Karting @ GFORCE New Date - March 16th CONFIRMED
rherold9 Wrote:It isn't that current students don't want to come out it is the lack of people actually knowing/timing of events isn't always great. Not saying that we don't try our best to let each other know it is that some of the newer members or "shy'er" members don't know about the events and/or don't people or alumni from MM. Not to mention that I'm a freshman and I'd love to come to these events but monies and me trying to balance time to make it to these events is hard.

I think we need more social meets with alumni and current students to get to know each other more. Perhaps making a list of who attends what events and see the trends of people who aren't attending the events but are in the club maybe try to talk to them and get them to come out. I know for a fact some of the other freshman have no idea what's going on in the club, part of it is us getting adjusted to college life other I have no idea.

Just my little input,

Ryan

Thanks for the input! Are you receiving the e-mails? Do you see the Facebook updates/ posts? We try pretty hard to communicate very often!
Agreed on the social events- we threw a party but no one really showed- we've thrown MM lunches 7-10 days out, no one showed.
When we come back from break we are planning to have a Top Gear night- we will be posting this later on this week and throughout break- getting feedback from you guys to see what day/ night would work- if after that I only see a handful show...well then I guess we have to try harder.

But in all honesty- do you receive the e-mails and facebook posts/ messages- we send an average of 3-5 or more generally for each event- and i'm not talking about total.....I mean within the final 72 hours before an event.

Have you also seen the mass e-mail including the schedule of events planned and date set that was sent out at the beginning of the semester? If not- i will shoot to you asap!
Sold- 02 Wrangler TJ- 3 in. Tera/skyjacker lift, 32in. Pro Comp MT's, RC Swaybar Disco's, RC HD adj. track arm, borla exhaust, airaid intake
Then- 2010 Grand Cherokee Laredo- with the brutally fast mini van motor
......totaled
Now- 2012 VW Passat SE- Manual - 5 banger

I get the club emails, and I check the facebook page almost daily. I'm starting to check the forum more and more. I recognize and appreciate all of the work the current officers are doing to get the club out to events and involved with alumni. The low participation is not reflective of their dedication. You guys are awesome.

Karting is something I really want to do, but I've already registered for the test and tune autocross in Verona that day. I've done a lot of stuff to the HHR this winter and I need every second I can get to figure out how its going to handle with more power, better brakes, new tires, and a rear sway bar. I've heard it said that MM "isn't focused on autocross, but some of our members participate". I'd love to get on track with my own car, but the HHR isn't for that, and I knew it when I bought it. GM screwed me over and my savings got eaten up pretty quick when I basically started college over. I traded my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue when I bought the HHR and those are the only 2 vehicles I've owned. I wanted a sportier car, but I felt the HHR was more practical for my wife and I. I compromised and got something fun, fast, big enough to haul stuff, and something I worked on during my time at GM. Autocross seems like a good place for me to start to get into motorsports - it's a way for ME to get seat time doing what this club is about - driving. Karting does that too, but that's a one-time event. I recognize it's probably more seat time considering 10 days of 3 70-second runs (for a total of maybe 30 minutes PER SEASON), but I've already committed a bunch of money to upgrades for autocross. In short, I'm not karting because of a date conflict. That said, I thought it was really odd the club did so much to promote the college invitational last semester, and then scheduled karting for the opening day of autocross this semester.

I didn't manage my time appropriately before we went to the track last weekend and I, too, almost backed out at the last minute, but I knew I would look back and regret not going. The weather was awful, but that's okay - I had a blast. As stated earlier in this thread the alumni are super awesome. However, I'm not that crazy about some of the current members. I'm torn between trying to network with alumni, and not wanting to attend activities with people I'm uncomfortable with. I don't want to go into more detail about this here on the forum. In short, as I've come to know the MM members, some seem to have a set of priorities that I feel lead toward dangerous or inconsiderate situations. That said, these "sets of priorities" (can't come up with a better term) are what create the "Yeah, I barely got that felony evading charge dropped back in 2004 when..." stories. Please note: nothing bad has happened! It's simply the vibe a few people put off and I personally don't like it. Maybe I'm just being a whiny bitch, but I'm going to put it out there.

In regards to drinking, I haven't and won't. I'm comfortable with that stance and will take any criticism, chastising, or whatever else comes my way as a result. In short, the medicine I take for a heart condition is amplified by alcohol. To boot, my family has had a lot of problems related to alcohol. A cousin shot himself in the face in front of his girlfriend this past January. I'm not him, I'm more responsible, etc. etc., but I'm going to abstain from drinking. Alumni and members want to? Cool - you have the right to lawfully do so. My personal choice on the topic shouldn't impact your choices and I try to keep my opinion to myself. Honestly, hanging out at the Tavern at VIR was really cool. Drunk folks aren't my cup of tea, but it was fun to listen to stories and such.

Thanks for your feedback Brad! I certainly respect your situation, and I hope you don't beleive we are trying to "force" you to drink. It has just been college mentality for a long time that booze helps loosen people up to talking and getting to know each other.

We have 2 social events coming up in the next 3 weeks, skiing and G-Force karting. Lets do a cookout at G-force/Justins if he is still up for it and stick around. I will try to be friendly I promise!

If I felt forced, I would leave. Made that decision a long time ago. I don't feel forced, hence me sticking around. I just wanted to put it out there. DJ, you're freaking awesome. I wish I had the money and time to track a car like you do, and maybe one day I will. Everyone speaks so highly of your driving skills I know I need to hang around you more to [hopefully] pick some up!

ispoonwithmugen Wrote:You think I'm a felon to be

I don't think anyone is exactly a "felon to be", just that some folks don't seem to recognize their actions impact others. It's either a rude/obnoxious comment to a new member (from an officer no less!), or doing something dumb on the street when we're traveling as a group. The latter could potentially lead to "felon" status, but that's not what I was trying to focus on.

not to come off as rude, but if you end up cutting it to an hour, the drive to richmond isnt really worth it anymore. Just sayin...

Btw, you get the same amount of track time regardless so...just to be clear, the only thing you're losing is the hour of watching your teammates drive around and Goodspeeds rage comics on whiteboards but I'm sure he can do those in an hour but I don't recall seeing his name on the list Cry

If it makes you feel better Brad. I don't drink either. But mostly its because of this little person I'm growing. But I don't expect anyone to drink that's not willing or anything. It just used to be a thing, and now its not. I'm not going Karting for obvious reasons, but maybe I can talk Rex into coming over for some cookout goodness at the Gallamores. We might get Rex to make some of his famous chili. Also, Justin, that means we can probably help Casey with set up and stuff.

Yes, I'm getting the emails and see the Facebook posts. I have no idea about others, they may just not read them or ignore them. I'd love to go carting but I have no idea if I can. I'll know more after break if I can or not. Hopefully I can if so I'll have to take the offer up with the "sponsor" spot or whatever that is would be greatly appreciated.
