What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Apoc - 02-16-2011

Hopefully something small, light, relatively cheap and doesn't suck (read: atom). Eee? MacBook Air? Abacus?

Behemoth laptop and desktop are already on hand, so no need for a do-it-all machine.

13" Macbook Pro was my choice for a lightweight rig. I use it as my desktop machine too and it performs fairly well even for gaming.
Macbook Air is slow.
Eee is a POS.

iPad?

+1 during college. And it serves as a beater rig for the track.

Wait till right before college. MAc does $150 discount on the macbook for students plus a lot of freebies.

I got $150 discount, free ipod touch, and a free printer (a nice one too I was like ?). A month later they had the new ipod touch and same deal. ($#%$!). But yeah wait till they have those good deals.

a coworker still in school uses an atom netbook.

I have a ULV ultraportable that is netbooked sized but much much faster that I use for travel. Would be perfect for class. Was about $350 on sale.

Laptops are old fashioned. If you have a powerful laptop and a good desktop get a tablet. The Motorola Xoom is out and looks like its gonna give the ipad a run for it's money.

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - Evan - 02-16-2011

I cant imagine a worse note taking device than a tablet.

didnt you already graduate Chris?

Yeah, I'm done. The wife just started grad school and lugs her 17" Inspiron to class. I know she hates it, so I was thinking about surprising her with something (relatively cheap) after I get my bonus.

I agree with Evan on the note taking. I think touch is fine for minor things but full on class notes is another level. I know they have the keyboard case/dock thing, but then you might as well just get a laptop/netbook for cheap. She's also expressed that she really likes hardware keyboards, both for phones and computers, so touch is pretty much out.

The Xoom is WAY overpriced. If anything, I think the Playbook will be better value for money.

good point. notes for class > notes in a meeting.

i'll stick with my 13" macbook pro recommendation. sure, you'll get much better "numbers" out of a pc, but she doesn't care about MHz or FPS.

Is that the one you had in the truck on the way home from Snowshoe? If so, its worlds better than my Dell with the atom processor. For basic web browsing and movie watching its great. Small, lightweight and the 5+ hour battery life is fantastic but any more than that it just falls short.

I dont know how 'cheap' you're looking to go but my old Dell 700m was much, much better than the netbook Dell I have now - quick search on ebay shows this - http://cgi.ebay.com/DELL-INSPIRON-700M-LAPTOP-2-0-GHz-1-5-GB-RAM-120-GB-HDD-/270707191315?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item3f0767ee13

From what I understand, a lot of schools are giving students iPads. I'll pick that up or a Xoom here soon because I want something light and easy to haul around the house....especially during fantasy season.

iPads are getting crazy traction in the education and corporate markets. I have some behind-the-scenes access to market data and it's VERY surprising.

Why would you get the Xoom? Apple hater? That's really the only reason I can see going with one.

Not really. The Xoom costs $70 more than the comparable 32GB 3G iPad and it has two cameras which the iPad does not. I think the reason people have been exclaiming that the Xoom is overpriced is because everyone assumes that the Apple product is the always going to be the most expensive. So if something is more expensive than Apple it must be overpriced.

Never mind the fact the Xoom has a few more features (really just the cameras) and that Apple was VERY aggressive in pricing the iPad. Don't know if it's really worth it to get a Xoom, just saying it's not wildly overpriced like some make it out to be. If iPad 2 comes out with the dual cameras and undercuts the Xoom then you could say it's overpriced but even then, you're only talk $70 (if Apple prices the iPad the same).

I'll never understand your type. Enjoy your throwaway products!

Re: What are kids usin' these days for class laptops? - WRXtranceformed - 02-16-2011

I just gave away my iPod touch to my friend's little daughter who is turning 5 in a few days. That's how little respect I have for Apple products
