The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread!
chromecast does require app support, so you cant just mirror your screen onto your tv unfortunately.

Ill pick one up if a couple apps that i use like hbo go, pluralsight, amazon, and fios streaming add support.

Don't most TVs allow you to stream natively these days anyway? I don't mean apps within your TV, but just streaming content.

edit: Now that I think about it, that's just content that lives on the device, not online content.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Ordered it from amazon. No tax and prime shipping. $35, if it sucks oh well, not out much.

most tvs do have internet apps that let you stream from content services, as well as local network DLNA content.

i guess the biggest draw to this is that you control it with your tablet instead of navigating a clunky interface with your remote?

Yeah I was about to say, don't a lot of new TVs have all of these apps and Wifi built in?

FWIW, the native aps on my Bravia are terrible and I try to avoid them at all costs.

Nothing beats a long-ass HDMI cable!

Except something that does it wirelessly across all devices (assuming you aren't solely mirroring your screen/extended desktop) a the time.

Not if it requires app support to do it. It doesn't look like it supports playing local content, which most of mine is. It also doesn't (currently) support HBO GO. :?

Box is twice as expensive and must own a "widi" capable laptop?

Am I the only one who thought this would be awesome to stream Netflix/Play or my laptop while on vacation/traveling to the hotels TV?

if you own a laptop made in the last few years it probably already supports widi...

you said yourself you'd prob pay 100$ for it..and it doesnt require any bullshit app support

I have miracast (which is WiDi 4.0) and the reciever/dongle was $45.

its better than chromecast in that you dont need app support, its screen mirroring (like a wireless HDMI cable)
which is fine for laptops, but for phones (i use it with my nexus 4) it destroys the battery since the screen has to be on + using data + 5ghz miracast connection.

chromecast is better in that you dont need device support, and you can do other things on your device or put it to standby while watching. but what you can do is limited to certain apps and websites and no local/lan content.

neither is the perfect solution really

Am I the only one slightly geeked out about this? Not enough to put any money on it, but if it happens, might get work to buy it

It really has to do both things good. As a software dev, I'm mostly excited to have a true linux platform to develop mobile shit on, if I choose to do so.

not everything has hdmi out, hdmi ports can be a pain to get to, and you still have a wire running across your living room. still not perfect Wink
