"Don't pay attention to the camera, dear, it's just the Kinect. I promising it's not filming anything."
Seems like a benefit to me.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

A perfectly distilled opinion on the used games deal:
Quote:If this industry can't find a way to make money off the primary market -- even with DLC and exclusive pre-order content and HD re-releases and map packs and online passes and annualized sequels and "expanding the audience" and AAA advertising and forced multiplayer -- then, if I may be so blunt, fuck it. It doesn't deserve our money in the first place. If an entire industry has its head so far up its ass, is so focused on short-term gains, and has embraced such a catastrophically stupid blockbuster business model in the pursuit of a stagnant market of hardcore 18-34 dudebros that it thinks it has no choice but to take away our first-sale rights as its last chance of maybe, finally, creating a sustainable stream of profits, then it can go to hell.
Anyway, E3 is next Monday, I wonder if we'll get more answers or more "we'll talk about that later".

In other news, people want to boycott buying gasoline for a day.

False equivalency is false. No one needs a gaming console, today's society as we know it would collapse without gasoline.

It's simple supply and demand. Something doesn't have to be "needed" to be demanded. What other alternatives do you have if you want to game? Your iPad?

That's the thing, it's a want, not a need. So if I totally opt out, yeah it'll suck to not play games but there are plenty of other things I do with my time.
As far as partially opting out, I don't have time to play all the games I want right now anyway, so I could easily get my fix on PC. I could even force myself to go with the Wii U and be limited to Mario games or whatever. I don't have to give my money to a video game company that is trying to dick me over. That's why I didn't buy Battlefield 3 (online pass) and that will be why I won't buy a XboxOne or PS4 if they both go down the draconian DRM route.
However, I suspect one or both of them will wise up before launch date. With the size and intensity of the current backlash MSFT has already been backpedaling a bit.

My point is that you're an exception, not the rule. Just like a vast majority of people don't care enough to boycott gas, people aren't going to boycott the next gen consoles.

Apoc Wrote:My point is that you're an exception, not the rule. Just like a vast majority of people don't care enough to boycott gas, people aren't going to boycott the next gen consoles. The gas analogy does not make any sense. You cannot function in today's society without gas. Even if you can walk to everywhere you need to go, the products and services you use depend on gas. Gas is a necessary commodity.
I'm not saying there'll be a total boycott of the next gen consoles replete with torches and pitchforks, I'm saying that a non-trivial portion of the customer base will either delay purchase or not purchase at all. And that the money lost from those people will far outweigh the amount of money MSFT, Sony, and the publishers would get from killing used game sales.
Thankfully some people in the industry get it. Here's what the Take Two CEO (GTA, Red Dead, 2Ksports) said :
Quote:"Our view about used games has been, as opposed to whining or figuring out ways to punish the consumer for buying used games, we've figured out we better delight the consumer", Zelnick said.
Let's push up our quality, which you've seen in our Metacritic scores, and then let's make sure to give people DLC, often free, three or four weeks out; which is the time you're at risk for them trading in their game," he added. "If you can keep the game in consumer's hands for 8 weeks, you almost don't care anymore about used game sales because it's the first 8 weeks that really nail you.

More details are out:
1. You must connect to MSFT's DRM servers once every 24 hours. If you have an internet outage, are on the road, or just moved and don't have internet installed yet (like I was in December), tough shit, you can't even play single player.
2. Microsoft won't charge used game fees, but they've enabled publishers to do so, or block used game sales completely.
3. You can give a game to a friend, but only if they've been on your friends list for 30 days. And the game can only be given once.
4. You will not have the ability to loan or rent games at launch. No indication as to when or if that will change.
Not sure if the "only giving a game once" thing applies to used games or not. I guess if the DRM servers go down, Microsoft has 24 hours to fix it. If there was a prolonged outage like that 4 week PSN outage, no one can play games on their Xbox One period.
EDIT: The PSN outage was a month long

I'm ok with that. My console is always connected to the interwebs. I have no idea the last time I bought a used game. And I don't loan games out.

I would honestly welcome a move to cloud based gaming. If you could go over to your friends house and just log in to your gamertag and have access to all of your games...that makes a lot more sense than lugging a bunch of discs over. Buying digital used games that decrease in value over time as newer releases come out would also make a lot of sense...as well as overall decreased prices due to the elimination of discs / packaging materials / etc.

Ugh. I hate this attitude. "Doesn't affect me right now, so wtf ever."
See, I do both of those things. Rob and I have traded games back and forth numerous times. I buy older titles often used because they're cheaper. DRM and "always online" horsecrap flies in the face of first sale doctrine and is nothing more than a cashgrab. Hopefully, a vocal minority won't think like you, and won't tolerate this kind of corporate douchebaggery.
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
But you can trade games, cause you and rob have been friends for over 30 days, it looks like they put the used games decision in the hands of the game makers. So if they decide to place a fee to reactivate used games it makes sense it will be across the board and not just on consoles so you may be SOL regardless.
