Picked up this beauty today.

Springfield Armory XD-M 3.8 compact 9mm

Lots of accessories! The magazine loader I thought was one of the cooler ones.

New hollow point rounds called Critical Defense. They supposedly jam less than hydro shocks and penetrate heavy clothing better.

Was up in the air on 9mm vs. .40 but I was sold on the 9mm. I like the idea that it will do the job with the right rounds and is more accurate for target shooting.

Nice Purchase on both counts! The Hornady Critical Defense is what Julie carries, I'm impressed by the bullet design.

9mm is definitely the way to go. The "10MM Special" is pretty gay, if you ask me.

I also think the design of the 3.8 is a good compromise. With the "grip extension" magazine, you get (I think) the same grip length as the fullsize, but you can go smaller for conceal-ability. Good choice. Now, go get your CCW permit.

You are spot on, I compared the fullsize to this one and with the extension grip they are *exactly* the same size. That was one of the selling features of it for me...I liked that you could keep it compact if I wanted to carry or you can use the extended grip for more control during target shooting.

CCW is next on the list! I'm trying to convince Chelsea to come with me to the class to get her more comfortable with firearms, because her douchebag ex boyfriend used to get drunk and wave his guns around like a tough guy jackass. Maybe Julie wouldn't mind speaking with her and giving her some advice??

Nice pick up Lee! I have to admit the idea of a CCW intrigues me.

BTW, the FN FAL is on Top Shot tonight. They're all bitching about it.

I wouldn't mind speaking with her at all. I have been shooting guns just about my entire life, but wasn't until adulthood that I shot a pistol. And now I have my CHP. Just let me know.

Yeah my brother got some of those with his 9. My BS meter was mildly going off when the guy talked him into those.... I wonder if that plastic do-dad in the tip really does anything? It might. :dunno:

Yes I do. Some of our friendses have a bicycle race out there in the AM... Planning on hitting both. If you're interested in seeing them on bicycles, let me know and I'll get you details.

I hear ya. The guys at the gun store were pretty damn knowledgeable and the guy that sold me the gun said that he had a bag of 200 hydro shocks sitting in the back of his truck that he doesn't use anymore since these rounds came out :dunno:

So there are one or two guys on the XD forums that say they have done "FBI" tests on the Hornady CD rounds and they do not penetrate enough. It's good to see there are internet know-it-alls in the online gun world too

So quick question for you gun gurus.

I was told that "manually loading" a handgun can damage the extractor. I wanted to verify exactly what manual loading is.

1. Manual loading is opening the slide, locking it, and physically placing a round in the chamber. Then releasing the slide?

2. Or is manual loading inserting a loaded magazine with the slide forward, and then cocking back the slide and releasing it to chamber a round?

3. The proper way to load my XDM according to the manual is to pull the slide back and lock it, insert a loaded magazine and then hit the slide release button.

Is #2 okay to do as well as #3? Or is #2 considered manual loading?

#1 is what you do not want to do, but even if you do it, it will not damage your XD's "external" extractor. It is, however, a BIG no-no on 1911's, and generally a dumb idea to begin with. Use a magazine, FFS.

Most defensive handgun instructors teach you to rack or "slingshot" the slide to load a round. This builds muscle memory for your "tap, rack, bang" malfunction drills. Your slide catch should be treated as a slide catch. The reason for this is that under stress, your fine motor skills go out the goddam window, and all your left with is your gross motor skills...like using your whole hand to rack the slide.

In addition, you should learn how to properly rack a slide. Hint: If you are only using your thumb and forefinger, you are DOING IT WRONG.

You do it like dis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAlyOgm6p_A

Nice! That's how I have been racking the slide! And yeah I was under that assumption but I wanted to make sure. I don't know why you would manually load a round into the gun like that, it doesn't make sense to me. I just wanted to make sure by "slingshotting" the slide I wasn't damaging it in any way.

Still haven't been able to fire the gun yet Sad Probably will have to wait until next week. I have it locked and secured away in a safe and tactically sound location and have practiced retrieving and cocking it so that (like you said) it's in my muscle memory and I'm ready to go if it is ever needed.
