One problem could be karting takes months to fill with a set date. The date wasn't really set in January. Its kind of seems like a proactive issue as I've discussed with Jon.

not to come off as rude, but if you end up cutting it to an hour, the drive to richmond isnt really worth it anymore. Just sayin...

Ok ok. I'll be that guy.

Personally, driving 2 hours to drive 2 hours to drive 2 hours is not exciting to me. Karting is fun, but it needs to be closer to home. Summit maybe?

This event costs A LOT, past officers know this. We end up losing money even if spots are filled. Yes we could try and plan months in advance, but lets get realistic. We are college students, planning isn't our best skill all of the time.

We tried to put on this event for you guys. Only a handful of alum have paid and even less students. No matter how much we push it, it doesn't seem to matter.

I think that Gforce should be removed from the list of "must do" activities for MM. If people want to kart, let them organize a trip on a whim. MM cannot be the checkbook for events like this, lack of participation is evident. Two dates have been planned with the first being canceled. Everyone knew there would be a new date, yet where is the participation?

There are other threads about karting at various places. That's the approach we need to take. Oh someone organized a karting event that you can't make? Organize one for another date then.

Btw, flame suit on.

How many event threads have there been with the mention of free food and booze? Should I ask Julie to come lay the smack down again? I sent an email to current students last night. Any of them post in this thread or paypal? Are any of them even on the forum? No and we are out of ideas on how to coerce them to join the forum where they would see this type of thread and become interested.

i cannot make it, but will sponsor a spot for a current student. anyone interested in said free spot needs to reply here and quote this. i'll figure out some sort of drawing to choose a winner. i implore other alumni to do the same. we can turn this event into a bonding thing and entice a lot more folks to come methinks.

Nor did I.

See, here's the thing. You can't use the "we're college students, planning isn't our forte" schtick.

I was a college student. And for two years in a row, my officers and I picked every date for the semester's events (at the start of the semester) and that was the date. Take it or leave it. Alumni with Big Boy (and Girl) Jobs like to know these dates far in advance. Late August and early January, everything gets set, boom, done.

This isn't hard, guys. You've had great turnouts for other events. I don't know why GForce is slipping through the cracks. The whole "drive two hours" thing always worked for me, because as a student, I knew that Justin would open his home up for a rockin' after-party (which he seems still willing to do) and we'd be out of town all friggin day.

I'm not even good at karting. I just want to go and socialize and punt someone into a wall.

Honestly, I am just not sure if "car stuff" and "free booze" seem to attract the current student population.

We had free beer/food and had plenty of current students come out for the Turducken Party. 95% of the current students left without having a beer, and wayyyy before the festivities really got started. Excuses were abundant, but I guess the real question is why didnt they make an excuse to stay? A decent amount of alumni came out, and we even had 39 year olds doing keg stands and playing beer pong. Maybe that is just not interesting to college students anymore.

I'm with DJ on this. We've opened our house and floor space multiple times to the current student population, and they don't want the free booze. They come, they eat, they leave. Put on Repeat. I don't get it myself, as I was always up for free beer. But lets be honest. Perhaps its because we are all older. Nobody wants to hang with the Alumni any more. Even if they have the money to buy food, and booze, and pay for karting slots. I just suppose we've gotten too old. I mean, kids came to the track 2 weekends ago, and other than Brad, Dan, and Kardashian, the other kids basically acted like scared little kids. Drinking, and shenanigans at the track are what this club was built on, I just don't get it.

Yeah, no, it's not that your efforts are going un-noticed in the least. You got a ton of people (relatively speaking) down to the track... but we were all kinda miffed that they were there, heads buried in their iPhones, not really wanting to just hang out and have a beer or three and listen to Unca Rex tell the story of how he got nine tickets in one day. That was like the easiest hook for me freshman year.

Outsider looking in opinion here, but I thought the guys/and GF of one of the members that showed up at the track (sorry I suck at names, I remember Dan) were pretty socialable during their stay there. Hell they even helped me push-start my hooptie around the paddock, and I think most of them showed up to the VIR Tavern after the NASA/DJ's trailer party.

And regarding the earlier comment about students coming up to hang out and then leaving, I'm not sure how JMU is anymore but I'd be more inclined to make it back to JMU for night time shennigans.

