Track car rentals
#1
Anyone know of any shops or people who rents good track cars for track day/hpde use for reasonable monies?

Im pondering a track day or 2 this year and Id rather not spend the time/money/risk on my Exige.

Ideally would be something not a miata. Been there, done that Tongue

Mid Atlantic in Hburg rents cars but the weekend fee has a comma in it. And it don't start with 1 neither.

Just run that poor Exige. What are you gonna do, break it? Its a Toyota with no miles on it.

I don't believe mid Atlantic does rentals anymore. Greg sold the 370z world challenge car and I don't think he has anything else around.

Trevor Parmer still has his TTB prepped e46 m3. He is trying to sell it but entertaining the rental market still. He just told me he can do a weekend rental for $1650 (MM price). I can put you in touch if you want. Car needs some work and he would have to source a truck and trailer so it can't be last minute.

I don't understand the pricing on some of these rentals. I guess that comes with arrive and drive full trackside support?
I can get skippy school or bertil roos for similar money, with more track time, in a formula car, with some racing (and an scca comp license at the end if I wanted one)

Aside from a 15-20k repair bill in the event of clamshell damage to the Exige (and possible irreparable frame damage), its a matter of just not having the time to prep and maintain it at this point in my life.

Anything not-Miata is up for consideration. Though at least a rollbar and seat would be nice.

Some come with trackside support, some don't. I know that Trevor would be there to assist with anything needed to get you through the weekend. The car is stock motor, ground control suspension, half cage, and sparco seats.

Talk to Drive Gear, they rent out race-prepped (but plenty of people HPDE them) E30s and Miatas.
Now:
'16 Ram 1500 | '97 BMW M3 | Some Press Loan

Then:

Then rent a fully-prepped car. I took out my LS1/M3 on track and really realized how vulnerable it is in a stock-safety car. It honestly made me very nervous. You use to race, I suspect you will be up to speed by half-way through the weekend and be pushing the car. Not having the time to prep/maintain a car also means you don't have the time to spend in a hospital.

Rent a full race car. I decided 2 events ago I won't be driving or even be in cars without full safety (not allowed to instruct either unless in full race car safety). I don't even have a kid like you, but my fiance, my dogs, and my livelihood depend on me having my full faculties. Not worth it for a "thrill" ride.

Edit: Reach out to Eric Wong/Jim Khoury for fun track rentals race cars. They will bring the cars and make sure they are prepped. Eric Wong's Bananarama is capable of 1:20s at Summit, and Jim's E46 M3 GTS3 car is capable of 1:18s. Far and way faster than your exige or miata could ever do, and I beleive less than 2k a weekend brought for you.

DriveGear is also very good, but I bet you want something a bit more fun for HPDE work.

About what do the Drive Gear cars cost, if you just wanted the crappiest one in the fleet for HPDE 1? Sounds like a bitchin' birthday gift idea for my Dad.

Oh wow that's better than I expected, he expressed interest in it years ago but Mid-Atlantic's $2k+ fee was a little rich for his blood. That's way more car and trackside support than you need for an HPDE weekend.

Too bad his birthday was at the beginning of the month, guess I'll bookmark it for next year.

Just FYI, that doesnt include entry fee of $385 and any damages you do to the car.

Renting can go from "economical" to horrendously expensive.

Grand-Am Rental Prices aren't too bad, except when you consider those guys bounce off each other and a bumper will be $600 easily...a motor $10k....Fixing a crashed car $25k+.

For $1500 you can rent a Radical SR3, but that's just for one test day:

http://www.wiskoracing.com/accordion-a/radicalsidebar

Don't know how much consumables and such would cost with that thing. But hey, who cares when you can lap Summit at this pace:

On the other hand, I've never driven or ridden something that fast so it might take a lot of adjustment to sling that around a racetrack halfway decently.

My friend used to work at Wisko, the area they're building the Radicals is insanely awesome to walk around.

I think I saw on their website that they also have a supercharged Exige for rent. Might be a good way to track an Exige without tracking your Exige.

Formula Mazdas seem like they'd fit the bill too, especially since they're a good deal cheaper. Just don't know of any outfits that are doing that nearby.

that looks like a nice option. reasonable prices. Looks like they are nasa focused so hopefully I could talk them into coming out for an scca pdx.

So whats a E30 like to track? I remember when I raced they ran roughly the same laptimes as SMs. Am I going to feel like Im driving car with an 18th century carriage suspension?

I really don't think so, not if the bushings have been done and it has something like SpecE30 springs/shocks and decent tires. Should rotate well, be predictable, and won't mind eating up some curbing. The ABS is a little primitive.
