It usually depends on the dealer, fees can vary from $15-50 here in NC. You can shop around if that is the case in VA

ruger 10/22 available at local big box for $189. no brainer?

Would you ever use it? I don't think I have a use case for a rifle... except maybe sniping zombies.

Sooooo.... my emergency preparedness plan now needs a rifle. I'm thinking something that can 1) kill me some small furry things for food and 2) deter people from farther away than a shotgun or handgun. I care less about the people dying - I just want them to go away. Also, I'd like to spend <$300. GO.

Weeeeeeeell. Put some slugs in your shotgun and you've got a very effective "from further away than a handgun" weapon, though with low capacity and high recoil.

I'd probably look into either a 10/22 or the new savage .17hmr semi auto. If you do choose a 10/22, I highly recommend a lightweight "pencil" barrel that's threaded. Neither is very intimidating against 2 legged predators, but it's highly effective on small game.

For larger game, I know there's elk and mule deer out there, would I be remiss in recommending a PTR-91? .308WIN would make a great hunting rifle, they are pretty accurate, although hell on brass and with a stout recoil impulse. And of course only Ze Germans could make a stamped steel rifle heavy but whatever. Way out of your budget, but you could get into one of those brandy new for 850, definitely less used. And if it's good enough for Africa...

But if you have a nice semi auto shotgun (and you do) you can load with slugs for longer engagements if you have to. Less than ideal, but still effective. Therefore, in my opinion, the semi auto rimfire is what you're missing.

I do need to store some slugs, as everything I have on hand (even though I have a good amount) is birdshot.

I'm mostly thinking small game, when the tsunami wipes out all of Seattle and I have to hunt for food in the Cascades.

I'm still a huge fan of my 10/22 takedown especially for my bug out supplies. The one thing I will say is that for hunting you would probably want to budget another $150-$200 for a decent scope and rings that fit nicely in the bag with it. I cheaped out and got a $40 weaver and it's just ok for 25 yard range shooting. I'm not really sure I would trust it to be accurate if my life depended on killing something with it. You could use the iron sights but if you can hit a small mammal or bird beyond 25 yards with that thing you deserve a medal

Forgive me if it's been said before but do you let the dealer know about the transfer or do you order the gun and just sent it to them and then go up and "pick it up" (pending background check and wait period of course)

You'll need to talk to the dealer first, yes. The entity transferring "in" needs to have your dealer's "FFL" on file before the transfer can take place.

I have a kit from PSA with Magpul furniture and am not overly impressed with their MOE grip (it's just a nicer rectangular block of plastic after all). I'll need to cop several feels at the next Dulles expo but I've been looking at the Ergo Tactical Deluxe as it has a "hand filling" bulge, which I think would be a definite nice-to-have. However, I don't have big hands (7 1/4" around the knuckles) and this grip seems tailored towards larger ones from what I've read. I feel the MOE is too small for me though in the way my hand bunches up around it - I'm looking at their thinner standard one as well a.k.a. the Blackhawk! grip.

I've had both of these ergo grips on various firearms. The TD feels nice...at first. Then, when you're moving and shooting and your hand start to sweat in your gloves, that 'hand filling bulge' starts to chafe. (twss) I still have a standard ergo on my KAC, but not for long, it felt really good at first and now, not so much.

The Magpul K and SL grips are a little thinner than the MOE. Basically one step "smaller" than the smallest MIAD inserts. The K has a very "kalashnkovesque" grip angle, which suits my style of shooting (nose to charging handle, tactical turtle) very well. For shooting from a bench or rest, it isn't the best.

Hmm, good to know. More browsing led me to the Mega (Hogue) grip, which looks to have a more modest palm swell. I think the TD would be too big for me and would likely force my finger to be in a less than optimal position. Tacticool tangent - I love the Mega logo and wouldn't mind having it somewhere on my build too : P. Part of me wonders if the finger shelves would get annoying after a while but I suppose only experience would tell.
