before thinking about the v8, shouldn't the current motors be considered?

- PDenbigh - 05-05-2005

They can be considered, sure - but a stock XR engine isn't going to be wonderful for thsi project. Espically not knowing the maintainace history. If maintained properly they are pretty durable and have a lot of power potential - however too long b/t oil changes, a few overheats, slightly off timing, any of which can drastically reduce the life of this engine.

Take $800, it would be much easier to swap in a good used t-bird V-8 than to get the inline 4 to equal potential. A turbo engine inherantly gets abused sometime in its life (and I predict more so than the T-bird V8, no stats to back that up though).

i whole heartedly agree, considering the rarity of those cars, more than likely they were ran real hard. a V8, whether it be chevy or ford is like finding air, they everywhere!!

- HAULN-SS - 05-05-2005

If this had all happened about a week ago..I jsut sold a 305 v8 rotating assembly for like 200$ ;x 5.0 litre (heads block cam pistons crank...)

MM,

Got the extension. Now the planning begins!

Quote:I was able to get the extension, sorry about responding so late. My father actually had to catch up with the guy at his home. So next weekend is a go for us. Now I just need to get you the pictures.
Thanks again.

800?? I got us a 95 302 w/ 115k miles for 200obo Smile He will even throw in a FTI custom N/A cam for just a tad more. Get a carb intake and a holly 4bb, sucker will make close to 400hp. Drop in a 100hp dry shot, all total $500 for 500hp.

My educations on Merkur engine swaps is a little lacking...dropping a ford v8 in this vehicle is easy?

What kind of rear-end do they have? I assume it's rear wheel drive. Any idea on where/how to get a tranny?

Apparently it's both quasi-easy (as easy as any honda swap) and results in a much more powerful, torquey, reliable and mild-tempered engine. Our logic here is that the 2.3 came in Merkurs, Rangers, T-Birds, Cougars, and Mustangs and of those cars, only the Merkur and the Ranger *didn't* have a V8. But there's plenty of room for a V8, so mounts and a custom driveshaft should be all that's required. (Then again, isn't that all that's required on any engine swap?)

The rear ends are IRS, similar to a T-bird, maybe?
