"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Thanks guys! Yeah, it really helped for him that he owned one so he knew what to ask about. I also sent tons of pictures and videos, as well as scans of the body shop invoice and pictures of the fender bender last year.

I'm still torn on new Canyon vs. barely used Sierra. But I just got done measuring my garage and the Canyon will fit nicely with a little room to spare....and the Sierra definitely doesn't. All signs are pointing toward my gut, either truck would be awesome but the Canyon is pretty perfect for our lifestyle right now.

Aw man, all that talk of custom ordering a vehicle...for a truck? ;-)

Good luck with the sale! The buyer booking a flight is promising - though both times I flew out to buy a car, I always wound up paying extra and taking time off to get there ASAP. Dunno how he can wait until January!

Heh, of all the vehicles I could custom order, a truck would be high on the list. There are SO many different ways to order trucks compared to most passenger cars - cab size, bed size, two-tone paint vs single color, various tow packages, open or LSD rear end, final drive ratio, etc etc.

The difference seems to be that cars will come with a few different packages you can pick (I want M-Sport but not Premium) whereas trucks will offer the trim level (yay, Lariat!) but then still present another 25 options to configure.

Oh, and Lee, the Canyon fitting in the garage is a big plus. Hell, even my Yukon won't fit in my garage (it might if I moved the tool boxes and shelving, maybe) which makes it a pain sometimes.

The Colorado/Canyon twins are fairly close to the GMT400/GMT800 "full-size" half-ton Silverados of 10-20 years prior. They are certainly large/capable enough for most folks.

BJ - Yeah ha I always told myself if I was going to buy another brand new car and pay that premium I would spec it out exactly how I wanted it. If I can find the exact truck I want I'm not opposed to buying it off of a lot, but like Jake said even the GMC dealer alluded to the fact that there a bunch of other things you can customize that aren't on the option sheet.

Jake - For sure, it would take a lot of stress off of my plate if I could keep it garaged. That last point though about the size is exactly what I keep telling myself. It really isn't a small truck by any means so I really think it will be fine. The V6 vs. V8 is what I keep coming back to, but what's keeping the Canyon in the game is that I have experience with that engine in the past...i'm pretty sure it's identical to the engine in my old CTS. The engine was one of the only good things about that car. It would get much better fuel economy than the V8 in the Sierra (which doesn't matter a lot because it won't get driven much, but still important when we take it to travel), still has a respectable tow rating if I ever need to tow something lightish and it's only about 50hp down on the V8 (which I could make up about 30 of that with a cheap Trifecta tune that I have used before).

It would be nice to be able to put the upcoming Denali trim into the conversation for the extra creature comforts like cooled seats that I have grown to appreciate. But that isn't slated to drop until later next year I think and that will price it likely well over $45k....which at that price point I would be dumb to not just get a lightly used Sierra Denali and just deal with parking it out on the street. I do love the All Terrain trim anyway, the carbon fiber trim and bolsters on the seats is very choice!

If I was to custom order anything it would be a truck as you both said. I play around with the configurator all the time for a newer 2500/3500. When I hit $65k (fairly easily), I close the browser and cry a little.

I built an F-250 how I'd want it a week or so back. Slowly moved my cursor to the little "X" in the corner of the window as I glanced at the "MSRP" tally that kept going up. Cry

Because I've lived in the south too long

Actual reasons in no particular order:
- as a second vehicle truck more practical for house stuff
- frees up some $ for a bigger house in the nearish future without changing my investment strategy
- traffic has gotten heavy enough here that there is nowhere to really open the car up anymore
- all I do is stress about people smashing into the Jag again because the drivers are so bad here
- I miss driving a truck and have lusted after one for a while
- if we start to have kids, I would not put one in the Jag and I would like to have more than one vehicle option for car seats
- truck gives us another option to drive up north to see family (roads too bad on our farms to make that trip in Jag)

Basically just embracing my practical, red-blooded conservative southern side :p

It seems that once you've owned a truck, it's hard to live without one. One of those things where it doesn't check all of the boxes, but it checks some that a car just can't. That is, until you buy a fully optioned Sierra, then it checks all of the boxes except "Good gas mileage" and "Easy to negotiate turns/traffic".

The new GMs will do an honest 21-24 MPG highway. Direct injection, cylinder deactivation, aero everywhere, etc.

When I had that Tahoe rental - with the new 5.3L - it was doing 23 mpg highway and about 16 around town.

^^ Yep, it's amazing how much more fuel efficient trucks are getting. The trifecta tune includes an eco mode that nets another 2.8 mpg which would get up it close to 29mpg in the 305hp trim. Even bone stock I'll take 25-26 mpg out of a truck! Anything would be an upgrade over a big supercharged v8 in that category

If you are thinking small truck I just traded a 2014 Tacoma Crew TRD-Off Road with 21k on the clock. It was my father-in-law's truck he had it from new. But asides from that why is Ram not on your radar? Obviously I can't help with a small truck (for now) but if you decide to go fullsize the offerings are very competitive. I had a 2014 GMC Sierra crew a few months back that I drove a bit and it was a damn nice truck but I think the Ram does it better for less money in an even up comparison on trim levels. 5.7's with the 8-speed ZF are getting real world 20mpg and EcoDiesels are getting mid-upper 20's in crew cab 4x4 configurations. Also just FYI if you are stuck on a Silverado I can get 2014/15 crew V8 (I think 5.3?) fleet trucks (LT1) all day long and I will hook you up.

I actually test drove a 2016 Tacoma limited and liked it a lot, except you can't adjust the seat up and down which was a deal killer. I couldn't get comfortable in it and my wife couldn't drive it if she had to without like a booster seat. Old tacos were the same, and they also have less power and worse gas mileage than the GMCs. Dodges really aren't on my radar for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because I'm pretty sold on a mid size truck.
