I know they also have slimmer cylinders in some cases.

Whats the difference between .223 and 5.56? I think I read a rifle chambered for one of these rounds can take both, but not the other way around (like, 5.56 can take .223, but a .223 rifle shouldn't be loaded with 5.56).
I though they were the same, just one is inches, the other is mm?

556 will take 556 and 223.... 223 will only take 223.

Cool. So whats the real world difference? What does one do better than the other, why buy one over the other, etc? Going along the lines of Rex's breakdown of handgun calibers.

Between 223 and 5.56 you mean?
Honestly, there isn't a discernible difference. Since my rifles are all chambered in 5.56, I buy whatever is on sale, be it .223 or 5.56.
Generally speaking .223 will be loaded with lighter bullets, 5.56 with heavier longer ones. But that's just general. To be perfectly honest there is absolutely NO REASON to buy a rifle chambered in only .223. That's just silly, except under very specific circumstances. You can't really tell the difference externally between the two except to look at the head stamp, and performance wise, they are quite close, with a slight velocity edge going to the 5.56.
For automatic firearms (rifles and pistols) you don't really get the "38/.357" dichotomy. .40S&W is a shortened 10mm, but you can't run .40 in a handgun chambered for 10mm. (Unless that handgun is a revolver, you dig?) It has to do with the feeding and headspace, which I won't get into, but generally the only firearms that can fire multiple "calibers" without making any changes (to upper, barrel, bolt, etc) are lever-action guns (some rare examples) or revolvers. If you want to know why, I can explain further.

Kaan already told you what to do, but I'll write it up anyway.

step one: call the place you are going to order from and make sure the local FFL you want something shipped to is in their database
- if it is, place the order and move to step 2
- if its not, tell them you will call them back after you call your FFL and get the information, call them back with your order and information, move to step 2
step two: after you order, call your FFL and make sure they know your name, the firearm thats being shipped, and the company that is shipping it to them.
step three: wait for your FFL to call you to pick up your new toy.

Anybody up for gun show in Chantilly on 4/16? Looking to buy me a handgun. I remember falling in love with the feel of the P226 or P229 back in the day... Gotta figure out which it was, and obviously hold a bunch of other shit before making a decision.

Rex just wants you to have a fighting chance when the red wave of the godless commie chinese sweeps across the Great Mississippi to liberate us from our greedy capitalist overlords. Or when the restless dead rise from their too-shallow graves and shamble into the night to feast upon your brain. Or when the Ur-Quan descend upon us from the stars, and their thrall armies seek to bend our own knees to their slimy green masters.
You'll thank me then.
