorer like 5 minutes ago in the dark frozen tundra that is Harrisonburg. He said something was leaking but didn't know what it was. I looked under and there was some liquid, it didn't have a smell, so I ruled out the usual. I popped the hood and looked and saw that a line coming from the accumulator, or whatever it's called, was wet. I peeled back the plastic hose thing from it and there was a nice pool of liquid in there.

Now, I assumed it was refrigerant. I know nothing of HVAC, so I just assumed. He has no money and it's winter so I said if that's what it is, it's nothing that'll strand him on the side of the road. He just won't blow cold air. Then I remembered that I'm pretty sure refrigerant evaporates, right? So maybe that's not it... Well, it has also come to my attention that that may very well be compressor oil... I think. Which would be a much more serious issue. I don't want the pulley to seize and make him throw a belt.

What do you guys think? I'll post a picture I googled and circled the line on.

  Turbo-ZX14 Rider Wrecks @ 140+mph, Survives.
Posted by: Goodspeed - 10-24-2013, 01:51 PM - Forum: Motorcycles - Replies (7)

Stupid stupid stupid, but a pretty amazing story nonetheless. This is probably as good a place as any to start:

Cliffs - wrecked @ 140+ outside of Odessa, TX, into a barbed-wire fence and field. Wasn't found until 12 hrs (overnight) after the accident. Speculation is that the speedo locked at the speed at which it separated from the bike during the breakup, meaning he was quite possibly going well above that. He has no memory of the accident or for 5 days afterwards. The bike was making 340whp.

Obviously hard to type in his condition:

Quote:Iwrecked right at the slight curve, and i wasn't found for 12 hours i stayed out there all night, i hap a collapsed lung too, I DID Have some brain damage which caused me to lose my vision, i cant see properly out of both eyes one eye no problem, my left elbow exploded im going in for surgery thursday to see if they can save it , dr didnt seem to positive about it though. i had a bunch of barbwire cuts on my left side where it sawed threw my clothes, my right side is swollen like no other. and my teeth are cracked..

And his latest words on the subject:

Quote:I'm giving up bikes. The fact no one found me all night 12 ,hours, and I had a collapsed lung the entire time trips me out I didn't die.not to mention internal bleeding. How close I came to death. I don't know but it was too close. I have one small child and another due in two months. They need a dad.

If you care to see his exploits, search any combination of "JonVon" and turbo, bike, Hayabusa, etc. I have seen a few of his videos over the years and always thought it was only a matter of time before he killed himself. He's apparently a big figure in the "underground" street racing for $$$ world.
