With all due respect, I think we're jumping the gun a little bit. My previous questions were never answered, and I have a few more...

Will we lose our join dates/post counts/post history/search database by moving to GoDaddy?

Will we have awful banner ads all over the place at another hosting site?

I need someone who was then and there back when this site was created to answer these and other questions. One-fiddy at go-daddy is sweet and all but our site is our most valuable resource and I don't want to bone it up by hastily switching around our setup.

Beyond all that, I really don't know what to do/how to approach such a situation. Could someone who knows more about the internets, hosting, and our site in particular post in here?

1. No, it's just data. We move the data and it's as if nothing ever happened. We could move the site somewhere else and you'd never even know it.

2. No, hosting is hosting. GoDaddy isn't Geocities. They're not doing us any favors, we're just choosing to use them for our hosting. Site would look exactly the same, but with less slow suck.

No - the whole forum database will be moved. Unless I am forgetting something, its mySQL, which is supported by godaddy. It will look the same there as it does here on nexpoint.

No, thats why we're paying for the hosting. We can do whatever we want with it, no ads that we dont put on there.

Also, another good host is lunarpages. I registered a domain with godaddy earlier this week and i've gotten a few phone calls (!) and emails trying to "help me out" with additional services. Does anyone else have any experience with them?

Thanks for the post Mike. So as Adam pointed out, we have some sort of deal with Nexpoint until the 17th of March. In the meantime, perhaps we could contact them and see what our options are by staying with them. Is there any interest in simply staying with them, but paying for hosting to get better service?

I am on ipower.com and have no complaints.

The deal with Nexpoint is they give us free hosting and I think every 2-3 years we have to renew our domain. I think that's all that is due right now. How we do that I do not know... Likely has to be done through them.

I would have no complaints with staying with them. The problem isn't that we are on some bad hosting plan, but that there is something up with the server. Likely another user of it has hosed something up and tech support needs to take a look. Jack has been the contact for all of this in the past. I'll ping him on it.

I have GoDaddy for my website and it has the shitty banner ads, but it's b/c I'm using the free hosting. If I paid for it or used a different hose, they'd dissappear.

It's been a while, but I don't recall getting any phone calls from GoDaddy. I get emails about all sorts of special offers from them, but I just delete those...

Here are my thoughts (without reading the entire thread because internet is hellaspensive out here on this deserted island):

1. GoDaddy would definitely not be my first pick. It's like hosting your stuff with the walmart of the internet. Service isn't first rate and you're lumped in on some slow ass shared server with hundreds of other customers.

2. To determine where we host, we really need a budget. Let's not cheap out on this. Remember, we want to upgrade, not downgrade.

3. No data will be lost (in theory). The database is too big to fit on a cd. IIRC, think DVD size. The site will have to go down for some time. I would be more than willing to do this when I get back stateside (end of march).

4. Just because Nexpoint is renewing our domain doesn't mean we're stuck with them after the domain renewal. I've bought several domains with godaddy because they're cheap, but don't host them anywhere near that piece.

5. I don't even have the credentials for any of our admin stuff with me in thailand. I *may* have it in email. *maybe* Adam definitely has it all.

If you are seeing this error, mailing from the server has not been properly configured. The error will be displayed anytime that an email would be sent (right after registration, after posting, after sending a PM, etc.).

Fixing the problem

If you are using a hosting company, then the first order of business is to contact them. The majority of hosts do support mailing from the server, so simply reporting the error may solve the problem. If they have purposely disabled the mail function, ask if they have a local SMTP server you can use and what authentication information it requires (they may provide you with a username/password).
