I decided rather than getting a new car Im going to go ahead and try my luck on 2 wheels. Im taking the motorcycle safety course this weekend and getting my license after that. I was looking at this bike thats about 15 mins north of jmu. Wondering what everyone else thought. I want to know what I should look for and maybe if anyones bored if they want to come and look at it with me? I wont have my license for probably another week or two but I was hoping he could drop it off at my apartment or something till I do.

18,500 miles
couple scratches
Im going to offer $3900 and see what he says. I know $4300 is already pretty cheap for this bike but might as well try.

Not to be a debbie downer but I'd personally be wary of buying a 600 as my first bike. I'd take the course, maybe buy a 500, ride it for a little while (or a long while if you like it) then upgrade later. You won't likely lose much money on the first bike, heck I know people who have made money doing that.
That said, if you do decide to go that route have fun and welcome to the dark side!

I think a 600 is fine as a first bike, as long as your respect it. That said, it seems like that bike is overpriced. Almost 20k miles with scratches for 4 grand? No thanks.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
if you have sold yourself on a 600, a friend of mine just picked up an SV650 and loves it. I rode it around for a day or two and it was real nice.

I would much rather pay $3500 for either of those than a high mileage banged up Ninja
+2 for the 4300 being too much, for those miles. I paid a lot less than that for my 750 with 17k on it, though it is quite a bit older. When I was searching though 4500 was my ceiling, and there are a lot of bikes out there for less than that that are adequate

Yeah I would say 4500 is my upper limit. I would prefer to stay under 4k. I have up to 7k to spend but I want some of the money to pay for insurance/gear and anything unexpected. If you guys hear of any good deals let me know because Im looking to buy one any day now that I find a good deal. . Prefer a nice R6, GSXR, CBR, or something of that nature.

Just for the record, a ~600cc I4 != ~600cc Twin. Not by a *longshot*.

A newer 600 makes a ton of power over 10k, its pretty frentic. 500 or SV650 is a better starter, sell it in the spring for what you pay for it (or more).
Unless you'd rather have a CRX

This was my point, I got a 500 a couple years ago and it was a perfect starter bike. Heck only now am I really craving something bigger, and I know i don't really need it, its just a lust situation...goddamnit adam...

^^^Haha hush David... you'll thank me later.
I'd be more than happy to ride up and look at it with you man. My girlfriend actually has an 06 636 too and I've ridden that some so I would at least have something to compare it to. I'm kinda with the rest though and a 600 sportbike might be a bit much for a first bike, but like somebody said if you respect it you'll be just fine. I started with a ninja 250 since I had 0 experience riding anything other than a bicycle. I sold it for $100 less than I paid for it 3 months after I bought it and a friend of mine actually laid it down while he was learning on it too. So RJ is right, you can buy a bike to learn on and really not be out any money except for taxes and title fees and then upgrade when you feel more comfortable.

Seems like a better deal if I talk him down on the price some.

I like that gen r6 but it looks like its been down and had the side fairings replaced to me. They're supposed to have a white decal on them (continuation of what starts on the tank) like whats on the one pictured down in the bottom of the thread. Might be worth a closer look though cause the price is pretty good.

I saw a maroon 06/07 R6 for sale in a lot at the corner of 33W and 42 when were coming back from the last cruise weekend before last. Maybe that one is still there or you've seen it?

Actually, if it fell in the driveway, wouldn't the left peg be bent?

Decent price, but you can get an 03+ SV for cheaper and will be better for you starting out.

Talked to him on the phone and offered 4500 cash as long as everything checks out (i know pretty lowball) and he said 5k is as low as he can go. Said he could possibly deliver it to jmu also.

Take this with a grain of salt since I'm not a rider, but why not buy something slow and old as a starter bike? If you lay it down/crash it/hate bikes/whatever, you'll be out less money and since it's slower there is a smaller chance of it getting out of control while you're still learning the ropes...
