Well, it is against the law.
But it's a good thing that NBC news is protecting us from all of the dangerous car-tuners...because you know if you tune your car, you also sell crack to children, streetrace in the middle of the night, are good freinds with "Dom", and eat babies alive.

You won't get sympathy from me. There is absolutely no reason to take a cat off a street car.

Evan Wrote:*shrug* I agree (well, maybe if your street car is a 500 whp monstor), other then that it doesnt do much good. I just think its kind of crappy. Does the news have nothing better to do? They are after all selling "race" pipes. They have no control over where people drive there car without a cat. It's just kind of annoying, Jay Hass is a big sr20 guy and it sucks to see this happen.

A guy I know has a 400 whp Trans-Am,he took off the catalytic converter and gained 2 horsepower, woohoo. If it gets clogged, yeah,i can see taking it off,but until then, its a useless and retarded modification.

Same reason all my emissions control devices are gone, along with the a/c and half a dozen other things...I didn't want them on the car. This is just another stupid story from a stupid media group that doesn't know a single thing about the subject matter but still thought they could report the story. This is why I do not watch news programs. 'We were shocked to find out mechanics working at performance shops would alter cars!!! You can even convince them to remove the cat and put on an off road pipe!!! That's against the law if that car is then driven on the street!!!' -T

That's almost the kind of story that makes you think somebody had a grudge they wanted to make good on...
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

i just think it's shitty if they blame the shop for that, they should make the customers sign a waver as to not blame the shop for what they want done to the car. I agree though, taking the cat off a car is stupid. If you want a race car build a race car. If you want it to be race and street legal either change out that cat every time you race or leave it street legal.

You want to yank all the emissions crap off? Fine, then your car belongs on a trailer. Period. Street cars have emissions. Grow up. but yeah, the media coverage on it is sensationalist and retarded. Just like usual. Now that you see how the media distorts and sensationalizes something that you do know about, think about that before you believe something that the media reports that you dont know about.

most (cheap, ebay) altezzas are not DOT approved and in fact are illegal.
I believe a few are DOT approved and are more visible

I can think of a good reason to delete a cat in a street car that you're modifying. I'll use the WRX for example.
If you replace the turbo and / or the blow off valve, it is a REALLY good idea to replace the uppipe with a catless version. Cats in the uppipes will occasionally melt due to excess fuel that builds up on them (from the rich conditions caused between shifts of an aftermarket BOV) and can disintegrate into the turbo which can then break and fuck up your engine. It's a good idea to preserve the investment you have in your turbo and your engine to buy a catless uppipe (or remove it and gut your own). It's probably a good idea to run catless with an aftermarket turbo anyway to promote better spool and reduce lag. FWIW, I run with a still catted uppipe until the turbo upgrade and 1 high flow cat that's pretty good at doing its job.

WRXtranceformed Wrote:Cats in the uppipes will occasionally melt due to excess fuel that builds up on them (from the rich conditions caused between shifts of an aftermarket BOV) Well thats an easy solution.... Regardless - precats and cats on the manifold/uppipes etc only affect cold-start emissions and I can see tossing those because their effect is rather small, and they are only in place because some people sitting behind desks create mandates about things they know nothing about. I digress... |
