The two trees on the left of the picture are the ones that keep me up at night during a storm like this.

Why not cut them down? I know they're trees and trees are great, but I'm not sure it's worth the worry.

Working on it, they're big and expensive to have removed. According to the arborist though, they are healthy (very important) and protected from the direction of prevailing winds. Cut down the trees money just went to cut the dogs cancerous leg off this weekend.

Well, as promised, some pics:



This is one of COUNTLESS near me that are just like that or worse and this was scary for two reasons:

1: This was before the "brunt" of the storm hit. It fell at about 5PM and the storm wasn't supposed to get bad until about 7ish here.
2: I didn't hear that thing fall, wind was too loud.


This was my handiwork to try and save this guy from falling. I originally tried adding stuff to the roots (you can see my brother's recent delivery of Enkei Wheels and tires were used), which did nothing. You can't see it but the roots were lifted up a good half a foot. So i took a hose and wrapped it around the tree and tied to the fence posts in the middle of the storm. Seems to have worked, you could see the tree tighten the hose up when the gusts came through.

Farm tree does not equal residential tree between two houses. Believe me, I'd love to cut it down and just take my time cutting it up.

I have cut down plenty of dead wood further away from the house without a problem and it is kind of fun.

Seriously though, chainsaws are cool and all, but my dad and I once tried to cut a tree down near the house and it fell the wrong way, even with the ropes, and we were lucky it only knocked the satellite dish off the deck. I think I'd let someone elses insurance take care of the tree that accidentally fell into the house if I had the chance.

this is my backyard sitting on my neighbors fence. Came from my tree that's probably about 4-5 stories tall and 3 feet thick sitting right behind my house. and oh yeah I have water in my basement.

It ain't easy that's for sure. We had an enormous dead oak on the edge of our property a while ago. The rednecks that used to live on the other side of the property had once used the thing as a makeshift engine hoist or something. The trunk was at least 40" in diameter. Just slightly wider than our 16" chainsaws could get all the way into.

Our method to cut it down was to 1.) climb the tree and tie two nylon ropes around the upper branches, then we tied the other ends to the front tow eyes on our F-250. 2.) cut a huge wedge in the direction we wanted it to fall. 3.) score all the way around the base with the chain saw until just the few inches in the center were solid. 4.) Turn on F-250, hit boost in reverse. 5.) observe epic carnage.

I wish i had the pictures from it. Our neighbor has one of it still hooked up to the truck before it fell, and there's one of my high school GF and I sitting on the trunk after it was down, a solid 8ft in the air.
