I've always felt this way, and the interviewer/talking head seemed to act like there was something wrong there.

There's a reason "Northern Virginia" is so often referred to separately from the rest of the state, and it's got nothing to do with geography.

It's hilarious that he said "I'm going to let you climb in off this ledge". I think his issue is that she said "real Virginia".

But you're right, and so is she - There's "NoVA" and there's "real Virginia". There's the blue part and the red part. Geographically, that blue part is small. Population wise, that blue part is bigger.

I mean, this part of Virginia has some of the richest history in the goddamn country, and half it's residents historical knowledge ends at "George Washington cut down a cherry tree and then didn't lie about it."

Really I guess it boils down to large cities vs rural areas, but we all know McCain has been pushing this strategy of "Keepin' it rural" by advertising "Real America" as "Not in a City, America".

now i'm not even from virginia - but I can see how "some" people would take offense to that. I feel like i could make some wild assumptions that you are from "real" virginia, and one of those people that hates NOVA and why do I feel that if someone refered to NOVA as "real" virginia you would take offense to that

I mean, saying that NoVA is "Real Virginia" is like saying the New York Metro Area is "Real New York".

We all know that's bullshit, most of New York (state) is nothing like New York City. If I were trying to make a point, I'd definitely say that Everything-but-NYC is "Real New York".

I busted out laughing when the news anchor countered her. To me at least it really came across in a derogatory manner; besides what you and I might think of the NoVA/VA debate, it seemed to me as if she was side-stepping metro-DC residents to covet joe-sixpack biblebeater mcdrunk. Again, lowest common denominator :lol: I'd have so much more respect for McCain's campaign if they just gave people some credit. In truth, and hopefully the way I would expect a campaign to operate, there is no objective reality to a state. Saying part of a state isn't "real" is entirely subjective, and only serves to alienate part of the voter base if used in a campaign. I just have a problem with a campaign that is so blatantly willing to exclude people from their interest based on geographic location and, apparently, the supposed lifestyles and ideas that come with those areas.

Well OK, that was a vast generalization on my part. I didn't mean to imply that living out in the country negates you from having a valid political opinion. I guess my thoughts came about after ColinP verbally pointed out something I had been thinking, that the democratic campaign is more universal in its scope, whereas McCain's, as this woman proved, is willing to sacrifice perhaps key (and populous) areas to force their campaign strategy of appealing to far-right conservatives. I'm not saying one is better, just that one is more narrow in its focus and not how I would hope to run a campaign.

Now, as for myself, I'm not from a rural area, I'm not religious, and I could understand how not being a member of their so-called "real" America could turn me off of their message after instantly becoming a second-rate interest to them. Displaying that attitude certainly, in my opinion, isn't going to net you many votes in urban areas if your geographic area is a slight against their campaign tenants.
