Lesson Learned:

DO NOT buy guns at auction. The Ruger MK1 sold for $375. A brand new MK2 sells for $255, and I haven't looked but I'm pretty sure an MK3 is still a good bit less than that. Oh well.

I figured this would happen. Despite the fact that the MK1 is older than sin, a not-great design, and is surpassed in spades by its successors; it's old and it's a gun, and people who don't know will think it's worth money. I wouldn't have paid 100 bucks for it.

Picked this up in a recent trade for my 1911. I rarely ever shot the 1911 and I've always wanted an ar15 so when the opportunity presented itself I jumped at it. It's a PK upper with a Rock River lower, red dot scope, foregrip and a few mags. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I can't wait to get it out to the farm and maybe pick off some groundhogs.

I am working on a special range within a few feet of one of my fav locations. No need to worry about the product I bring there (I will be amongst good "company"), not that anyone will hear me shooting anyway........

If I were to tell you I wanted to buy a shotgun for the purposes of skeet/trap/sporting clays and home defense. What would you suggest?

I'd ask you what you were going to use it mostly for.

If you're going to be doing MOSTLY clay games, then buy the best semi auto you can afford, then keep it around for HD. If it's primarily for home defense, then buy a nice Remmy 870 or Mossberg 500. Maybe even Benelli Nova. That's a good pump.

The reality is that home defense and sporting are pretty mutually exclusive. You'll make sacrifices for home defense that will hurt your clay game. And a gun that's good for clays is generally longer, doesn't have rifle sights, and probably won't carry that many shells.

They really DON'T cross over very much. The good news is that a standard "home defense" shotgun is pretty cheap. So buy that, practice operating it at 0Dark30, and then buy another shotgun to play games with.

More and more, though, I'm finding a shotgun ill-suited for the purposes of Home Defense and have been considering some kind of pistol caliber carbine.

This concerns me. If you have to use it often enough to determine it isn't good for Home Defense, I think my first consideration may be moving to a better 'hood Smile .

I don't have to actually use it ON someone to determine it's ill suited to the task.

I tried clearing the house with my 590. I know, you shouldn't clear the house by yourself "in real life" but you don't know what's up until you try.

Anyway, it was practically impossible. With an 18" barrel, even with the collapsible KNOXX stock, it was just too freaking long. I couldn't get around corners without taking the muzzle away from my line of sight, and forget opening a door. My MSAR, on the other hand, made clearing the house a breeze.

I put the shotgun up for sale the next day. Not convinced the MSAR is the "right" answer either, but it's more in the right direction than a shotgun. (IMHO)

Get yourself a cheap Remington 870 Express. Go skeet shooting with the long barrel, when you get home spend 15 minutes cleaning and swapping a few parts and Wha-la instant room-clearing tool (top tool in picture)

45long colt pistol for home defense. .410 shotgun shells in the chamber, keep your line of sight and have a good spread when you shoot....but I just keep my .357 next to the bed.

I see what you are saying about being mutually exclusive. I went shooting with a friend and enjoyed it. I was thinking this could be a fun way to waste money. So you answer your questions. I want a gun for sporting purposes. If I have to use it to to scare off someone who tries to come over without being invited I would prefer to NOT kill the people in the unit next to me.

I like the idea of a longer sporting barrel then switching to something shorter for HD. Is this a real solution?
