The JMU concealed carry group is doing a "empty holster demonstration" on campus to promote their pro-concealed carry on campus views. This coming Thursday. I thought it was a pretty cool idea myself. Anne is wearing my Uncle Mike's Sidekick shoulder holster...she is expecting the ultra liberal Professor she TA's for to freak out.
![]() Does anyone know what the deal is with that at JMU? I know students cannot carry, but wasn't there a law suit a few years ago that made it legal for citizens (non-students) to carry on campus with the proper permit? Basically the university could only ban its own students and punish them inside its own system.

IIRC, concealed carry is only prohibited by law on VCU & (and I think) GMU campuses.
However, students are subject to academic regulations of the colleges. Roanoke Times Article Wrote:David Briggman, a resident of Keezletown in Rockingham County, has made it his personal mission to challenge state colleges' authority to enact tougher gun restrictions than the state. The way this works, I believe, is that carrying a firearm on one of the above campuses is statutorily defined as trespassing. But I am not a lawyer, and I am especially not your lawyer. edit: I was correct about GMU: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+8VAC35-60-20">http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504 ... I was at Walmart yesterday evening to pick up some 9mm range ammo. Their cabinets were completely empty - I inquire as to whether they stopped stocking ammo (I've heard many Walmarts in bigger cities have done this). To my surprise, the clerk told me that over the past two months, ammo is sold out within 4 hours of being stocked on the shelves at all area stores. He told me to call ahead each morning to see what was received the night before and come in first thing... People stocking up or what? Wow...

Record gun sales + perceived hostile political atmosphere = more people buying ammunition in record numbers. More people buying ammo = less ammo available (and higher prices!) AWB2 Still looms: Barack Obama, at a press conference in Mexico Wrote:OBAMA: Well, first of all, we did discuss this extensively in our meetings. I have not backed off at all from my belief that the gun ÔÇö the assault weapons ban made sense. Then there's the CIFTA treaty that's got people's panties in a twist: Clicky-Pow, plus the constant bombardment from the MSM (That's everybody, by the way, I'm not exempting any mouthpiece of the MSM) about guns, "mass killings", and all manner of gun related PSH...people are just worried that they won't be able to get firearms and ammunition in the future, so they're stocking up now. And it really sucks.

What are the purchase requirements for "assault weapons" at VA gun shows? If you're doing a "private sale", is it a simple exchange or what? I am thinking of making a purchase out there, but would stash it in my parent's basement since there's no way I can get it into CA legally.

If you're buying a gun from a federally licensed dealer at a gun show, it's just as if you were buying it in a store. You'll need 2 forms of ID, both with your address, assuming you're buying a rifle... HOWEVER. While there are no federal requirements to this effect, many dealers will not sell to anyone who does not reside in a neighboring state AND this was posted on the Nation's Gun Show website: The Nation's Gun Show Wrote:NON-VA Residents: Must be of legal age to purchase a firearm. Can only purchase long guns (rifles and shotguns) and must have the same forms of ID as VA residents. Driver's License from your State of residence and another ID that proves you live in that State. ALL LAWS OF BOTH STATES MUST BE COMPLIED WITH. You must fill out the paperwork and pass the background check, you can then take your firearm with you. Since practically any assault rifle you find at a gun show in VA is going to be illegal in Cali, you're probably SOL unless you have a VA ID.

Do any specific parts of the firearm need to be registered? Seems a little too easy of a loophole to "exploit"...

That's the one part that the ATF has determined is a "firearm", and you would need to get a background check for in VA. If you really want an AR-15, send me a PM and I'll walk you through the california process. It's pretty easy, instead of a mag release you'll have a "bullet button", I'll explain what that is.

Concerning gun ownership/registration/whatever in California (and other states), I read some interesting news today. The 2nd Amendment as an individual right has become incorporated by the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. It should be at least a start to dismantling Cali's overzealous gun laws.

That is pretty interesting, but it was kind of inevitable. I am glad it happened in California, but I don't think we'll be be seeing a breaking down of California's arbitrary and capricious gun laws any time soon. California does not ban guns, it does not even ban handguns, but merely weapons with certain cosmetic features attached. It has a long-standing legal precedent, and the Second Amendment Heller decision does not protect my right to own a so-called "high capacity ammunition feeding device" or a "collapsible or folding buttstock".
It also doesn't punish California for making an ex-post-facto law regarding "assault weapons" and confiscating law-abiding citizen's personal property.

If anything, California is moving in the opposite direction. It's only a matter of time before some environmentalist implores a study about how lead from the bullets is killing the spotted desert lizard or something, and soon bullets will be banned. This state is full of that silly rhetoric...
