Evan Wrote:RawrImAMonster Wrote:The method the security guy at work was telling me about was saying once it gets to a certain point you'll start getting the password in bigger chunks. He said you can get any WPA2 password in under 24 hours.
So don't trust that completely. Im not too interested in networking and even less in network security, but when I read on it earlier this year, the 'hack' was that the handshake packets could be downloaded and the password could be brute forced offline, back home with somebody's big GPGPU machine. But its still brute force, so a long complex randomized password is still much harder (longer) to crack. (to the order of years, not hours)
perhaps he was talking about original WPA, which is much faster to crack.
oh, and turn off WPS, that shit is as bad as WEP.
With the method he was talking about, you had to have a device in range of the wifi listening all the time. It was an actual crack, not just brute forcing it.
I don't actually know anything about how that one works. I'm just basing that off what he told me. He's pretty well trained security-wise so I guess he probably knows what he's talking about :dunno:

Well if thats the case and its easily reproducible in the field by script kiddie idiots, then yeah its kind of a big deal, since there are no better alternatives for wifi security.
Hopefully its just one of those 'in the lab' kind of exploits.
edit: just spent more time than I should have looking for this, and I havent found any WPA2 exploits that dont involve brute force. A few articles with dramatic headlines from journos but in the end its still brute force so :dunno: Id like to think that an exploit of that scale would be easy to find info on :dunno: so Im personally not quite ready to declare WPA2 insecure :dunno: :dunno:
Well i didnt make it that long. Maybe I'll change it at some point. The only thing is, I set it to not broadcast ssid and it's still broadcasting. I go back and check the settings but it says it's not doing it. Any suggestions?

From what I understand that doesn't make it any harder to find for people with malicious intent.

Ok so a few hours into this new modem and my speed is fucking awful. Like its noticeably bad. Takes longer for everything. At least on wireless. Don't really mess with wired cause I only use my phone and tablet. Any suggestions? Is this new box simply to throttle my speed? I notice comcast sells packages by speed and I'm not sure which one we have. Could the old box have not had the throttling capability or something and thats why we had to upgrade?

Throttling is not done at that point in the process.
I would check what channel your using, it could be on a channel that is very congested. Download an app like WiFi Analyzer and it will show you what channel you're on and how much noise there is from other broadcasts. It may make sense to move from a 1,6,11 channel and move to say, a channel 4.
If you have no idea just screenshot it and put it up on here. I think someone has done that before.

the ping is super slow, but 14 down and 6 up is plenty fast.

It sure as hell doesn't seem fast. It takes like 30 seconds to open a Web page. I've been switching to 4G just to do stuff on my phone and tablet. Kinda defeats paying for home Internet.

Downloaded a channel analyzer. Im on channel one and it looks to be one of the best in my area. The app has a suggestion page that suggest a better channel and the only one it suggests is 14 and my modem thing only lets me go to 11. There is only one other person on channel one and it keeps disappearing/sitting right on top of my signal band so idk what that means. Is one of the few bands that doesnt have a router name tied to it either. Could it be another device in my house?
Any suggestions on how to get my speed back or what i can do. Its definitely slower than it used to be. I may try the old router ran through the new modem to ser if it helps.

Keep in mind that if you do that you will have to shut off the wireless on the Comcast device so that they don't interfere.
EDIT: Oh, and turn off DHCP on the old one you're connecting.
