Genuine car enthusiast was lost yesterday... Pretty sad about this. He had a huge impact on a lot of people.

A true loss for sure. A very charitable guy who by all accounts was one of the kindest, most down-to-earth Hollywood types out there.

Its pretty terrible that both of them went, and that both left behind children:

Quote:Walker, who leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter, was an investor in the Always Evolving car shop in Valencia, California.

While at the event, Walker and Rodas decided to take the Porsche GT out for a spin.

One witness, Jim Tort, who was at the event told the NY Daily News, Rodas' eight-year-old son tried to save his dad.

'I ran over afterwards, I was trying to find Roger's son.

'I found out his son had jumped the fence and gone over. He was trying to get his dad out.

RIP he definitely seemed like a genuinely good soul. Indeed he died doing great things for the world and surrounded by what he enjoyed and defined his life. You really can't ask for more than that.

Very sad to see. He and F&F were so I influential in the scene. They were in the middle of filming Fast 7 and rumor is they plan to continue in his honor. Will be very interesting to see what they can make of that.

Its worth mentioning that Roger the other guy killed in the crash was a good friend to the racing community, and to PAS in particular. They were currently mid restoration on one of his cars. I get how "important" Paul Walker is to some of you. But please lets not let that overshadow that 2 men were killed in the accident, not just 1.

I don't mean to sound trite but Rogers was the one speeding and hooning through the office park right?

Walker was a seriously good dude. Per the latest news article:

Quote:Tales of the actor's philanthropy are not new. CNN confirmed one story from a decade ago when Walker noticed a young U.S. military veteran shopping with his fiance for a wedding ring in a Santa Barbara jewelry store.
"The groom was just back from duty in Iraq, and he was going to be deployed again soon and wanted to buy a wedding ring, but he said he just could not afford it," saleswoman Irene King told CNN. "I don't think the soldier realized how expensive those rings are, about $10,000."
Although Walker noticed them, the couple apparently did not know who he was, King said.
"Walker called the manger over and said, 'Put that girl's ring on my tab,' " she said. "Walker left all his billing info, and it was a done deal. The couple was stunned. She was thrilled and could not believe someone did this."
King called it "the most generous thing I have ever seen."

Yeah I don't normally care much about celebrity deaths but this one makes me sad because Paul Walker was one of us. He was a genuine enthusiast and gave the automotive community a lot of entertainment over the years, even if it was over the top. Stories I've read about people that have met him have always shown him to be a kind, generous guy.

Just goes to show that even a very skilled driver can perish from a brief foray into motorized tomfoolery.

Yep. This is a tragedy, but it should serve as a reminder to us all that The Street Is Not The Track. There's a time and place for driving 10/10ths, but it isn't on a public road.

CNN story "Is the Porsche Carrera GT too dangerous?" Because it has no TC and 650HP. They keep ignoring the fact that the driver was a racer and is used to no TC and the HP. But, just being stupid on the street is not the reason they died at all.

I don't think CNN is far off the mark talking about how dangerous the CGT is. Even Porsche's test driver admitted to being very afraid of the car. It's been proven extremely unpredictable numerous times. http://jalopnik.com/porsche-that-killed ... 1474240192

oh jeez, yes CNN, let's say it was the car's fault. Just like when someone gets shot it's the gun's fault.

Well one theory I've read on the accident is that the steering pump failed and spewed steering fluid all over the place. Under certain circumstances that could've led to a loss of control.

AS for the Carrera GT being inherently dangerous, I think that's somewhat subjective. Dangerous compared to what? Other cars with 650 hp? Other Porsches? A Honda Civic (with a Spoon engine and double shot of NOS)? I have no doubt that the Carrera GT will kill you if you make a mistake, but I think the same could be said of the Viper or older 911 turbos.

The Carrera GT was however the car that killed the driver and passenger at a track day at California Speedway a few years back.

That theory seems to be getting tied to the fire as well saying thats why the fire was in the front while the engine is in the back (surprised the news got that part right) but the fire definitely looks like it came from the rear and I would think PS fluid (trans fluid) would have a pretty high smoke point :dunno:

I don't like the term 'dangerous' being used here. That's where I think the news is off. The better term is unpredictable. Read that jalopnik article I posted. You have the test driver and another higher up at Porsche talking about this. The executive at Porsche says a friend of his has a CGT and he refuses to even ride in the car with the guy. If that's not saying something about the car I don't know what is.

I'd have to say that if something is unpredictable and can kill me, it's dangerous. An unpredictable pet lion or an unpredictable parachute would both = dangerous in my lexicon. Although maybe I would say unpredictable if I was trying to be polite to said lion owner. If I ever get the chance to drive a supercar at a press drive and it scares me shitless, I'll remember to say unpredictable instead of dangerous or death trap or holy fucking shit.

Exactly. If I made a supercar, I would consider "holy fucking shit" as the best comment/review I could hope for! Like, that is an 11, right?

pet lion = dangerous = cool
parachuting = dangerous = cool
650hp supercar = dangerous = cool
I don't see the problem here. Certainly people aren't buying supercars because they're safe and easy to drive. My 2002 was neither safe, nor easy to drive. Therefore, I liked it. :dunno:
