What is your car buying future?
#61
every few weeks i change my mind between about a dozen future cars i want, then the cycle repeats every year. but i know i want my next car to be:
- relatively affordable
- interesting
- exciting to drive
- a little practical?

but not in that particular order. i have my big utility wagon in the form of my wife's xterra, even though it burns more gas than an ocean liner. down the line there is the possibility of future mini-me's, so i'm not sure yet if i could swing a toy...would like to be able to not have to strap a baby(s) to the roof and for it to be able to take an impact without turning into a human food blender. i don't have a commute these days so i'm not really looking for an appliance anymore.

i want an RX8 pretty bad, and always have. awesome chassis and i love the reverse rear doors. but i'm not sure if i can just pretend i don't care that a pair of shoes will outlast the spinning-dorito engine. I could have alot of fun with a swapped "classic" 2.5RS, a Foz XT, or maybe a 05-06 Sti. i have bad thoughts about a V70R wagon with that turbo-5. i still want a late 90's M-coupe but i don't think they'll ever be associated with the word "cheap", but a swapped 318Ti....i'm hopeless i guess. the RS fell in my lap, that's probably how the next one will be.

if things pan out and i don't have too many practicality constraints, i'd love either an S2000 or a rust-free 240Z. i'd keep the Z mostly stock in power but put a nice suspension on it and minilites.

the RS isn't going anywhere for a while. as much as i'd like to try something else because of my ADD, it fits my needs very well right now and its pretty fun to drive.

This has always made it move a little too... minus the racing stripe and in a different color:

My friend has a rx8, they are fun to drive but he had to get a new engine and he only had like 50-60k on the old one, might have been an oil issue cause they eat oil. He also gets terrible gas mileage.

One thing I've wanted for several years is a 1920s or 1930s Ford roadster. Of course there is very little about most of those cars that is 20s or 30s but I've always wanted one. You can pick up people's toys that need a little work for low-mid teens and I think it would be a blast.

right. where most people are replacing timing belts, you're replacing an engine. i don't care about the fact that they consume oil, they're supposed to, or else they couldn't work at all. but i'd prefer a 3000 lb. sports sedan to get better mileage than my truck. they do have an awesome transferrable powertrain warranty (8 year/100000 mile) though. but i wouldn't want to be in ownership of one when that runs out.

An RX8 would be cool if you swapped an LS1 into it.

We had a 500 in Belgium/Netherlands last year. It was a great car in the city. Highway? Not so much.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Actually: Have no idea! This has been changing in the past 2 years. I REALLY REALLY wanted to build a factory five cobra, but my inspiration for building something has been declining dramitically, and I also want something where im not toying with it constantly. I also want something that is "nice", meaning it is not "good for what it is", but just GOOD. I also want something I could do a lap or two on track, or an autox, not at full speed, just some laps to make me happy if the race car was down. If I stick with racing, who knows? NSX, S2000, C5Z, almost anything. I change my mind daily on what I want. If I were to sell the race car, trailer, and truck? Porsche GT3, E93 M3 sedan, c6 z06. Hell Ive also been toying with the idea of an SL55 AMG.

At this point mine's pretty simple. With the needs of a growing family (and parents/inlaws getting older), plus the need for 4 wheel drive and towing ability, I will be selling the Ridgeline and most likely the Mini to get a Suburban or Expedition EL. They do all I need them to, plus it helps "downsize" the current fleet. Of course if I quit racing that what clear up lots of other space (and $$), but at this point it's not something I want to do (still love getting in the car and heading out on track).

find me one that (A) actually runs and is (B) affordable and i'm on it.

PS didn't Hinson suffer some Hennessey-like problems (aka being crooked bastards) from their V8-FD days?

This damn thread has made me decide to go to Mitsu and look at the option of upgrading to an EVO X.

I forgot to mention - I'd probably rock a CLS550 too. I was looking at those a while back, but I'm not sure I could stand how gangster it would make me feel to own one

A blowed up RX8 and a pick-a-part LS1/T56 + Hinson kit shouldn't be extraordinarily stupendously expensive :dunno: There are a number of guys who make boutique wiring harnesses, A/C lines etc for the FD guys so with a bit of similar work reliability I'll assume will be in the same ballpark as the FD. IIRC Hinson makes decent stuff, its not the most baller or well thought out all the time but with some busted knuckles and a lot of cursing you can get their stuff to work if you're on a budget.

Some sort of a late model F150 4x4 and a cherry, low-mileage, bone stock 5-spd 5.0 fox body....maybe a '93 Cobra.

Maybe.
