MM Spring Car Show 2015 - Planning Thread

Well we had decided on just doing the show the 12th, but still nothing is in stone yet, so I can try to talk to them about the 11th again. It wasn't that I was "giving up without a fight" It's that Debbie clearly explained why we were not going to be able to due the show on the 11th. Madipalooza is reserving festival and convo lots for parking, therefore having to take several lots away from regular student parking they were not going to be able to give us C4 because then they'd be taking away too many major lots with parking on campus being tougher than ever. She had said that if it were possible to have the show that day it's be in the corner of R1, and they couldn't force students to move there cars, so if anyone didn't move their car we'd have to have the show around them (which did actually happen to a few cars when Dan was president). However maybe things have changed and they'd let us, and if for some reason I could get Ben Lundy to go along with reserving us C4 on the 11th maybe it'd kinda make Debbie give us the date?

Honestly just keep showing up at her doorstep as well. I'm pretty sure I met with her 6 or 7 times before the event. Once she realizes that you aren't going away it becomes very apparent that it will be easier for everyone involved to find a middle ground. Suggest some sort of win-win alternative as Jake suggested.

Hey, what's Debbie's last name? I was talking to a buddy in the PD about this and he said if it was the Debbie that works there, she retired recently and to get in touch with Sgt. John Campbell about doing it on the 11th.

This is what we have done at VT for shows where we could ...."reserve" lots. We made up signs that look very similar to what the campus parking services places at lots (yellow corrugated plastic with black vinyl letters in a sans serif font). We were given permission from the university to do so.. Basically, throwing up official looking signs saying to not park in this lot after this date was enough to get about 98% of the cars out. It worked better than expected.... however, you encounter the people that either don't give a fuck or they park their car and let it sit there for weeks at a time, so they never knew about not being allowed to park there. We were able to stand at the lot and tell people to go away, we were able to put the signs up, and we could even rope off a section of the lot, but we could NOT tow or move people's cars. Also, if somebody said they didn't want to move or that they wanted, even needed to park there, they could.

Another thing that we've done was give a formal presentation to higher ups. Basically, we made up a packet explaining why we believe we deserved _____ and sold it.

I have a sneaking suspicion that all of this "dates" hubbub could be wrapped up in a day if people would make some phone calls and/or be a little imposing in person.

Given all the uncertainty, I'm probably not going to make it down. I'm definitely not blocking any weekends off for any "official MM events" for the rest of the semester... this all should have been decided in early January and locked down.

Future officers, take notes.

lists 2 assistant directors and an associate director if you need an escalation path. 2nd Jake's note, assemble the avengers and head down there to get this straightened out. I wouldn't jump straight up the ladder, but push Debby and ask for a meeting with the associate director to work through their concerns and lock in the 11th, after all, you still have a ton of work to do once the day is set.

In the mean time before a time is decided I would delete the front page and begin working on something for that. You don't want people to get confused on the dates/times.

This is sad..... the first car show in awhile you haven't attended.

Guys, what the hell is going on? If you can't set up the dates, please step down and allow someone else to handle it appropriately. Sooner rather than later, please. No harm has been incurred to the car show yet and it can be salvaged, but if you folks won't do it quickly find someone that can.

It's not that I won't come, I just refuse to block off four weekends on my calendar when I have other potential plans. If I can make it, great. If not, oh well.

NASA and SCCA and BMW CCA all had their schedules for the entire year posted mid-January. It just isn't that hard IMO.

And re: officers being bad at posting on the forum... No sympathy from me there. We tell y'all every year that forum and Facebook communication is key. And it really doesn't take much time or energy to post a quick update from your phone while riding the bus home.

What I don't get is the fact that we were going for the set date of the 12th and we have people constantly saying oh no don't do that now do this or that or this or that. That alone is causing more confusion and panic then anything.

I can't wait for my grumpy almuni status so I can complain all the time instead of giving people the chance. Thank you to the others who are standing by and waiting around for the date to be nailed down. We appreciate it a lot. We as officers were just raised different and don't like to be a pain in the ass and annoying to people like some of you recommend. Sorry, that we have these differences in our lives. Go ahead and take your anger out on me. No problem!
