Still probably too much for chan. I mean he could go with a OnePlusX for 10 dollars more and no bs?

But I think he wants something under 100 dolla.

Thanks for the ideas, is there something special about this 5x that I should want to pay for? Looks like a 5" screen running android like everything else. :dunno:

And this OnePlusX, at first glance seems another Chinese phone company selling something others do but for more. What am I missing?

Buy your 60 dollar phone. It'll go nice with your hi point.

It's tempting! I might buy two!

Actually thinking about an iPhone again now. I dislike the OS and lack of SD card slot, but at least updating the OS is possible and they mostly work. My last two Androids have been ultimately frustrating and have short, locked, crashy lives despite coming from reputable companies.

Is that because you're buying cheap Android phones? Tongue Which ones have you had?

I had a Galaxy S4 since it came out years ago until recently and only had to replace it because the power button broke when I dropped it...got a new one for free. The newer top line Androids are really nice and are lasting most folks a long time, even during new software rollouts.

5X is a Nexus device, so it is a "Google" phone. As fresh Android updates come out, you get it first, no waiting for the carrier to "Approve" what the creators of the OS have done or for Manufacturers to skin it. Also, vanilla Android, so no buggy skinned LG/Samsung/HTC version of Android.

No bloatware apps cause it hasn't been ruined by the Carrier's with VZW navigator, VZW ringback tones, etc, etc

As for longevity, people are still using/getting updates for the Nexus 5, which came out in 2013. Rex has a Nexus 6 which came out in 2014, and is still just as good today as it was when released.

Ok this all sounds totally different than what I've experienced with NEC, HTC, and Samsung. You basically get what you get, with bloatware that cannot be removed, and software and OS with no garbage collection, OS updates aren't available, maybe you get 6-12mo out of it then every month the thing's out of space and crashing even though you have everything allowed moved to SD card and a few apps beyond what came with it. Without unlocking and rooting there's no hope.

So it had 5.0 something and updated to 6? This is totally alien to me. We have 3 Android phones here, none of them ever allowed updates to the OS.

Well I'm glad I asked. :dunno:

*edit* wait, LG makes the Nexus 5x and Huawei (wtf?) makes the 6. So... LG is bad with bloatware, unless it's good with no bloatware? You guys almost had me.

Chan Moto E is the phone for you. (2nd gen LTE version) $50. Moto G if you want to spend a bit more.
They are mostly stock android, and have been getting OS updates pretty quickly and review at the top of the class of their price points. Stay away from that Blu. No LTE is becoming a big deal, since carriers are re-farming their HSPA spectrum and turning it into LTE.

Its amazing how good even low end phones are now. Im a flagship phone snob but I spent $30 on a super low end LG (would have preferred moto e but out of stock at that time) for a backup phone to use with Ring+ service and I am surprised how good and how snappy it is.

Well even the G is cheaper than this other stuff mentioned here. Will investigate thanks.

Oh damn why didn't I know about this!

Yes, my S6 was on 5.0.1 or some shit. My previous S4 got a major software update too. If you aren't getting them your phone is probably old enough that your carrier has decided not to support upgrades (it's all up to the carrier with Android).

I have a 5X with Google Fi for my work phone - there is definitely minimal bloatware, if any at all. Were I you, I'd get that for the $200 sale Google is offering if you sign up for Fi service.

So I started looking at cable modems and got lost pretty quickly. Should it have as many uploads channels as download? Most seemed to be heavily one sided but I read they should be equal I thought. Like 16 both ways instead of 16 and 4. Also, Whats a good router?

I actually switch to my mobile data quite a bit while at home. My question is can I buy any modem to replace their shittastic one? And then I'll probably pick up a new router at some point.

Yes and no - they should provide their own "certified" list you can choose one and try and purchase on Amazon. That way they can't bullshit if for whatever reason you have to call for support and they try to blame it on your modem.

That being said, any DOCSIS 3.0 capable unit should be just fine for your modem. I've had my eye on this onehttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B0111MRLES/ref=...QH2Q&psc=1 just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

C'mon man, we've been over this at least twice. See above.

As for router/AP (AGAIN) get a refurbished WRT1200AC. I use it at my house, my future mother and father in law's house, my parents house and my mom's work. Solid router/AP with great coverage.

Yea but idk what that means and when I start looking for a decent price and quality one, I run into different options that idk if are important or not. Also, I don't really have a working computer so going back to find exactly what was said is very difficult on Tapatalk.

And I'm finally getting sick of my shitty connection. Having to switch to mobile network almost full time and with the gf home for the summer and on the WiFi too, it's gotten even worse

Why don't you start by calling your provider and telling them your issues to make sure you are getting the correct service with no interruptions?

I don't know. The last time I called to get them to turn off the free public WiFi feature in their new modems, I spent like 2 hours on the phone before they even understood I wasn't trying to turn off the house WiFi. Just their stupid free Internet for my neighbors feature
