  Insurance Losses by Vehicle model
Posted by: Maengelito - 09-23-2009, 03:17 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (7)

Apparently I have the worst car and tied for 2nd best car rated for insurance losses. I found this article in the WSJ:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204488304574429222766313620.html#mod=WSJ_hpp_sections_lifestyle">http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204488304574429222766313620.html#mod=WSJ_hpp_sections_lifestyle</a><!-- m -->

and then was curious to see what kind of data HLDI had:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/composite_bw.aspx?y=2005-2007">http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/composite_bw.aspx?y=2005-2007</a><!-- m -->

How'd you all stack up?

A couple Ford themed events coming up in October

October 17th - 2nd Annual Terminator Shoot-Out @ MIR in Budds Creek Maryland I know this is JMU homecoming weekend but I thought I'd throw this out there. The baddest '03-'04 Cobras from across the country will be at this race. Last year the record for the quickest Terminator quarter mile pass was set at this event. October 23rd, 24th, and 25th - Ford Fever Classic @ MIR in Budds Creek Maryland Just an awesome weekend of all-Ford racing! Saturday the 24th is the day to come out if you can only make it to one day, lots of drag racing and a huge car show to take in. Link to MIR's page for more info on the Classic - http://www.mirdrag.com/ford/index.htm

Our conversation yesterday at Verona about the rock stars rolling through town got me to thinking...so I decided to do a little diggin' over on the Ford GT Forums and came up with this...

I'm a local that is hopefully on the road to becoming a middle school teacher (IDLS major).
I used to drive a 92 Camaro Z28 and started autocrossing with it back in 04 but tire prices, gas, insurance, and it being a high mileage PITA led me to my current obsession: my 97 Miata.
Mods: K&N air filter (CAI made my car run too lean?), Xcellerator muffler (old one fell off, borla will replace this one when it falls), $40 infamous "Ebay" coilovers, Koni shocks rear-Kyb craptastics front, Flyin Miata 1" front Swaybar, Fatcat Motorsports NB shock mounts-front, Hard Dog Hard Core Double Diagonal Rollbar, 15x7 Black Rota RB's 30mm offset with Dunlop Star Spec tires.
I've been autocrossing it since the first week I owned it and it's been an evolutionary process. I've been chasing Scott Krzastek in STS (formerly STS2), done a few circuitcrosses, and just overall have fun with this car.
Personal notes:
I'm old (25)
Married-If you find a pretty girl that lets you play with cars, marry her ass before she sobers up and realizes what she's in for!

You'll probably see my car out in No mans land in C4 or C6 on MWF 9:30am-1pm. I'm also probably the only one on campus who wears a VIR hat every day so I'm easy to spot.

So this car began as my daily driver. I started drifting it on the streets in early '08 when I bought it. Thought I was having fun, but I really started enjoying it when I started to drift the track at Summit Point, and Old Dominion Speedway. I joined a group called Slideways (http://www.slidewaysonline.com) which are now like my family, and the perspective of the car completely changed!
The car currently sits on Stance GR+ Coilovers, Sportmax wheels (16x8- 0 offset), and is awaiting a transplant. I threw a rod through the block last season at the track with the stock motor, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. Plus, that stock power was getting real old.

The plan: I've been working all summer and since school started to try and get enough money to finish this bad boy off. The issue has been money (of course right) with getting the motor all together, so I just gotta wait til I have money to finish up! Very close though!! I bought the infamous SR20DET from a buddy of mine who was having blowby with it. The motor was running when I bought it, but needed some serious work, so it was going to need a rebuild for sure. Here's some of the work done before the motor blowage, and after...

Pulled the diff and got a buddy to weld it up for drifting. But dang it kinda sucked for daily driving... haha
[Image: GetAttachment-2aspx.jpg]

Car was stripped of course. Sure made for a hot ride since I chiseled away all the sound deadening (that exhaust is right under your feet!). Rattle canned it all down.

Had an incident with the wall at Summit Point...

Got it all fixed up mostly.

All was okay, until.... that rod didn't feel at home anymore
[Image: 4635_205850570323_513820323_6972913_4717609_n.jpg]

I'm very fortunate to have a girlfriend with an awesome dad! haha. His garage is more than enough to get some work done.
[Image: 4635_205844780323_513820323_6972832_979406_n.jpg]

Pulled the KA out, and prepped for the SR.
[Image: 4635_205847210323_513820323_6972843_6503009_n.jpg]

Prepped the bay. Now its silver.

[Image: 5490_233518550323_513820323_7721497_7015036_n.jpg]

I got to work on the re-build of the new motor.
And so the parts started to pile up as it came apart...

[Image: 4965_211020715323_513820323_7098508_1186833_n.jpg]

I hand lapped all of the intake and exhaust valves.
[Image: 6370_223558475323_513820323_7445841_7100305_n.jpg]

So here was the problem with the motor... ring lands were all broken apart on 2 of the pistons! That'll cause that blowby!
[Image: 6130_253378225323_513820323_8189408_7036203_n.jpg]

After tearing it all apart, I had a machine shop handle the honing of the block, they decked the head, planed the block, hot tanked it all for cleaning, checked my valve guides, gave it a bench leakdown test (thank god the valves seal well! haha. I was worried about my home lapping job on the valves).
I recently ordered 4 new pistons, turbo lines, walbro 255 fuel pump, got all my gauges in, new gasket set including the turbo too, arp head studs and rod bolts, a cosworth metal head gasket, piston rings, rod bearings, rocker arm stoppers, and other miscellaneous accessories. Still have yet to purchase a FMIC, electric fans, wire to relocate the battery, and intake stuff...
It should all be getting put back together in about a month, and then I'll still need the parts listed above. But once I get those, I should be all set to start her up!

And the car as it sits now...

I have a couple short clips of the car trying to get sideways with the stock power... Can't wait til this motor is complete to get back on track with more power!

  F/S - HP J5780 all-in-one printer

Can I get $25 for it? I know printers are cheap these days, even the all-in-ones. The cheapest I could find in in a quick search was $75 used on Amazon. Pick it up at the BBQ or I can bring it to the burg. Good little printer, I have an older HP that I am using right now and I don't need all the fancy. Has a LITTLE bit of ink left in it. Figure $23 for reman ink.

I was a "sort of" member of MM from roughly 2004 to 2007. I always felt like my busy class/studying schedule got in the way of attending regular MM meetings and other events, so many of you probably didn't know me. At the very least, I always tried to attend the spring car show. I definitely regret not participating in more MM events while I was at JMU.....in keeping up with the MM forum, it looks like you guys had some good times.

On to the cars:
first dub was a MKIII GTI VR6. had it from sophomore to first part of senior year.

then did a straight trade for a Corrado, which most of you knew me by that car
(at dryft motorsports back in the day)

when I graduated in 07 and got a job that required a 100 mile commute, I had to get a daily driver:
so to save the poor corrado, I bought a 2008 MKV Rabbit
[Image: CIMG3392.jpg]

awesome reliable, practical car....but damn it was boring to drive. so I sold it (had it less than a year  and had 18K miles on it)
then I bought a MKIV R32!! Went from practical, comfortable, reliable car to the total opposite, but it is the most fun and amazing car EVER. VR6 engine sound + AWD = Big Grin

see you guys at the MM car shows
