You're right, I am relying on common sense... poor assumption really
As far as riding on the street.... 6,000 lb suv vs. a bicycle has always been too big a concern. Traffic laws or not, it only takes one asshole drinking starbucks/on their cell phone/yelling at their kids/etc to put me in a hospital.
While they're clearly labeled as bicycle trails, I'm all about sharing here, but I just wish everyone felt that way and applied common sense and stopped doing stupid chit. There are large blue signs on the trail that say "stay right, pass left" and "share the trail". Everyone can get along :grouphug:
The small children thing is my biggest peeve (and not just because I hate kids) because you'll routinely have packs of 6-20 cyclists chugging down the trail at 20+ mph. You wouldnt let your kid ride his tricycle around the neighborhood in the middle of the 25mph street, so dont do it on a major bicycle trail.

I'm not suggesting you go out on the public roads because we all know what could happen out there. At least on the trail you're the heavier of the two if you get in an accident with some of these random idiots that don't have any common sense.
When I'm out on the trail, whether it be jogging or blading, I'm constantly checking behind me when there's heavy traffic out there. If there's a large group of bicyclists coming up I'll just get off the trail to make it easier for them.
Again, not saying that you're bitching isn't justified, afterall people are idiots, but you really don't have much of a leg to stand on here because they have just as much right to be an idiot and do what they want on the trail as you do.
I believe the only real law/restriction for the trail is no motorized vehicles.
people shouldnt need laws to not be retards. And not having laws doesnt forfeit the right to bitch at them when they are.

Think maybe that's my first sig quote on this site.
One of the reasons I'm Libertarian is I believe laws shouldn't keep people from being retarded. We need to weed them out by allowing them to hurt themselves.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I'm doing something for sure, because I'm getting faster and a 40 mile ride is easier than 20 mile ride was 2 months ago. I need to stop slacking on going to the gym to lift though.
Start lifting as well. You will begin to see results when you have the cardio, diet adjustment, and weight training done in synchronization.

I ride the WO&D daily at home and I guess from my experience I'd reccomend heading south on WO&D if you want to get a serious ride in. It's much better that way, especially when you get past Vienna when there really aren't any exits or entrances to the trail for a few miles. The closer to the city you get, the more crowded it gets and the more you see families just out for a nice time in the city, especially as the leaves turn and the weather gets nice, I'm sure it's packed there.
Oh and small rant, right next to the potomac is a joke. That trail is WAYYY to narrow, especially at the part where you take that wooden bridge. I'm almost too afraid to pass other cyclists there because I'm not sure how confident they are.
Go at the weirdest time possible, I usually went as early or late as possible to still get my ride in. I never really took rides into the city seriously though, I usually just took my time. I also have a honking bell to warn pedestrians. As lame as it sounds I don't like yelling while listening to my ipod and already sort of out of breath. The horn works great! Good luck, and if you're looking for a riding buddy I'd love to go out with ya when I'm home next.

Yeah... leaving from herndon (parking lots at mile 20 and 24) is really the best, but... I have to drive to work if I want to do that since I cant keep my bike here Usually I ride the motorcycle to work.
Maybe when daylight savings time hits and I start leaving at 3pm to go ride, my work will figure something out to keep the bike here. Or they'll just fire me
I have tried the early morning thing and I'm just dead in the mornings.

Its that time a year again. I've been back out off and on (weather pending) for 2 months now... and now that the weather's warmed up, nothings changed, if not gotten worse on the trail. Today's best was the 4 people with 2 or 3 dogs that decided to stop in the middle of the trail (blocking both lanes) and let their dogs do the butt sniffing dance on relaxed leashes. I went by the group at 20mph in the gravel, hilarity ensued for me.
I guess I cant expect anything less.

Don't you ever sit back and go "you know, this isn't worth getting upset over"?

nothing pisses me off when a group of women who are clearly out for their one and only "workout" of the year are rolling 4-wide and don't make any sort of move for you. i usually brush shoulders with them and say "thanks." when running...
on the road bike... i simple don't like riding it so i don't have any input. that shit is dangerous... which is why i mountain bike (or pretend to). had a blast yesterday at wakefield... 0 run-ins with idiots

I could see myself riding a stationary bike inside with a plasma TV in front of me... other types of outdoors bike riding have never appealed to me. I think I got jaded by all of the faggots who tore through campus at UC Boulder and darted through traffic on the highway.