Finally break between classes so I can comment here:

Yes, some of our members don't like to drink.....i'll be honest MM right now isn't a big drinking club AND not for nothing guys.......numerous clubs around campus (including the joke of a org. called student ambassadors) currently have a shit ton of hazing charges on them for drinking..... i'll play dad here but I know a couple of new members who would feel uncomfortable if I shoved a keg in front of them and said "drink." We had one member who was too far much a crazy drinker and disrespected more than a handful of people in the club- those of you who know what I'm talking about you have no reason not to agree that we did the right thing.

Planning/ timing- I think we've done a pretty good job so far of planning (this semester) and last (recall the summer meetings?) and making the effort to lay down events ahead of time- aka remember the longgg e-mail with the 5 or 6 major events we've had on lock down (date - wise, time etc.) that I released the first week of Jan? Since then I recall shooting that e-mail out at least 3 or 4 times to students and alumn- the calendar also has had all the dates since the first week of the semester as well.

It's great for me to hear how easy it was for you all to fill the 40 spots.....thats great, bravo. BUT the club, as I said before, is different- the group of members aren't drinkers or partiers and we've had trouble getting them out to ultimately two a couple events so far- VIR last weekend- yea we had nearly 50% back out....why? Hmm maybe the shitty weather.....there choice...I can't change that when they back out that day or less than 24 hours before. Lastly- $ is a big point for our members and a soft spot- $30 to a student to go karting I suppose is a decent amount to spend. I think its great that the alumn are throwing up opportunities to sponsor a student- well done, I can't tell you how much I appreciate that!

Julie- we <3 the alumni and I know the new members have enjoyed meeting you all- trust me, they're more than appreciative. DJ- apologies for offending the alumni- some of us had work the next day or other things to do on that Sunday- we also carpooled so those who drove had to be back later that night- regardless we showed and had a great time! Again, this isn't a frat or a drinking club- you guys always say it- its a driving club.

Taking a step back- what was the club like last year- anyone recall how many "active" members or "active" planned out events that went as well as this year actually occured? Not trying to look back here but instead make a point- the club is completely, almost 90% full of new, bold/underline NEW members. We are still becoming close friends and such.

Moving on- we have the snowboard/ ski trip- something I worked for and am excited about before spring break- when we come back we have already determined to have a Top Gear night for a club social event- beer/ party didn't really turn out great- OK, club isn't into the party scene...no problem, lets just all hang out and watch TG as friends.

Phew- back to karting- I'm agreeing with Jon on this one- we agree on similar thoughts.

OK- karting is set.. it will most likely fill up- after that is the car show and cruises and TG nights in between...... NOT going to blow this thread up any more and get crruazy off one event.

We've done great this year (in my mind) and we are working hard towards fixing the small things we as a club need to do before years end.

The club is new/ different this year, the members aren't like some of us who wish to gargoyle a keg.
We're trying our best.
I can't force people to drink- we're a driving club- measure the club this year in the growth in members/ events and actually having a club....not by how late we stayed at your house or how much we drank.
The new members (the entire club pretty much) love what we are doing- most I think are shy to spend the $30 bucks.

This thread is for karting. Period. Any more comments/ constructive criticism- call me 201 264 7095 or pm me. Nuff said.

Excuse my lack of grammar/ mispellings, I have 4 tests, a final and a business plan due this week- forgive me if i don't have two minutes to spell check. LOL

I sent out invitations to friends at VCU/ other JMU students. The absolute only reason the VIR failed for me was work. I'm slacking on paying for this karting event but I'm coming. I have no problem drinking a little bit (even with my concussion, stupidly). Speaking from a "current member" state, I love hanging out with the Alum. Jake, DJ, Rex (and Julie and Diesel and Bailey) are all cool ass people and I've met so many others that I can't remember on hand. A lot of the time I actually can't stick around because of work in the am or some other lame excuse but I still come out to the events and hang out for some hours.

It isn't that current students don't want to come out it is the lack of people actually knowing/timing of events isn't always great. Not saying that we don't try our best to let each other know it is that some of the newer members or "shy'er" members don't know about the events and/or don't people or alumni from MM. Not to mention that I'm a freshman and I'd love to come to these events but monies and me trying to balance time to make it to these events is hard.

I think we need more social meets with alumni and current students to get to know each other more. Perhaps making a list of who attends what events and see the trends of people who aren't attending the events but are in the club maybe try to talk to them and get them to come out. I know for a fact some of the other freshman have no idea what's going on in the club, part of it is us getting adjusted to college life other I have no idea.

Just my little input,

Ryan
