Possible Road Course @ VMP

Quote:Plans To Build New Track
Similar to VIR in Danville

Plans To Build New Track
DINWIDDIE - With the Virginia Motorsports Park set to host their final NHRA Virginia Nationals this weekend, they are beginning to look ahead to future events at the park.

VMP announced that they will be building another track on their property in Dinwiddie.

It will be a 2.5 mile road course that will be similar to the Virginia International Raceway in Danville and courses like Watkins Glen in New York.

The track will be used for testing and racing circuits and would be closer to the population than Danville.

Listen, I know its a long shot, but if it happens should be cool. Not a very informative article either, most people are on the ill believe it when I see it boat. But they do have other offerings, besides drag racing, and with the NHRA leaving, they are gonna need another large source of revenue. http://www.virginiamotorsportspk.com/

 Seeking Alumni/Jedi knowledge: Post-grad stuff
Posted by: Goodspeed - 11-05-2009, 09:45 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (33)

So, hopefully this will provide a forum for a) you to type something when you're bored at work and b) me to get some helpful input. Hell, given the student/alum involvement in MM maybe this can be referenced by later grads at some point.

So I'm graduating in December and am looking to get more/better ideas of what steps to take from there in terms of job searching/moving/finances/etc. etc. Knowledge is power, and there are a lot of you on here that are recent grads with hopefully some good advice to share Smile

A little info first, my program of study took a little over 4 years (BA - Int'l Affairs), which is ultimately good for me and I'm glad. One, I didn't want to graduate in May given the job market at that time, and two, it means I will be in Harrisonburg until next summer due to my apartment lease. As per my initial plan, this should give me time to focus full time on job interviews, necessary travel and the like.

*This semester especially has been my hardest and busiest, and so I've chosen to focus on school allowing me to get A's rather than try to juggle school and the job hunt. This is also largely due to my lack of interest in interviewing/traveling for the overwhelming abundance of NoVA jobs represented at JMU, as this is the one area I do not want to move to.

So here are my basic questions/comments, feel free to add any plus answers you feel necessary:

What did you do immediately after graduation?
- Did you immediately have a job lined up? Or did you take time off? Looking back, what would you of wanted to do now, if you could change things?

Did you prefer location over job, or job over location?
- i.e. Has anyone here done the former, and if so, how did that work out for you? This is what I'd like to do, given I'll (hopefully) have the time to travel a bit. I'm thinking west coast/PacNW area as thats my favorite region of the US, with family nearby. I've travelled/lived everywhere, so location is very important to me.

How did you come about finding your first job, or did it find you?
- What was most valuable? Word of mouth? Posting your resume? Browsing the myriad of online/print classifieds?

What online services did you use (Monster, LinkedIn, etc), and if so, were they useful?
- Obviously a huge outlet for getting your name out there, with very little time/effort required on my/your part. But does it work, and what would you recommend?

Where did you live post graduation? Location, and type (apartment, townhouse, stand alone etc.)?
- Did you have to live in the slums for a while? Did you sacrifice living conditions for proximity to work/traffic, and if so, would you do it again?

How long did it take you to become financially stable?
- This is a big one. Did you start saving 10% every paycheck immediately? Or did you have to live paycheck to paycheck, and for how long? Where can I go for good financial advice these days?

(If so) How long before you took out some sort of loan, and how have you been able to manage your money?
- I'll admit, this is more about wants versus needs. I've been in school all my life, and want a hot new ride as a present to myself. Positives/negatives of doing such? Building credit history vs. spending money that could be better spent?

Are you able to afford to live without roommates, and if so, how long did that take you?
- I can do either just fine, but at this point I'm leaning towards living by myself

Rent....but for how long until you buy?
- Big into the future here, but how long did it take you until you could afford a mortgage? When did you start looking at your own home? How has a home purchase affected your finances - any room for a car payment? Savings?

- Thanks

BMW tries to take on the 911 GT3 and.......
Posted by: REED - 11-05-2009, 04:24 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (7)

fails, hard.

The new M3 GTS - a stripped down, pumped up M3, just like the GT3 and GT3 RS

Link

I respect what they are did, but the price is just so far out of whack that I can't see why anyone would buy one.

I did a little research

M3 3700lbs 415hp $60K
GTS 3200lbs 450hp $163K (110 Euros)

911s 3200lbs 355hp $88K
GT3 3075lbs 415hp $112K
GT3RS 3031lbs 450hp $132K

if i was looking for a pimptastic trackday car, that $30K buys a lot of tires for the GT3RS

 Free: The MM Couch
Posted by: Ryan T - 11-05-2009, 02:02 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (21)

I received this couch in exchange for sexual favors (on the couch) from Justin about 2 years ago. It's the big, blue, L-sectional couch with a fucked up foldout bed. It has survived life at 2 MM Squire Hill houses and is currently located at my townhouse near Copper Beach. I have since moved away and my roommate is replacing the couch with a new one; so anyone that would like to inherit the MM couch for free is welcome to do so! Just PM me or post in here and let me know. All you gotta do is go pick it up.

 Bill Cosby and his Cobra

Quite possibly the best storyteller ever describes his brief ownership of one of the baddest Cobras to ever leave S.A.
Cosby describes his Shelby Cobra on Leno

This car also happened to be at the Fords @ Carlisle event back in June of this year, where I took these.

 Some "hot" disease stats
Posted by: Mike - 10-30-2009, 11:05 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (39)

Being a Swine Flu skeptic, I decided to take a deeper look into the "epidemics" of our times... Below you'll find all the "hot" diseases that were all over the news. Gathering this data was a bitch; shouldn't WHO or CDC have a nice chart of this stuff? Anyway, interesting findings...

Year Thing Deaths
1347 - 1352 Bubonic Plague 25000000 (33% of Europeans)
1989 Ebola 224
1996 Mad Cow very few
2002 West Nile 284
2003 SARS 775
2004 Avian Flu 32
2005 Avian Flu 43
2006 Avian Flu 79
2007 Avian Flu 59
2008 Avian Flu 33
2009 Swine Flu 5600

Did I miss anything?

Go Like Hell...a must read for those into vintage racing
Posted by: fiveoh2go - 10-30-2009, 10:22 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (3)

I learned about this book while over on the FGTForum. Go Like Hell takes on the topic of the legendary Ford vs. Ferrari battle at Le Mans in the mid 1960's. Even though this is essentially a history text, it reads like a novel. This is one of those books that you can't wait to find out what happens next, very good stuff. Here's the link to the books web page -
Go Like Hell - The book

And just today I was again lurking over on the FGTForum and found out that film rights have been bought by 20th Century Fox and that some A-list actors including Josh Brolin and Brad Pitt have already expressed interest in doing this film. :dunno:
