There is one federal gun law that is being ignored. The second amendment Smile especially the "shall not be infringed" part.

in general this is a states rights issue. i just think VA went the wrong way and is going to feel the "states rights" wrath.

and by bitching on facebook, i mean spreading it to people who might want to contact the VA AG to tell him he is an idiot.

I agree somewhat. The constitution gives the "right to bear arms" - it doesn't specify anything about concealed carrying so it's hard to say what is being infringed on.

Just trying to play devil's advocate. I don't really see the benefits of VA doing this, but the only real negative is that your VA conceal permit (if you even have one) may no longer be valid in another state at some time in the future. Lot of '"ifs" there and it doesn't seem like the state of VA really gives a shit if you can't carry your gun elsewhere so no real negatives for the state.

The big pistol was carried on the horses saddle in the 1700s... i wonder where they put the small one!??!!

the dress, behavior, and weapons of the time indicate "with the common sense approach" they were concealing pistols back in the 1700s when the constitution was written.

Good luck with your assuming and "common sense approach" argument. Can I also assume that when the founders wrote "the right to bear arms" they meant I could own a ground to air missile? They didn't say I couldn't!

I saw NC was one of the states, so am I reading it right in that I won't be able to concealed carry when I visit family in VA? Sorry but this is a BS law to pander to scared, liberal voters, plain and simple. NC has a pretty rigorous concealed carry process, you have a 8 hour class + graded written & firearms target and proficiency tests. Then you have to drive to the main sheriff's office and get finger printed and background checked, and then drive back once you are approved and submit your signed documentation from your class by a certified instructor in order to pick up the permit. What is VA's process like? I can't see what else you need to do than what our state is doing to ensure I am a law-abiding citizen who can legally CC a firearm.

Right then, so with that your legislators are telling me that NC's laws are more lax than VA's and my permit should not be valid there? I'm probably reading this wrong so please tell me if I am, but that is chock full of garbage. You all voted or allowed those people to get voted into office, have fun dealing with that.

actually... the National Firearms Act of 1934 happens to outlaw/regulate items that were commonly used by the founding fathers to establish the United States and common sense says they intended to keep around to keep protecting the United States.

short barreled shotguns, shoulder fired pistols (short barreled rifles), grenades (they have been around since the pyramids!), bombs, explosive missiles, and poison gas weapons were all used during the 1700s and the founding of this nation. SO... should i be allowed to own a ground to air missile? sure, if i could afford it!

so NCs laws are more lax. NC isnt banning VA (yet). VA is saying no NC permit holders in VA. What will happen is NC will eventually say no VA permit holders are allowed in NC. the VA AG is ripping up reciprocity agreements with other states, they havent started ripping them up on their end... yet.

its going to be a state vs. state fight. not all the states will rip them up, but some or most will. it would be a HUGE setback to nationalizing the conceal permit. currently with VA and UT permits you get over 30 states covered... this is going to disrupt that. they dont actually care about the rare instance that someone moves out of state and gets a permit or that NC doesnt require range time or 1 more hour of training (the actual issues with each state have not been identified)... they want to break up the ability to conceal a weapon within the boarders of the US

Right but how are our laws more lax? From what Justin is saying they are more strict.

If you don't have a CC permit, you have to file for Permits to Purchase directly from the Sheriff's office and go through a similar process (minus the range time and class time) in order to buy a firearm at all. And you can only buy 3 of those at a time.

I always hated living in VA and this just fuels my happiness for having left almost 10 years ago

so VA is probably saying (since they havent actually said why for each state), that "well you just take a 15 question test and there is no real classroom time so we wont accept it." VA is setting some standard that other states "arent meeting" (probably to the letter of whatever "law") so they are going to cancel the agreements. "lax" is how you define it.

VA doesnt have my fingerprints but they made me sit through a class. UT has my fingerprints AND made me sit through a class. if you think like our lovely AG, UT will say that VA has lax conceal laws and they should ban VA permits in their state.

trigger warning:

The vast majority of artillery used in the revolutionary war was privately owned. Artillery. ie : big fucking canons ie the biggest most devastating weapon available at the time.
The founding fathers made it very very clear that not only should the people have access to the same weapons as the government , that the necessary accountability of the government to the people depended on it.

For example, NC allows someone who has a protective order against them to get a concealed carry permit. NC also allows people who were convicted of a misdemeanor with a greater than 2 year sentence to get a concealed carry. Really it amounts to selectively looking at other states' concealed carry laws and deeming them more 'lax'. But as you said, other parts of NC's concealed carry law are more strict. Just more misguided cherry-picking.

funny how the logic doesnt hold up.

Straw man argument is straw man-ish.

Yeah not really seeing how that furthers your argument at all. Definitely falls into the straw man category. Same-sex marriage has been determined legal by the Supreme Court (federal govt) while gun laws are handled by the state.
