Hello there MM'ers

The officers and I are going to begin hammering out details and pull the trigger on meeting dates etc. over the xmas break so that next semester is even better than this past fall!

I would love to organize a MM Ski/ Snowboard trip to Massanutten or possibly Wintergreen. I generally go at least 1 to 2 times a week to board and think this would be a great social event!

During our current student meetings, what exactly is being shown?

In the days when we were there, there was the usual "cool videos" and upcoming events and the such. But we also had special presentations that were very interesting.

I know we had Dr. Borg come in, and Greg Schaeffer from Mid-Atlantic Motorwerkes. We also had students post up presentations of a certain platform (didnt even need to be their car but most of the time it worked out that way). During the last year I was there, I did a presentation to explain in technical detail how turbos worked; and answered questions. I know we were going to go further and continue these presentations.

Are they happening? I feel explaining how things work, would make students more ambitious to try things on their own.

BTW- What happened to the bi-weekly meetings? Did they get foregone because of air strip antics?


Suggestion board for certain things to explain? Lets get some resident experts, I know more about turbos, tuning and motors, but I also have some friends in the industry that I could drag down.

Cylinder heads explained (is porting better? What are cathedral ceilings? whats DOHC actually mean? VTEC? cross-flow heads?)
Turbos explained (is bigger better? Whats A/R? Whats variable Vane? Why do I boost spike? Whats a BOV or wastegate?)
Tuning explained (what is knock or the actual proper term for it predetonation, what is the effect of timing vs boost for power?)
Shocks (what they actually do, what you should look for, whats this "crosstalk, hysterisis, high/low speed rebound/compression")
Cylinder block (advantages of aluminum vs iron, what is knife edging? what do they mean by oversquare? what is a domed piston?)
Diesel vs. Gas Engines
Aerodynamics (are they dive planes or canards? does a wing push or suck? what is true downforce vs reduction in lift?)
Painting, the proper way
Explaing wheels/tires (offset/backspacing, advantages of tread block design, slip angle)
Brakes (bigger is better? braking bias? advantages/disadvantages of slotted/drilled? Whats this cyro talk?)


These are just some suggestions, but the one time I explained turbos, it seemed to garner a lot of interest.

Hi guys, hoping one of you could lend a hand. I re-tuned my car to a stage one Cobb tune last week after weening it back onto premium gas. However, past two days when I go WOT the car kind of thumped and once even threw a CEL. I plugged in the Cobb and the Code I got was for wastegate malfunction. From what gather it is due to over boosting. Not sure where to go from here, if someone could possibly take a look at some of the datalogs i pulled and shed some light i would greatly appreciate it (could send them to you). From what i see the knocksum is fine right up until it overboosts, at which point it goes to 6 and 9. Not really sure if this could be from the cold, haven't had these issues until now.

Just as a precaution i set it back to stock and i will mind the boost pressure to see if it still shoots up high, as that would mind it could be a leak? I think?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance guys!

Umm, yeah. Finally moving on up, and away from ikea furniture. Headboard, sides, and end piece + slats and other crap. This is a 'platform' style bed, so you don't need a boxspring. There are some light scratches on the side pieces from my asshole dog, other than that it should be good to go.

I think on CL people are asking for $125-150 range, if someone from here wants it $50.. (and if your bringing a pickup truck, you dump the mattress)


Still deciding to put up other items soon - but if anyone wants a head start...

Posting for a coworker of mine. He's new to the area and between he and his wife, they have one car right now. It's big enough to tote the kids around, but he needs something to use 99% for commuting.

Max budget is $3500, must not need a ton of work to be on the road for 6-12 months. That Probe GT that's posted in Chad's thread would be perfect. He's fine with manual or automatic, no need for extra seats or safety for kidlings as it's just him.

Anyone selling anything of that nature? Can be truck, car, airplane, whatever will get him from Rockville to Dulles.

