The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread!
I don't really care about remote adjustment or remote temp because our smart thermostat came with a remote sensor. I like the interchangeable lenses 'cause it'll move around as we rework our house to accomodate a growing family. Our bedroom is on a different floor from the nursery, so I see video and two-way as nice to have. I like that it's USB, so it can be charged almost anywhere. It's probably overkill, but it's going on the registry. If no one buys it, then we'll look at cheaper versions.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Will be nice for as much as I travel and use my cell phone, or when we are hiking as an emergency backup. For the price I figured that was pretty solid. They make an even bigger one with QC2.0 and USB-C, but my phone doesn't accept that and I was trying to be mindful of size and weight since I usually try to travel as light as possible (and have a bunch of other tech I have to take with me)
So for the price, this little thing is pretty freaking gangster. Perfect size and weight for travel, definitely was a good call on this model, seems really well built and came with a full charge. The QC 2.0 works extremely well, in fact it makes me think there might be something wrong with the quick charger my phone came with out of the box. I charged my phone last night from 15% to 100% in less time than it took to watch an episode of ST: Enterprise. I've been trying to drain the battery down to 0% so I can give it a first full charge but I've already charged my phone probably 3 full times and it's got plenty left in the tank.

A+ would recommend if you need something for travel / hiking to charge all of your devices. The option for QC 2.0 or "smart" charging to charge anything you have properly is pretty nice. Also came with a 2 year warranty I believe with another 12 months added on for registering.

Got my "approval" email from Samsung for the free Gear S2, but they added a footnote that due to high demand (obviously, you're giving away a $300 smart watch) delivery times were going to push into May and potentially "Summer 2016". Okay, good things come to those who wait...so hopefully this thing is actually good. But for the price I mean I am not going to complain.

Well got my free gear s2. Started to set everything up and the samsung gear plugin keeps "stopping" I don't think it's actually stopping but a notification pops up on the screen every 5 seconds saying it has stopped making the phone completely unusable until you force stop the app and disconnect the watch. So I guess I have a heavy fancy watch with no connectivity for now. Until they release another update for the plugin.

Anyone tried a generic Android GSM phone?
I like the form factor of my NEC Terrain but it's stuck on 4.0 with plenty of bloatware and when I search for updating to 5.0+, I don't see much support or success. I don't want to spend all day just bricking the damn thing.
Still wanting to not spend much, anyone had luck with $60 crap like this? I mean 811 mostly good reviews, how bad can it be?

Doesn't... really... apply to phones. If you get two, maybe three years out of one before dropping it too many times, then it's still out of date or cannot keep up with the latest OS/software, and gets added to the pile. And it's not like all these phones aren't made in the same place and mostly out of the same hardware anyway. If I cannot get what I want, an up-to-date phone with buttons, and maybe this is the Blackberry Priv or Passport for 6x the price?, well then I'll take cheap.

well ok.

but go buy a 40 dollar android tablet and run it next to a galaxy tab.

Also, is android a requirement? The Lumia phones...are a thing that exists.

Anything you are using / holding almost constantly during every waking hour of the day should not be cheaped out on imo, even if they can be dropped and broken. Same is true for mattresses and shoes. Life is too short to be constantly dealing with an aggravating piece of shit

Not really. I would be concerned about restricting myself to a non-popular OS though.

You know, I am only half kidding. IF there was a smartphone that wasn't an aggravating piece of shit I would be with you. But I haven't used one yet. iOS sucks. Android sucks. Neither makes for a good phone.

Just got an email saying my Samsung gift is on its way and a tracking number. Didn't actually track it but I may be getting a second one somehow lol. Guess I'll have two paperweights until the app is fixed if they do send another one.

I'd love to be able to come here and say try a windows phone. I've had mine for 3 years and it is pretty much awesome. Nokia built an awesome phone with great battery life, great camera, and is still fast. The problem is, Microsoft bought them, and there hasn't been a high end Winphone out since I bought mine. If they end up making a new one within the next few months i'll stay with it, otherwise, it'll be time to shop around.

That being said, the "mid-range" nokias are probably good phones, and I think the OS is the best out right now. It doesnt have every app, but it has a lot of them. Some third party knock-offs are better than official (Windows metrotube > youtube app by far)

Me too! But I think they're like, 3% of the market share? I guess I should give it a look, I just always had pretty low expectations with those and compatibility issues are something I'm already tired of.
