Alternator belt squeal driving me mad...
Posted by: Goodspeed - 06-15-2009, 03:11 PM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (11)

OK, so here's the deal. A few months ago I found my alt belt was cracking and obviously worn, so I replaced it with a Dayco belt from Advance. All was fine, until a few weeks later it started squealing like all hell...

Usually, it squeals when started, and goes away within 10 seconds. Sometimes its been much longer, however. Once it even squealed when pulling away from stop lights, but then stopped. It hasn't been a constant thing like some cars on the road. But 99% of the time when the car is warmed up, it goes away; If I make a few stops and start/stop the car it doesn't squeal, but if it sits parked for 5 hours it'll start again.

I have the torque spec for the tensioner, but don't have a gauge to measure the belt tension. So, guesstimating that it was too loose I tightened it. However, if I really romp on it at the top of 1st (high rpm's) it'll slip and squeal; I was told this means its too tight. So, this morning I dislocated the alternator, made sure it was nice and high up on the upper carrier bolt. I screwed the lower bolt back in through the tensioner bracket, then started to play a game of start *squeal* tighten a bit more, start *squeal* tighten even more, and so on until I was back at the beginning with a still-squealing belt.

I know this is simple stuff, but damn if it isn't annoying and obnoxious as hell and I just want it gone. Is the belt faulty, or am I just not getting that perfect sweet spot? Do most shops have the belt tension gauge? I don't want to pay a shop to have this adjusted properly/"fixed" without the proper tools only to have it squeal a week later.

/rant.

  2009 Isle of Man TT

Went to the TT this year, I HIGHLY recommend going. I will be going again next year. I will do a write up and pictures, but thought I'd throw out a teaser.

This is my buddy Jimmy, who got invited to race. He qualified, and finished w/o crashing, which is a feat in itself. AMA racer Scott Jensen, DEMOLISHED, and I mean DEMOLISHED both of his bikes, and ended up with a broken arm and about 30 screws in it.

Here's Jimmy - he's from dcsportbikes.net too, really really awesome guy. I am also editing a video that I took riding with him and another racer that raced about 8 TT's but crashed bad 3 years ago, and is still recouping. awesome video of two racers walking you through the course.

  General Info About Website Design
Posted by: Steve85 - 06-12-2009, 10:24 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (8)

We have an idea for a website. It's not e-tail or something that is supposed to be groundbreaking in nature. We want a site that can pull in related news events, provide links to resources and have some ad space. The only more complex idea would be to have a couple language options. That's where we'll start and let it evolve from there.

I have two experiences with this related to a website for my wife's side business. We won development services at a charity auction and the person sucked, she wasn't a professional so we couldn't really hold her feet to the fire. So, Aaron did a different, and much nicer one, but when he handed over the access and suggested the program (I think Adobe something) to allow us to edit we just couldn't get it to work (update pictures, prices and product offerings). The site looks good, and is a huge improvement over what was before but trying to work it sucked.

Can you guys suggest where to start to learn how do the type of site we want to do? An online template or something maybe? I could certainly Google and I'm sure get 1000 different options, so I'm looking for some guidance really. Should I just get Website Design for Dummies?

What is the going rate to have someone do it? We aren't expecting huge sums of money so we would have to see if this is worth it. My experience tells me I need someone I'm paying so I can hold thier feet to the fire.

Just another joke from the Obama Administration. Funny, I didn't know terrorists had rights.

Went to Wellsboro, PA last week for vacation and the Susquehanna Trail Performance Rally put on by Rally America. This was the 5th year my friends went up and my first year. We volunteered and worked the Asaph spectator area and the 12 Mile spectator area(2 stages). Our job was crowd control but the rally official(work with the same one every year) knew we were there to get great spectator spots. The best part is that once the green light car goes by to open up the road the rally official (has an STI) would let the green light car queue ahead then we would ball ass down the freshly opened stage getting all sorts of sideways. The turn in the video was the very first turn we hit on the stage, and sure enough one of the newb ass volunteers put their 2.5rs into the embankment you see block hitting(after watching numerous cars get sucked into the ditch from the off camber/mud). Anywho, Block won, Pastrana took 2nd, 3rd was one of the evos (ACP maybe). Mirra wrecked, some european dudes drove off a cliff(literally, got caught in some trees). Noone got hurt and everyone had a good time, so it was a success!

WTB: Trash gun, Jennings .22 or some crap like that

looking for a subcompact .22, would also consider .32 or .380, but most I see are more than I want to spend. Trying to stay around $100.
