If you're going to use it as a media center, I have one with a busted optical drive.

XBOX Media Center. Freking badass. Plays all the old school games from NES, SNES, etc. I put a bigger HD in mine as well. You'll need to buy a mod chip, I have an Xcuter, then you'll have to dl the XBMC boot dicc off the bit torrent as it is technically illegal.

What does a media center do for you that a TV, DVD player and Tivo doesnt do for you already?

It can also consolidate your media player needs (music, video files, etc) and still play the games it was intended for.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

I can play just about any console game I want on the XBMC w/o getting up off the sofa. I can play any movie I want either directly from the harddrive in the XBox or over the network, without getting off the sofa. I can also search youtube videos if I want. With the XBox you can't really watch live TV. There are people working on external tuners but they are not looking so hot. What I do is record TV via SageTV on my HTPC then I play the recordings off the XBox, so it's a few minutes behind live, but its cheaper than having a DVR or full fledge HTPC in every room.

Can a person live w/o an XBMC? Sure, but it's a cheap way to get a HTPC in another room. I already had the xbox sitting around doing nothing, so it was a $30 mod chip and $.01 CDRom away from becoming a XBMC. I'm thinking about picking up a few more for the other rooms.

stream content off of your pc, play webradio through your stereo (not sure if xbox does this).

a full media center pc will also do Tivo which i dont think xbox does, but no real reason why it couldnt if you replaced the hard drive

and a < $50 used xbox is a lot cheaper than a pile of consumer electronics

but if a set top box with a brand name makes you feel better, DLink, Buffalo, Linksys, and others make units that do all of this, usually with full HD capability and built in wireless for around $100-$200

It doesnt make me feel better, but since I play almost zero video games, no PC games, and watch a few hrs of TV a week at most... I tend to go for the [Image: easy_button.jpg]

this is the exact reason why I have so many technogadgetwizidary hooked to TV's. The little TV time I DO have I want it to count, I hate sitting there watching commercials or just crap. So I record a shit pile of stuff and watch it when I'm damn well ready, where I damn well want to, hence the multiple PC's hooked to TV's. I'm not tied to a specific location for my TV viewing.

Eehh, make me an offer. One I'm going to do exactly what you intend with, and the other is just a spare.

Since I got the 360, I don't play games on it no more.

and then there is slingbox, a bit of a different beast because its streaming in the other direction, but holy crap is it cool.

a coworker was showing it to me and he was watching his Dad's TV in philly, realtime in HD, changing the channels and everything.

evan, you are going to have to replace the optical drive to get a loader to work, all the hacked bioses load off the CDROM. There are tutorials out there on how to replace the cdrom, it's a bit involved though since it's not a standard connector.

SageTV has a net client that you can watch all your recorded programs on a computer anywhere that has internet access. Pretty slick.

I should also note that the optical drive is not totally broken, it's just flakey. Works when it feels like it.

You can mod the xbox with a software hack now. You do not need the mod chip.