Long shot, but figured I would throw these up here. I have a set of 4 Falken 912s with less than 8,xxx miles on them. They are 205/45/17. They are still mounted to my wheels. Been stored in my basement (climate controlled), so no dry rotting, cracking, or flat spots. I'd like to get $300. I can send pictures if necessary. They look like tires with great amounts of tread left.

No confusion. Official Turducken Party is February 2nd, 2013. It will be held at 1296 Wedgewood Manor Way, Reston VA 20194. Time to be determined, but I certainly will not turn you away if you come early (especially if you are bringing alchohol).

RJ is planning on bringing the main course (turducken), please feel free to bring snacks/food/alchohol. There is tons of parking around my neighborhood.

Feel free to bring friends/family, and lets make sure we get plenty of MMers up here! It is also the weekend of the DC auto show, so Saturday morning we will be heading over there as a group. As soon as we return from the DC auto show, I expect the shenanigans will start. Tons of places to crash at my place. I have a guest bedroom, ill check if my roommate will be in town for an additional guest bedroom. I also have 1-fold out couches, 5 sofas that can be crashed on. Floor space is also plentiful, so feel free to bring an airmattress/crash on the floor. Please let me know who expects to crash at my house.

One parking spot in my garage is going to be left open for motorcycles. Since it will most likely be cold out/bad weather, I am leaving you the option open. Please refrain from burnouts/revving them in my neighborhood. There are plenty of sidestreets outside my nieghborhood where you can piss off other people. I reserve the right to kick you out.

Now for the fun part, I've got plenty of counter space in the kitchen for food/drinks. A keg will be in attendance, and I want to issue a beer-pong challenge for Alumni vs. Current students!

I'm making some effort to move my electronics & software into this decade, so I'm interested to see what people out there are using. I've been using Microsoft Money for 10+ years (MSMoney 2004 on XP right now - super stable, never have any problems), but they killed MSM in 2009 and completely stopped supporting it in 2011. Apparently, it's quite hard to get MSM installed on the newer OSs, and since I'm looking to switch to a Win8 laptop soon, I'm trying to figure out my options:
-keep the old desktop just for using MSM2004; man, talk about wasting energy and space...
-get an old XP laptop, install MSM2004; spend a little money, but retain mobility, stability, familiarity, and all of my history
-put some time in and make an XL spreadsheet that does my essentials; can do most of what I do, cheap but time consuming, can consume all of my historical data, most labor intensive for the future (yeah, I could also build my own database and a rudimentary program to operate it, but we're talking even more time and effort there - maybe a future project...)
-adopt something new; change is bad?

Personally, I really like Money for what I need, which are relatively basic yet pretty specific. It's super useful to have years of records available for reference at my fingertips, and I use it remarkably often in my day-to-day life. I tried to define my use cases, so if you know of a program that can do this (or have suggestions on top of my what I listed above), please share your experience

1) I don't care about the program hooking into my actual bank accounts, that's not a seling point for me.
2) It is extremely important that I be able to make custom categories to classify purchases, and be able to assign purchases to those categories. Furthermore, being able to break individual receipts down into multiple categories is also pretty critical (Ex: go to Walmart, but a jug of motor oil and your groceries; need to be able to split those)
3) Ability to enter receipts/transactions before they hit accounts. This is twofold - I want to be able to enter receipts when I get home to get them out of my wallet instead of waiting for it to hit the bank, but more importantly I like to enter fake transactions to predict the state of my accounts, then delete them once I have a plan (yeah, I can do it in XL, but that's annoying sometimes...)
4) Maintain numerous account types: savings, checking, loans, physical assets, escrow, 401k, IRA
5) Budgeting, including warnings when approaching/going over budget
6) Automated updates of stock information is a pretty good feature. Likewise, showing a portfolio summary broken out by account giving me the details of each holding is pretty big (close price, yield, intraday hi/lo, 52 wk hi/lo, my market value, etc.)
7) Searching for transactions by keyword, or viewing all transactions within a category
8) Charting/reporting: monthly income & expenses, spending by category over time, cash flow over varieties of accounts and date ranges
9) I write pretty specific notes on a lot of my transactions, this helps me clarify what the purchase was.
