"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I can't believe you'd ever source any "news" from a site like that... but, it is true that prices have deflated on raw materials - then again, it's possible that they were overinflated just before they turned south...

So, another "stimulus" package is being passed as fast as possible. No surprise that a lot of the focus of the bill is growing government, not providing any stimulus at all. Any comments? I, of course, think the bailouts and stimulus have to stop. They want to pass it quickly before the economy starts to turn around so they can take credit for it.
At least the Cato Institute and hundreds of economists agree. But facts and educated opinions are irrelevant, the dems can say and do whatever the hell they want now.

"There is no disagreement that we need action by our government, a recovery plan that will help to jumpstart the economy."
ÔÇö PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA, JANUARY 9 , 2009
With all due respect Mr. President, that is not true.
Notwithstanding reports that all economists are now Keynesians and that we all support a big increase in the burden of government, we do not believe that more government spending is a way to improve economic performance. More government spending by Hoover and Roosevelt did not pull the United States economy out of the Great Depression in the 1930s. More government spending did not solve Japan's "lost decade" in the 1990s. As such, it is a triumph of hope over experience to believe that more government spending will help the U.S. today. To improve the economy, policy makers should focus on reforms that remove impediments to work, saving, investment and production. Lower tax rates and a reduction in the burden of government are the best ways of using fiscal policy to boost growth.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
remember all that "Failed Bush economic policy" talk and mudslinging that won Obama the election?
He must have really meant "Not only am I going to keep the 'stimulus' going, Im going to do more of it!"
hope and change baby!

Quote:"I won."
When President Barack Obama used those words to reply to Republican objections to the massive spending bill working its way through Congress, he did much more than deliver a good laugh line and declare the GOP proposals irrelevant.
Obama also signaled to us all that the campaign talk about bipartisanship and ÔÇ£a new wayÔÇØ was just the clever rhetoric of a highly choreographed campaign....This is a tough Chicago [Machine] pol, not some sort of faith healer

hope and change Anybody who believes he would be different from any other politician is entirely too naive.
None of us believed it... but it's what got him elected.
Yes. It's filthy.
And representative of how much of the population falls into the "lowest common denominator" field intellectually.
And for the record, no half educated economist not being paid to repeat party lines believes that *any* government* spending would solve this.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

not trying to turn this thread (overly) political, but since it has to do with the "stimulus"
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://tinyurl.com/cfh6hy">http://tinyurl.com/cfh6hy</a><!-- m -->
Quote:"WASHINGTON - Buried deep inside the massive spending orgy that Democrats jammed through the House this week lie five words that could drastically undo two decades of welfare reforms.
The very heart of the widely applauded Welfare Reform Act of 1996 is a cap on the amount of federal cash that can be sent to states each year for welfare payments.
But, thanks to the simple phrase slipped into the legislation, the new "stimulus" bill abolishes the limits on the amount of federal money for the so-called Emergency Fund, which ships welfare cash to states."
similar with nationalized healthcare.

the part that's interesting:The administration will also propose long-term compensation restrictions even for companies that don't receive government assistance, the official said.

In a 850 billion bill, there's bound to be a bunch of BS. You can pick out a lot of government waste but you can also find a lot of good. It's not all on the Dems. Republicans might publicly be against it but in the end, money into their district is going to benefit them too so they're not going to really fight it.
Long story short, you guys should check out the planet money podcast. It's really informative and breaks down complex financial tools. To anyone who does end up listening to it for period of time, let me know if you can detect any sort of political bias. I honestly can't but who knows, I could be communist.
