Woke up today, got all ready for class, hopped in the car, picked up a friend, and then I hit the red light on reservoir/sheetz. A cop pulls up in the turning lane next to me, no big deal, I'm driving legally. Light goes green, I accelerate at a normal pace already having forgotten the cop since I wasn't doing anything wrong (funny, now that I drive normally I don't pay much attention to them). I pull in to the Festival lot over by the Walmart entrance, park my car, shut it off, and bam there is Officer P.R. McCullough, a good ole' boy, lights a-flashin'. I question my roomate as to what I did wrong, for the life of us we can't come up with a thing. Good ole' P.R. McCullough walks up to the side of the car where I had already gotten out, bag in hand, and tells me that my muffler is illegal... *SIGH* I tell him that I just ordered something quieter and less flashy since I had finally saved up the funds to do so, and that it would be installed within the next week or two (I really did order a new muffler about 4 days ago). He doesn't care, writes me a citation for "Use of unapproved exhaust" and lets me go on my way, now 25 minutes late to class.
I really felt like asking him if he was doing the same citation for all the Mustangs, Camaros, and Harleys I often see around town that are in fact louder than my car, but my judgement got the better of me and I bit my tongue; two ignorant assholes are no better than one...
I've got a court date on March 24. If I have my new muffler (relatively stock looking but 2.5" in/out) installed before then it'll be waived. What a pain in the ass.

Stories like this scare me.
My n1 is flashy and though I can't ever hear it (radio is up) I'm sure some cop somewhere is going to have a problem with it.
I don't understand the wording of your ticket. Unapproved by whom? How much was the ticket for? I'm hoping whoever tickets me first (because it is going to happen) writes down "not stock" so I can go to Monro and all the other exhaust shops in the town and find out how many thousands of "not stock" mufflers they've thrown on cars around here and bring that info to court. Or maybe I'll get a "louder than stock"...I'd love for him to prove I was louder than stock...I have seen a total of 0 stock GS-T's in this town for him to compare me to since I got here, but oh well.
And yeah, if that was me when I got into court I would make a point to ask the officer how many non japanese imported cars he had pulled over lately for the same offense because tickets like this are getting ridiculous.

They will in fairfax county. At some point, some cop will hassle you about it.
Easily arguable in court though.

That's cause it isn't a Japanese Import in their mind. Mate, everyone know's Subaru is from Australia, right?
No worries.

punch the cop in the nuts at your court date.
Actually, I got something of the same on my way back from NoVA with the busted peice. Course, all I had was a rusty tube hanging off the back, so of course it was illegal. When I went to my court date, I told the judge that I had fixed it, didn't even have any pictures to prove it, and he dismissed the whole thing. I still had to pay court fees and the ticket for no front license plate though :? . You'll get out of the ticket, no worries.
-Something you might consider, find an old junk muffler with a big hole in it, and somehow attach it to your car and take a picture, making sure that the rusty hole is apparent. Tell the judge that this is a before picture and that it has since been remedied. The cop doesn't have a picture of your fartcan, so his word is useless. Furthermore, make a note to tell the judge that you had been saving up to fix the muffler, pointed this out to the cop, and still got the ticket. The proceed to explain that the court fees should be waived too, since the muffler was in much better compliance than probably half of the cars in the 'burg. (I know its kinda a long shot, but might be worth a try. Prolly better off just fighting the ticket and paying the court fees).
On a side note, I'll keep my eyes open at Sheetz for McCullough and charge him for any drinks he gets there (pigs get free fountain drinks there  )

ouch, that sucks. I'm still waiting on my ticket thats gonna be like that. Tuffy mufflers made me sign a waiver when they put it on saying that it was my responsibility in full for any tickets i get for the muffler and that it is illegal. I didn't think it was gonna be all too loud but..........yea definitely ticket worthy. I always keep my eyes open for cops and try to shift around 2500 rpms. A cop right near sheetz followed me around for a few blocks but i just coasted a lot and kept it in nice low RPMs. You'll definitely get it thrown out in court though, no doubt about it, still sucks that he was so hard on you and made you late for class though

i got pulled over last year for the same reason. They're just out to get money, sux you have to go to court, and you'll have to pay court fee's regardless which blows. Sorry man.
How much are court fees? What can they do if I refuse to pay them?
My car is in awesome running shape, it gets incredible gas mileage, and I actually make an attempt to change the image of your typical Honda modifier... I even went to the police station yesterday to request that someone be present at our car show to keep idiots in check. I'm now thinking they might just set up shop outside the lot and bust everyone for midifed exhausts... :?

Police presence at the car show would not be a good thing IMO, for many reasons.

Why not? Its a deterrent to theft and jackassery. If the show goes smoothly, its good for the club's reputation in the eyes of the univeristy and HPD.
It also promotes that MM is a safe organization and wants to be involved with the community, rather than a "kr3w" that hates "the man".
If we invite HPD and JMU PD to the car show, and the event runs smoothly, i really do not think they're going to pull people over on the way out. They dont hate JMU students and they wpmt be out to pad their quotas.

I looked up the traffic violation code:
§ 46.2-1047. Muffler cutout, etc., illegal.
It shall be unlawful to sell or offer for sale any (i) muffler without interior baffle plates or other effective muffling device or (ii) gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate on the highways in the Commonwealth a motor vehicle equipped with a gutted muffler, muffler cutout, or straight exhaust.
As far as I know my exhaust is not gutted, cutout, or straight. Anyone else?

make sure thats the code you were charged with, cause if its a city code and you arent registered there you can get out of it like i did with my muffler ticket.
i would ask JMU PD to be there before HPD... they are much more chill and relaxed about the whole thing.

They dont hate JMU students and they wpmt be out to pad their quotas. You are looking at it in a "big happy family" bed-of-roses perspective, which would be great in theory, but from my experience of living in harrisonburg it has little chance of happening that way.
The situation that Mike said may not be far from reality.
Harrisonburg and HPD see the students of JMU as a nusiance at best, not as respected members of the community. Numerous evidence of this over the years, not to mention the attitude every student gets from PD and the community in general. I really dont see inviting them to the car show as changing that attitude, and I dont think its out of the question to think that they could be marking down cars for infractions/laws.
And perhaps more importantly, the import and car show crowd is a paranoid bunch. Put some cops at the show and they will probably be spooked, might leave or might not come back next year.
A Campus police presence would be much better from both perspectives, and do every bit as good as far as curbing the jackassery.
It's a state code, and even so I'm registered in Hburg - I get away with property taxes and emissions. BIA BIA! What is extra cool is that they send my registration renewal to my house in NoVA, so as long as my parents live there I can keep my car renewed in Harrisonburg

And that old guy that brought his GTO and did a big arse burnoot, that was cool.

i like the idea of a police presence at the car show. However, I think the JMU police would be the best ones to ask for. They are far more chill than HPD and its thier turf anyways. I wouldn't put it past the HPD to sit outside of the parking lot and wait for somebody to leave. Talk to the JMU police, they are also more likely to comply since it is a reasonable request, you're on thier turf, and you are giving them plenty of notice before the event.
what would be nice is if we could get them to put MM stickers on their cruisers!
Kaufman was the old guy with the GTO... he retired... i wouldnt know who to ask anymore since so many people left the department.
