If anybody wants to try more really good local VA wines, our family friend Paul Breaux started a winery years ago called Breaux Vineyards outside of Purcellville. It has been very successful and his wines have won international awards. I believe he even has his own bottling facility there. Very cool place and exceptional wines. You may have seen them in stores locally.

Breaux is good shit*. I can't remember the variety, but there's a leathery red they sell for about $40/bottle that I really like. I couldn't bring myself to actually buy it at that price though.

*Yes, a Virgina wine is actually decent.

Breaux's wines, decent but lacked something. I couldn't put a finger on it, none of us bought a bottle when we left to go to another vineyard which is rare for us.

At least in Virginia I trend to find the larger vineyards such as sunset hills and the vineyard at bull run "a bit" watered down. I assume in the interest of appeasing majorities? Not sure, my palette is not expert by any means, I just like what I like.

The Meritage at paradise springs is great, and a good atmosphere outside. Otium is my current favorite red blend, is at a horse farm, very small and friendly to dogs. Probably a 20x10 tasting room but they are secluded and seem to have no more than 15-20 people at a time. Plenty of games out front and let us leave our dogs off leash.

If you are in purceville, you would be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn't stop by crooked cellars. I didn't prefer their red, but their whites were very crisp and clean without tasting sterile. The big attraction is their cheese platter that they make theirselves. $10 for a platter that would cost $50+ anywhere else. Plus the owner is great, he loves to give our dogs large fresh bones right off the cow. We have to be conscious to limit that.

I could go on forever about a bunch but I really try anything. I avoid the big ones as I really don't like crowds. I prefer to be one of only 2-3 groups at a vineyard.

Gadino, which is just down the street from Inn at Little Washington, has some decent wines. We just had a case of the cab franc shipped to Mikey's house (they don't ship to WA) because it's a great wine for the price.

It should be pretty easy to find in VA: http://www.gadinocellars.com/retail

The girl and I really enjoyed Gadino as well- we happened to just "drop in" on a rainy fall day because we made a "throw a dart at the map" type of decision....turned out the owner and his wife, both from Italy, happen to be raised where I grew up in NJ. The husband also happen to be among one of the first graduating classes of my catholic prep high school school that I attended....small world, got free tastings and a bottle out of it.
Sold- 02 Wrangler TJ- 3 in. Tera/skyjacker lift, 32in. Pro Comp MT's, RC Swaybar Disco's, RC HD adj. track arm, borla exhaust, airaid intake
Then- 2010 Grand Cherokee Laredo- with the brutally fast mini van motor
......totaled
Now- 2012 VW Passat SE- Manual - 5 banger

The only VA winery I've ever really liked is Rappahanock Cellars.

I don't consider myself to have too highly evolved of a palate when it comes to beer and liquor but I do love me some german beers. My personal favorites are;

Ayinger Bräu Weisse -Hefeweizen
Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse

I pretty much love wheat beers, specifically weissbiers. Love that unfiltered taste and lack of that hoppiness, hate IPA's for the most part. I feel like a good weissbier makes a great year-round beer.

Outstanding Chardonnay. Not sure I've had anything else from them.

If you guys like wheat beers, Allagash White was one of my favorites: http://www.allagash.com/beer/year-round ... ao_confirm

I also did not drink many hoppy beers, they leave an awful aftertaste in your mouth

I really like Allagash White, although I think Tripel is better. I'm a sucker for beers with a banana finish that some triples have.

I actually tried that once when I asked for a weissbier at a bar, delicious and a solid choice since it's a little more available than the ones I mentioned.
