What are kids usin' these days for class laptops?
I would get something like this - the 520M graphics card is going to put it leaps and bounds ahead of Intel's HD chipset so far as graphics processing power. It still won't play most modern games, but its a definite step up. My only beef is that the HD is 5400rpm.

EDIT - better one found:

Has anyone who bought the ASUS Transformer (Lee and Chris?) also bought the keyboard dock? I'm mulling it over but haven't taken the plunge yet.

No keyboard yet. I don't think Lee has either.

My guess is I won't last long without it... although I'd like to hold out for a price drop.

I did not. I thought about it too, but I still have my other laptop that i will probably end up keeping. It kind of defeats the purpose of why I bought it.

I did buy a 32gb SD HC card for it from China on Ebay and not surprisingly it would not format. Good seller though, refunded the money with no questions asked.

I only say you are not going to find a powerful laptop because you want to edit video with it. At the very least, you should have a powerful dual or quad core processor, 7200rpm HD, a decent video card and an external monitor to edit video.

You need to prioritize the following groups:

1. Weight / Portability
2. Battery Life
3. Speed

1. Video Editing
2. Playing games
3. Surfing the internet / web browsing / document editing

There are some decently powerful 4-core laptops for cheap ($700 on Newegg), but they don't have the best battery life (about 2 hours max.) You can buy a super fast laptop with a large battery that will last ~4hours, but it will be 7-8lbs and cost $1000+. If I were you, I would buy a slower laptop with good battery life for what Casey needs it for and build a desktop for your video editing.

well lets be honest, the most video editing im going to to is cutting up the video I get from my go pro, and throwing a title slide on it. Probably should have specified that. Do i still need the Octo Core 1billion GB Ram laptop?

It only takes SDHC with the keyboard, no? Without, it uses microSD.

that's kinda of what i assumed "i want to edit videos" is not "video editing." a laptop will suffice.

I dunno! It read it for a minute then it stopped and wouldn't work anymore.

Went with the Toshiba from Best Buy. Man I missed a larger screen! I had gotten so used to using the 10in netbook as an everyday computer, now time to clean all the crap off the netbook.

Did you price compare? I would be surprised if Best Buy was competitive with online retailers.

spent a good amount of time with an ipad 2 this weekend.

impressions. slippery and uncomfortable to hold. i guess a case is required.
same footprint as my 11" laptop, about half the thickness.

internet browsing was surprisingly slow and sluggish considering this is the faster dual core chip.
browser also locked up twice in 10 minutes

lack of multitasking is maddening. feels like a media player toy, not a real computer

for slightly more thickness an ultraportable laptop is a million times better. consider me unconverted, Im still in the "makes no damn sense" camp.
So I dont plan on picking up a tablet, even the touchpad

FWIW, I have none of these issues with the Android Transformer. You can turn it into a laptop with the optional keyboard too, if you really wanted.

me too :dunno: Any of the "pads" are pretty dumb to me. For a few hundred more, an Apple fanboi like myself would much rather have the 11" MacBook Air. Heck, I'd rather have an EEE PC or one of the mini Dells rather than ANY "pad". Maybe for an old person or otherwise computer illiterate, they're perfect.
