Maybe you should stop mentioning this on every message board we go to?
Chris thinks he's funny because I was caught in an unavoidable situation. I don't find the humor, do you? Somebody did something stupid (they were found to be at fault according to the off duty police officer that was behind me), fled, and now I'm out probably $2000. TRULY HILARIOUS!
Chris, fuck yourself.

The front end of my bike is in about a billion pieces thanks to some asshole that is oblivious to other traffic and nearly caused a 5 car accident (cars darting in all directions while slamming their brakes). Bike don't stop as fast as cars and I ended up in the back of one of them (one lane over, I tried swerving)... They fled the scene...

A jackass in a Miata apparently didn't like sport bikes and came to a sudden stop in the middle of a turn for no reason at all. He was staring at me in the rear view the whole time so I knew it was just to fuck with me. Thankfully I had a really padded following distance and was only leaned slightly so I came to a stop a few feet from his car.

Man, and I thought you and Evan got along great.
Sorry about your luck, Mike. I hear that you're not too badly off in the injury department, though, so count your stars.

Yeah I'm not too bad... scuffed elbow, decent gash out of the knee, scuffed calf, pretty bad bruise just above knee, 6" x 6" rashing on my back, sore neck (helmet hit license plate of car in front of me).

Streetfighter the bike Get some new tires on it and keep on riding
Glad you are OK though.... unfortunate situation indeed.

Chris, fuck yourself. You were behind someone and hit them. I don't care if the car could stop in 3.4 feet, if you couldn't avoid them then you shouldn't have been so close. Bikes take longer to stop? Then back off. Your responsibility and your responsibility alone to keep a safe distance regardless of anything that happens in front of you short of someone pulling out right in front of you.
Your situation sucks and I'm sorry you got so hosed but I don't believe that you are absolutely clear of responsibility for how it ended up. I told you last night what I thought and you didn't seem to have a problem with it then.
We've started to see a pattern emerge in your luck riding, is it coincidence? If I'm an asshole for calling attention to that, so be it, you would do the same thing. You don't really expect any less, do you?

mike....
i'm sorry man. i had no idea. i'm really glad you're alright. i hope you can collect some insurance money or something to recoup the losses.
how fast was the traffic?
Chris, I'm sure that you've followed too close in traffic without realizing it... you just dont know it because no one slammed on their brakes in front of you. I'm sure I do it, probably too often, and the brakes on my bike arent the best. It sucks, and it happens, and yes the rider is ultimately responsible for what happens between the handlebars, but Mike wasnt doing anything stupid or irresponsible and bashing him on the interweb doesnt help anyone. What if you had dumped it on Sunday after you hit that patch of gravel? No one gave you any shit for what was nearly a pretty bad situation, its just one of those things that happens at one point or another.
You can look at the factors that caused it - maybe the old tires... maybe Mike wasnt as attentive as he should be, or practiced enough panic stops in a controlled environment. Either way, all he can do is put Humpty Dumpty back together and learn from it. I've dumped it twice doing stupid things, but I like to think that I've learned and I've been making a pretty serious effort at improving my riding over the past 2-3 months. None of us are perfect, and we're all going to have an accident on the street at some point.

i think reminding him this soon after the incident doesn't help. i'm sure he'll leave a little extra room next time, but i think bringing it up later rather than sooner will be a little easier on the situation. Make fun of it later, right RJ? (not the same situation, but whatever)
mike - lemme know if i can help in any way with working on it or finding parts or gear.
.RJ Wrote:Mike wasnt doing anything stupid or irresponsible and bashing him on the interweb doesnt help anyone.
I really fail to see where I bashed him. All I said was maybe he wasn't ready to have his M (read: solo riding). Since both times he's gone down are fairly "routine" aspects of riding wouldn't that strength the argument that perhaps riding isn't as "instant on" as he's done it. You flamed the shit out of him for riding on a permit right after getting his bike, I don't understand how my comment is any different.
I'm curous though... Mike, how much emergency braking (in parking lots, etc.) have you practiced with your bike?
