hey just curious why dont they make plastic cased rifle rounds?

I recently read a story about that. The DoD years ago were looking at polymer cased rounds to be used as subsonic ammunition. If I remember, they couldn't keep the pressures and velocity high enough for the rounds to be accurate. It sounds like they were starting to look into it again.

hrm, the compression comes from the chamber, not the casing. set off the primer of a round outside of the chamber and it blows the side right out, the bullet wont even budge.
perhaps plastic doesnt expand quickly/uniformly enough to fill up the chamber or gets stuck on the way out

With polymer you either get a case so weak that something like this happens:


Or it's so thick that you have insufficient volume for the propellant.

Polymer science is always developing, I anticipate seeing telescoping polymer case ammunition before we see full caseless.

Narrowed down the .22 selection to the Savage Arms FVSR:



and the SA TRR-SR:


FVSR is much cheaper and seems to be basically the same gun, I would probably just swap out the stock and it would still be cheaper. The TRR-SR would be great out of the box, just add a scope and bipod.

A .22 isn't exactly a sniper rifle. I mean you want a bolt action gun, that's cool. We have a couple, in .243WSS, and .308. In .22 its about putting lead down range right, semi-automatic for the win. Both of us have 597's and we also have my brother's 10/22. Both really great inexpensive .22 semi-automatic rifles.

There's lots of reasons you shouldn't.

But in the end, a 10/22 is going to be the same price, and you'll never have to worry about it. It's the most common 22 rifle in america, and not for no reason. But as Julie said, it's not like a .22 is a sniper rifle, and if that's the kind of performance you're expecting you're going to be very disappointed. There also isn't really any loss in accuracy on a rimfire comparing bolt action vs semi auto.

Finally, unloading a 30 round mag of .22 as fast as you can pull the trigger and still keeping everything in the 8 ring because you've got like zero recoil is a hoot. I promise you your savage will be boring about the 50th time you work that bolt, and if I'm shooting next to you with my 597 you are going to be so jelly.

I was kidding...i don't expect to be sniping zombies at 1k yards. I just wanted a rifle that was fun and cheap to target shoot. I guess I will take another look at the 10/22...that 597 is super cheap too

I have one 10/22 that my FIL bought. Some olympic shooting team blah blah blah thing. Whatever. Both my and my wife's 597's were like, 150 dollars and they're awesome.

My official recommendation though is either a .22lr conversion kit or a .22lr upper for your AR. super easy to swap, and you'll enjoy it, AND get better with your AR. Win/win/win.

By super easy, how easy are we talking about here? My only experience taking apart guns is to clean my handguns and I have 0 specialty tools to do so.

If you get a Dedicated conversion kit, (i.e. new upper) like a Spike's Tactical .22lr upper...then you pop out the two pins on your lower, remove your upper, slap on new upper, push two pins back in. Then have fun.

If you get a conversion bolt, you push the rear pin out, remove bolt carrier assembly, put in new .22lr bolt carrier assembly, push rear pin back in.

When I say something is super easy, I mean it. Easier than cleaning the fucking thing.

The gun show was this weekend in Charlotte. I was a kid in a candy store. I went by myself, blacked out and left 5 hours later with a bag full of stuff.

I did not end up buying any guns or a new upper there because I really didn't see what I was looking for. But I left with:

- A pack of glow targets
- A sling (need to get a mid-mounted attachment point, probably will snag the magpul ring)
- A sweet S&W knife +1 for my brother for Christmas:


- Mako mag well grip
- Magpul mid length handguard + rail (wanted a gen2 Mako foregrip+bipod but I couldn't find one in black)
- UTOG sidemount 3x magnifier scope (debating whether I want to keep it or not, got it cheap enough that I thought I would take a gamble on it. I like it, but I can't have it mounted with the magpul rear flip up sight...the three just dont fit on together)




After the foregrip and a butt pad and maybe a paint job of some kind I will be done with it. Should finally have time in the schedule to shoot it this week, I will post up a range report.

Also, if you have the magwell grip why do you need a foregrip? Why do you need a buttpad?

Rex, tell me a little about the Remington 597 vs a 10/22 if you would. I just assumed I should get a 10/22, but I don't know a thing about the 597.

Also, is there a similarly cheap, reliable 22 rifle you can recommend that uses 22 magnum instead? :dunno:

So they're both simple blowback .22lr rifles. I think the 597 with it's dual recoil rod/action spring action is a little simpler, and the 597 is much cheaper. They had some teething issues with the magazines and action springs when first released (they are fairly new) but a new pair of action springs and new magazines solve that issue. The bolt hold on the 597 is also more "conventional"...when the bolt is locked to the rear by the empty magazine, simply insert a new magazine, give the bolt a short tug to the rear and let it fly...no weird button to push as on the 10/22. All 597 barrels are also free floated, as opposed to the 10/22....out of the box, stock for stock, the 597 is more accurate.

Then 10/22 does have a larger aftermarket, but the 597 still has stocks, magazines, springs, etc available for it... you just won't find any Fake-me-out-G36 kits for the 597. If you wanna do crap like that, get a 10/22.

Finally, both the 10/22 and the 597 are available in magnums. They used to be available in .17hmr also, but that cartridge is a bit hot for straight blowback actions, and i think those models have been discontinued.
