1989 Ford Taurus SHO - $500 running - ex http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/car/48322348.html - 220hp, N/A engine (better for AutoX than a turbo), 0-60 in 6.6->7.0sec stock, .81g on skidpad stock

$710 - brand new suspension (OEM Motorcraft Struts (SHO specific, pretty stiff) / Ebach Lowering Springs, all mounting hardware) - add $200 for Koni Adjustable Struts
$25 - remove cats & fabricate new Y-Pipe - good for 15+ HP
$400 - Nice Tires
$40 - New Plugs / Wires

$1675 without selling anything - all parts prices are retail.

Lighten the hell out of it - seats, carpeting, any BS under the hood that isnÔÇÖt needed, door panels (can replace interior for car show) - this cars biggest problem is weight (3300lbs stock.)

Not the best car for the challenge I'm sure, just food for thought.

i say we find an old 1980's 5 speed turbo caravan with fake wood on the exterior. we'll gut it, put r comps on it and a boost controller and haul all the shit to the competition in the enourmous space where the back seats were. then we can get a liscense plate for it that says "SHRT BUS", and people will adore us

Man too bad.. about 2 years ago our family had a '34 Ford Model T with suicide doors sitting in the barn on our farm. That would have been fun to play around with.

I know that a Committee was suggested to investigate rules, possible cars, etc, and report back to the MM Body. I propose we create a committee of 5, which should include at least one OG, to work over winter break and bring back a report on the feasibility of MM participating in the GRM 2006 Challenge as well as a detailed reccomendations list for possible cars, sponsors, etc.

I would also happily volunteer for this committee, should the Body choose to appoint me thus.

Guys i am all for the Supra Truck, down in my hometown area old toyota trucks are a dime a dozen, a lot of times are in great shape, i would say a good price range would be from 500-1500

if we are gonna do those we might as well do something that is different, cool, and goes fast...plus we have a lot of guys that know a lot about working on toyota cars

I don't know how the fair market value is calculated, but If you were considering going with a 5.0 mustang, you should buy a 4-cylinder notchback. The value of a 4-banger stang is less than half that of a GT. And the notchback body style is much stiffer than than the more common hatchback. It would be pretty cheap to drop a carburated V8 in there. Any engine in the windsor family would fit that chassis. That means you could even drop a 351W in there. Add no2 via a plate system, and that sonbitch'll fly.

This is all asuming that emmisions isn't an issue...

Justin, where can I get me a cheap-ass Toyota truck that is still in decent shape? Doesn't matter really how old (preferably not older tha me :-) ), just something that won't fall apart on me.

I can't believe such an endeavor is being proposed during finals. I see everyone has their priorities straight. Great.
I have a MIG Welder. I weld but by no means am I a "fabricator." My friend loves shit like this, and he's also a certified MIG Welder, also does wiring for his dad's company and he would be down. I like all the ideas proposed so far. I have a few suggestions:

1) We stick with stock drivetrain configuration i.e. no rwd integra or awd Metro. That's a ridiculous proposition and we shouldn't even entertain that non-possibility.

2) If we go EFI, we make sure that wiring will be compatible i.e. OBD-I and similiar harnesses that can be hacked. As much as I hate carburetors, American Iron might be cheaper assuming that we have some members that know how to fool with those things. Carbs are very much like clitorises, absolute mysteries to me.

3) May I suggest a 5 member committee composed of certified owners of junk cars (Dave/Rex), someone who knows technical aspect of cars that will be able to see possible problems in platforms in addition in addition to Travis, Rex and Dave. an asshole that will push for progress (Travis), and someone who is responsible/has time to keep the committee on track.

4) I read this month's GRM and that CRX-350 is fucking crazy, and we're over our heads, but fuck it. If we all split costs, it will be a really cheap learning experience and it'll keep us off the streets and away from drugs.

Friends with welders are friends for life :-). #1 would be out of our league for now too, IMO, so good to go ahead and lay that down. Good points on #2. I've never worked on/owned a carb, as with many of our club, but I know I'd like to learn if nothing else. As for #4, yeah its shit like that will prevent our club from winning the whole thing, but it has many merits in that many of us will learn a ton, it will be fun, and we can still get our name out and place well in a field like this.

I refuse to put a ford 351x into anything. I think the most retarded move ON EARTH was for Ford to have THREE DIFFERENT GODDAMN ENGINES WITH THE EXACT SAME DISPLACEMENT. It pisses me off. At least Chevy had the courtesy to give it's engines marginally different cubes.

i propose all of the commitee have track/show time in at least one of the arenas of the GRM competition. i dont see that as being a problem, but i just think it should be said.

Dave: I live in Chesterfield, which is right outside of Richmond and I have come across plenty of late 80's and early 90's trucks that were in decent shape, but the mileage is what the problem tends to be, over break I will check around...oh yea any auto trader or car trader mag is a good bet to find a decent truck as well

How much money are you looking to spend? My dad just bought a '97 exact same truck as mine, but is black (repainted) and has like 160,000ish miles on it and i am pretty sure that he is going to resell it after hunting season is over, I'll let you know with what he decides to do....
