So if they decide to place a fee to reactivate used games it makes sense it will be across the board and not just on consoles so you may be SOL regardless.
Or, and try and stay with me here, they could have left it just like it was which was JUST FINE.

WRXtranceformed Wrote:JustinG Wrote:I'm ok with that. My console is always connected to the interwebs. I have no idea the last time I bought a used game. And I don't loan games out. Buying digital used games that decrease in value over time as newer releases come out would also make a lot of sense...as well as overall decreased prices due to the elimination of discs / packaging materials / etc. If customers don't punish MSFT for these measures, when the next console is digital only there'll be zero incentive to allow digital used games.
So then you're left with the possibility that when games go digital only, publishers will lower prices faster. I don't think that'll happen either. Some shrinkwrapped games are already sold as digital downloads and they're the same price as physical copies. Secondly, game publishers could be cutting prices more aggressively right now in order to undercut used sales. If you cut your price to $40-45 after one or two months, a lot of people will just opt to buy the new game rather than buying it used. But they don't do that, because they'd rather charge full price for far longer.
Quote:Ugh. I hate this attitude. "Doesn't affect me right now, so wtf ever."
See, I do both of those things. Rob and I have traded games back and forth numerous times. I buy older titles often used because they're cheaper. DRM and "always online" horsecrap flies in the face of first sale doctrine and is nothing more than a cashgrab. Hopefully, a vocal minority won't think like you, and won't tolerate this kind of corporate douchebaggery.
Oh but it will affect people who don't buy used games, rent games, or loan games. First time Microsoft's DRM servers get attacked or go down, every Xbox One on Earth will be insta-bricked. I don't think a worldwide outage is the most likely scenario, probably a regional outage will gum things up, the same way it occasionally does for Amazon Web Services.
If your internet provider effs things up, *boom* no single player for you. I've got Comcast and I've certainly had to deal with bullshit from them numerous times. No reason for console to stop working altogether because of them.

Soooooooooo fuck 'em. :dunno: Looking at the bigger picture, you need to blame the fact that video games are so popular and these companies have grown so much that they have gone public over the years. When you have shareholders to answer to and growth numbers that you are being held to, as a company you have to find additional ways to generate revenue. "Just put out a few more blockbuster titles a year" and leaving the growth of your company in the hands of developers and project managers isn't necessarily going to leave shareholders confident in your ability to make them more money.
This is America, are you surprised about all this really at the end of the day? It shouldn't be a surprise when a company is forced to turn its efforts toward maximizing revenue growth and boosting stock prices.

I dunno. Plenty of other IP industries seem to manage to rake in fat, obscene amounts of cash without fucking their customers in such a way.
I mean, here's the thing. Consoles have in the past been able to set themselves apart enough from the PC for me to make that choice. But now, if I have to deal with "always on" DRM bullshit (that i can't patch out like i could on a PC) AND no second sale AND still have to pay 60 dollars for a AAA title 6 months later...well shit. Why am I buying an XBone again? Why not just a PC?
I'm trying to think of the 360 exclusive titles i can't live without and I'm coming up blank. Halo4 did little to impress me, and everything else is crossplatform...

Another problem MS is apparently having is with getting the GPU performance they thought they could. They went for a risky architecture and it's not panning out (far more bad chipsets than anticipated) so they're having to lower the clock speed on the GPU, meaning the Xbox1 won't be able to output 1080p at 60 fps. It may also mean more hardware failures although I'd like to think they learned their lesson the last time.

Yes. I've said all along the reason XBox 360 destroyed the PS3 was the online community. I mean the PS3 was better technically all the way around... how else do you explain the success?

Yes. I've said all along the reason XBox 360 destroyed the PS3 was the online community. I mean the PS3 was better technically all the way around... how else do you explain the success? Easy:
A. PS3 was too expensive from the start. When you're 50% more expensive than the competition you're gonna have a tough time moving as many units
B. First mover advantage. 360 came out a year before the PS3
C. System Seller games. 360 had a few more system sellers than the Playstation by the time PS3 dropped (Halo, Gears of War, Forza, etc).
This time around A & B are nullified. Games remains to be seen, I think MSFT may have an edge here depending on what exclusives they have. However, if the XboxOne has all of these DRM limitations and the PS4 does not, it's going to drive a significant portion of the hardcore customer base towards PS4. Casuals may stick with the XboxOne but I don't think casuals are going to take kindly to all of the restrictions either once mom & dad find out that little Jimmy's Xbox won't work over Christmas because there's no internet at Grandma's.

People came for those reasons, they stayed for the community. I don't think so. I think once you've chosen what console you're gonna go with, you're not going to switch unless it sucks. The quality of the community comes in for people who hadn't bought the console yet. Xbox's head start and price meant its install base was bigger, which created a network effect as the years went on. It also came into play for people who own both the PS3 and 360 and were buying cross-platform games. If you're buying COD, the network effect meant you're more likely to buy it for 360.
Xbox LIVE is a better service, but it should be since you have to pay for it. But the reasons more people choose the Xbox LIVE community over PSN start with the merits of the console, then the network effect. If far fewer people buy the Xbox One in the first place, there'll be no network effect, and the community won't be as good. Remember the original Xbox was nowhere near as popular as the PS2. The Xbox 360 only beat the PS3 because Sony fucked up.
Quote:Should we run a pool on market share?
I'd be willing to bet that if PS4 doesn't have a similar DRM strategy to the Xbox One, the PS4 will clearly outsell the Xbox One. Especially since the PS4 will probably will be cheaper, and it will be backwards compatible (with streaming). The only way PS4 would lose in this scenario is if the games suck.
If the PS4 has similar DRM measures to the XboxOne, then it'll come down to games. In that scenario I think Microsoft would have the advantage.
