The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread!

Yeah I run it on my NAS. Nas was $250 + drives so ends up about $450-500 pending drive size. Everyone should have a nas to keep important files and pictures safe IMO so its a multipurpose device, and it uses way less electricity than a real desktop.

if you build yoru own to save $$, just dont cheap out too bad on the cpu. you need some horsepower to do transcoding. just stay away from atom. i3 or even new pentium/celeron should be fine.

So would this with like a 1TB drive be a good option?

Looks like the processor should handle 2 1080 streams at once, which would be a rare occurrence.

4TB drives + this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-My-Book-Live-Duo-4-TB-6-TB-8TB-External-ENCLOSURE-ONLY-/261685311392?pt=US_Home_Network_Storage_NAS_&hash=item3ceda8f7a0">http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital ... 3ceda8f7a0</a><!-- m -->

I have 2 of those... I couldnt imagine not having my backup stuff mirrored. Its a set it and forget it deal too, anything new automatically replicates and if a drive fails, you just pull one out and plug a new one in and it gets rebuilt.

I'm not worried about losing files, we have nothing really worth saving that isn't already saved on our Google Drive. This would mostly be used for torrented top gears and transcode videos pulled from various PLEX channels.

Aside from a few digital copies of important docs, the only thing we really care about are pics and home videos, all of those are on my Google Drive/G+, since they do not consume your Google Drive storage allotment.

Unless I am completely missing something.....

Doesn't look like that Netgear deal will do the transcoding like I thought. Hrmmmmmm

honestly though I dont think it was ever your problem. your bandwidth was fine. its your latency that is fucked, which usually is an issue of routing (external or internal).
like i said, you need to run a wired test, and if possible bypass the router entirely.

also run a pingtest.net and see what it says.
I've rerun the speed tests and ping is back down to similar to my phone on network but Internet is still pretty shitty. It'll load one minute and then the next it'll just sit there until I switch to network.

When you say wired test, you mean actually test it or plug it in and look at the speed?

Also, with channels, 1 was clear for a second. It seems most of the routers are on auto or something and they just keep jumping around.

father in law just picked up a bar and two satellites. for the price, it sounds like shit. you're paying for the fancy networking, which is super cool, but again, all the speakers sounded like shit. i would avoid like the plague based on what i've seen unless you can get it 50% off.

Forgot to post up a quick blurb on the Fire TV sticks we grabbed. Went with 2 of them to replace my 2 Chromecasts, in the Master Bedroom, and Averie's Room.

Big sellers were the remote, so no need to use my cellphone to control content. Plus, we will be buying more digital content and decided Amazon was the best choice. Mostly due to Amazon having an app for all devices regardless of OS, including the Roku and most "Smart" TVs, blu-ray players, and consoles.

So far so good, I have found all the apps we use are available on the Fire TV stick (PLEX, Netflix, Disney Jr, Hulu Plus).

The UI is easy to navigate. Similar to that of the Fire tablets.

However, if you are perfectly fine with your Chromecast, there really is no need to go this route.

If you want a remote and the ability to cast Amazon content through android, without the crappy "Screen Mirroring", I would go with this. But only if you can find it for less than regular price. Had this been at the normal $39, we would still be using Chromecast. Since we have Prime, and they had them for $20 as a promo, we bit the bullet.

Got mine as well. Thought you could only cast if you had a fire phone or tablet. I was playing with screen mirroring last night.

What do you mean by cast amazon content through android?

Poor wording....Amazon's android app doesnt have cast so you have to screen mirror. Where the iOS apps have the ability to cast built in to the app.

Oh wait, just cast amazon? Like the shopping app?

Kinda sucks they won't come out with an app so android /ios users can do second screen like the fire stuff. I mean i understand their logic to an extent and it maybe it just isn't streamlined enough with just an app but I'm not going to change my tablet for a feature like that. Would be willing to pay a few bucks on the app just to see what it's like though.

really like my FireTV. Never liked the chromecast much, it always felt like it wasnt a real streamer.
if chromecast meets your needs no need to pick up the firestick, but for me just having access to amazon prime streaming and a real remote /UI is a major win.

amazon is focusing on miracast (which the firestick has) for screen mirroring/casting for android, which most newer android phones and tablets have.

I'm confused by what you mean by casting. Do you just mean mirroring where my screen is still on on the tablet? Do you mean pushing apps from the tablet to tv like Netflix, but then why would you do that cause the stick already has all these apps on it.

Can I do anything useful using my firestick and tablet besides screen mirroring? It's a normal android tablet, not a fire tablet

Been looking into "Smart" watches, cause yes, I still wear a watch. I wanted something that had some basic fitness functions, good battery life, but I didn't want a phone on my wrist.

I like the LG G Watch R, but it is kinda pricey and a little Dick Tracy to me, the Pebble just seemed too outdated and didn't have the fitness functions I wanted.

So I signed up to be notified about the release of the new Fitbit Surge, it is a smart watch of sorts (text/call notifications)and has built in GPS and HR monitor, along with your normal Fitbit features (steps, distance, calorie burn, "Stairs" altimeter)

They sent out emails Thursday 12/4 to the first 10k or so that signed up to purchase a Surge early, so I bit.

So far so good.....there are a few bugs, but the support folks at fitbit have been very open, and working diligently to resolve issues before their full release in early 2015.

The call/text notifications have been awesome when I am in meetings at work, a quick glance and I can see if I need to step out or just reply when i'm done. This uses Bluetooth 4.0.

Music control is OTW for android, but available on iOS.

Battery life has been about 6 days.

The silent alarms are awesome, your wrist vibrates to wake you up, and since I tend to get up earlier than Casey, she can keep sleeping. Could use some enhancements, currently when you snooze, it doesn't buzz once it goes off again (being fixed). Also some alarm customization (snooze duration, vibration patterns) would be nice, and according to support, are in the works.

It has great visibility in sunlight, and is backlit for lowlight viewing. Would love to be able to just tilt my wrist, like my gshock, and the backlight acitivate automatically. You currently have to touch the screen when in lowlight to activate the backlight.

I wont go into a lot of detail on it's features, since the website kinda gives you everything you need to know..... <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.fitbit.com/surge">https://www.fitbit.com/surge</a><!-- m -->

But I like it, I do not regret the purchase, it isn't just a "fancy pedometer" like other fitbit products. Has a few quirks, since it is an early release, but they are working them out.

I want to like smartwatches, but I just don't think they're there yet. You think the health tracking and notifications are worth the price tag? Seems pricey to me, but I guess fitbit and GPS tech aren't that cheap.

I can't imagine sleeping with a watch on.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Sleeping with it on, def took a few days. But now I dont even notice.

The price ain't cheap, but when a fancy pedometer is $100, and a full on smart watch is $400ish. The Surge meets in the middle. I was also considering the tomtom multi sport cardio, but it doesnt work with android and is huge, plus $300ish?

This is the middle ground I was waiting for.
