Nick, Sylvia, and I tore into the engine this weekend. We removed, cleaned, and disassembled the head. It has no cracks between the valves (typical problem) and will be headed to the machine shop during the week. It will be getting a good cleaning, a pressure test, and a 3 angle valve grind to match the new stainless steel valves. We removed the oil pan and then dropped the balance shafts. We cut the chain and removed them. The pistons were then removed and we were delighted to find that the pistons had newish looking bearings and rings and had been marked by a rebuilder (I, II, III, III). Finally we packed everything up in bags and a new tote (which was destroyed by the crooks). Pics will be up soon... Nick and my buddy dust have all the pics.

Here are some pictures from this weekend. No one reads or posts if there are no pictures!!
Most of my pics are still on the garage camera but here are some Nick got on his until Dusty can ship me the others.
Here is the head cleaned and dissassembled. You can see the other one (still dirty) in the background. I'm giving that one to Nick.
Another view. Also our workbench. I have some good pics comparing the new valves to the old valves on the other cam.
Here is the engine with the Balance Shafts still on it. Removing them removes a fair weight from the car, adds about 12hp, increases rev speed, and adds 1qt more capacity to the oil pan.
This view is of course from the bottom with the oil pan removed. This is the engine after removal...
The balance shafts meet their fate in the trash
View of the top deck...no pistons. The rings were VERY tight and the bearings apeared almost new. Also the rods were maked by a mechanic indicating they had been removed.
We also cleaned and organized parts to make the rebuild go faster. This box is the one the robber stepped on and broke...leaving the only clue of one footprint.
On a side note
we helped Dusty put a new IC on his car and we called it quits for the weekend.

white97dsm Wrote:if you would let me know before the weekend i would gladly come down for the day and help out dude....give nick a break from havin to hang out with you all the time Haha it isn't too bad being around the turbo dodges. After all it is boost!
Nick
Well, after the break-in last week I spent all this weekend cleaning up my store room (point of entery) and building new shelves. Now all the turbo car parts are up off the ground in good shape. I also purged duplicate parts. I need to sell the 3 extra alternators, 1 intake, 1 valve-cover, and a few other things.
Items aquired from the net and found during clean up (forgot I had)
-Accufab direct rail mounted adjustible fuel pressure regulator
-Nippondenso 120A alternator...stock is 90 amp
-Big throttle body from V6 minivan

I don't know anything about balance shafts. I can't figure out from the pic WTF is going on with those. Was it some chain driven box of crap or what? And how is it ok to just remove them? 'Splain it to me!
Well, the balance shafts are a pair of cam-like weight shafts that rotate in-sync with the engine. They are driven by a chain off the crankshaft. That box incases them and oils the shafts. The end comes off (we never bothered, we just cut the chain) and you can remove the gears off them and remove them that way. They require timing and must be set at TDC before timing. They are for "second order" vibrations. Most 2.5s have them but a great number don't. No 2.2Ls had them and early 2.5s and 2.5L Dakota engines lacked them also.
Basically... they do almost nothing.
The gains from removing them-
12-14hp
Less about 10lbs
Oil pan holds 5.5 qts of oil
Quicker revs

Much less dramatic then that. Its more like it makes the change in the ashtray go "gingle gangle" instead of "ringle jingle" at idle

Works for me. You guys compensating for something?

why does a large FMIC always constitue as a compensation for something???? You know you want to Rex....
pic works now, that thing is friggin big. Which pile is that going on (I'd assume its for the 'tona, but nothing can be assumed with this project(s) any more).
white97dsm Wrote:why does a large FMIC always constitue as a compensation for something???? You know you want to Rex....
*sigh* I keep waiting for someone to say "Yes, we're compensating for the increased intake charge temperature caused by the compression of the turbo."
Then, finally, it will be funny to me.
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
wait it corrects that? shit mine isnt even connected to anything its just bolted there
Dave, Yes this is for the Daytona. Sylvia says "oh! I'll post it" and she ran up to the parts department's computer. lol Anyways, new items of discussion are the pistons. I need a set. So I think I'm gonna forge the internals, cut out the rod tops for the larger wrist pins, line-bore the block, and have all that headwork done. Its crazy I know but it will give me a BULLIT PROOF block when it is all said and done. I'm also still trying to get ahold of Chris over at TU to talk about the turbo. I'm gonna try to talk him into giving me a trade-in value on it so I can get the pistons, turbo, and everything I need from him. Its a win-win situation.
