It's definitely a cost cutting technique, but it's a pretty valid one because most people don't really care about their garages like these guys said. If it's really important to you to have your garage finished off you can pay to get it done, but most people would rather save on the cost of their house than have the walls finished and painted in their garage.

true, I guess my attitude towards it comes from where the cost-cutting is coming from.
If its a home building company doing the cost cutting then it comes across as the home builder just trying to shaft the buyer and maximize profit, which seems a little slimy. (since houses are sold at market value instead of direct cost of building)
If its a homeowner themselves building the home and just trying to save some money where they can, then of course its the owners choice.

Why is a truck bed any different than a car trunk? The same reason it's okay in a truck bed is the same reason it's okay in a garage... to save money.

Whether or not the garage is finished is generally in the contract and available as an option... it's not like they just don't do it to save cash and whore the buyers.

I am sure this is a cost cutting technique, but it's a pointless one. I bet for 600$ I could have a crew in there to joint it out and paint it. It's not hard once the drywall is already there. The problem I have with it, is the 2 out of 5 steps they did do (joint, tape, skim the tape, sand, paint) were very sloppily done.

I dont consider a truck bed to be the same, which is why I didnt say truck bed. A truck bed is "outside" the vehicle.

20 houses (the little development of houses, for example) X $600 = big fat bonus for someone. The market sets the selling price, so do whatever you can to make the most profit.

I suppose. I just tend to think of things as a percent of the original cost. Either way, I'm hoping to get some paint on the walls this week, then get some more lighting installed so I can actually see what I'm doing in the garage

Not in the places I worked. Besides its a mute point when everything is 2-3x as much, a few hours isn't that big a deal, money in your account is.
