If you're looking for something a bit more local to your area I'd be happy to help you research some artists. There are two artists here in Harrisonburg that are not too well known only because everyone assumes "alley cat" is the place to be. These two artists have a combined nearly 40 years of experience in both art and tattooing. You tell them what you want with plenty of references (pictures, other media) and they can do it.

Their studio is called Artistically Inklined and they are cleaner than any operating room or hospital I have attended and worked at, including johns Hopkins!

is one of the tatoo artists 'Art'? i've heard of him because he's one of my ex's friends who i've heard was pretty good. i'm not sure where he works, but i know he was in Harrisonburg about 7 years ago

i dunno - i think that meaningless tattoos are pretty stupid. i think getting a tattoo is a strong action of self-expression. even if it just means that it 'looks cool', but for christ's sake - if you're going to get something, get it done right. it reminds me of the story i thought was hilarious: a chinese tatoo artist would imprint the chinese word for 'whore' or 'cunt' or whatever on dumb bitches who just wanted a chinese tattoo without knowing what it meant.

Mmkay, I'm just gonna post this where everyone can see it. I don't want to kill this thread but we need to address something.

If you make a post and say that you know the topic is controversial and expect some flaming, don't get all butthurt when someone else voices their opinion. This forum is not intended to be a soapbox for any one person or group. Rather, it's a place to plan events, encourage participation, and voice opinions. The Lounge is a great place for opinionated threads such as this one.

Second - a lot of the alumni know each other and enjoy poking fun at each other on here. It's tough when the alumni and current students haven't met in person. There is a lot you lose when talking online. Now, Adam and Rex have met each other at VIR a few weeks back, so I don't know what the intended tone of their banter back-and-forth really is. I hope and assume that it's in good fun since they've both met in person by now and have not ripped each others' heads apart.

Now. Back on topic. Quit the personal callings-out and such. Opinions and photos of tattoos, go!

I stand by my statement. Some people deserve to be made fun of. It's a fact. Notice I didn't say "If you have a tattoo, you deserve to be made fun of." That's not what I said and that's not what I meant. Your tattoo of frank, while not my "thing" is at least done well. Compare that to, say, Mr. Cool Ice. You going to tell me with a straight face that Mr. Cool Ice or the "Only god can juge me" guy don't deserve to be made fun of?

Frankly, there are all kinds of people that probably deserve to be made fun of. Juggalos. French Canadians. Spec Miata Drivers. People who saw "Gigli". The list goes on and on. And in that list are people with SOME tattoos.

My uncle is tatted from head to toe. With bad ass scary shit. If it can be seen or done (or smoked) my uncle's probably seen and done it. And alot of his ink is representative of that. I don't have a problem with that. But this guy:

Is 100% Grade A Douchenozzle for getting that, and he deserves to know it. My brother has two tattoos for pete's sake. One I make fun of him for and one I don't.

OTOH, a tattoo is far from the worst you can do to your body.

I'm not an impulsive person, and thats a very good thing in regards to tattoos. I've always wanted one, but have never seen or designed one, or even had an idea that I have liked for more than 2 weeks or so.

There are some good tattoos out there, and some really crappy ones, I've seen a lot I've liked and a lot I haven't. Some work on certain people and others don't.

That being said, I really enjoy other peoples stuff, and as much as I like frank the bunny, I wouldn't be able to get anything like that due to the fact that I'm only into certain things for a certain amount of time. I guess thats what makes tattoos good, but I'd rather throw it on some canvas and hang it on my wall until I get tired of it, and then look at them in storage in 5 years.,

i think you are making fun of people's decisions, which in some cases i can totally agree with. i am really not for making fun of peoples bodies.

Actually, I think that's a great idea for a tattoo to commemorate a child. A million times more interesting than a name in gothic font or a crappy portrait.

i think the abstract art stuff is really awesome. to have a tattoo on you that looks like its paint is pretty hard to accomplish as it is a lot of shading and fine detail to accentuate the "wisps" from the brush that would have provided such an effect.

the ones i am getting this weekend are actually three letters in a very bold script, along with a smiley face that i always draw. the smiley face is going to attempt to look like it was done with a marker.

No body at AI is named Art, its just Kathy and Scot. Kathy can pretty much replicate anything she is looking at with ease. and Scot specializes in japanese art but is also very capable of nearly any design. Scot prefers large pieces and Kathy has the skills to inflict the tiniest detail, as shown in the detail on my Frank tattoo on his nose, nostrils and eyes.

very valid point and i could not agree more with regard to getting something impulsively! somedays ill think to myself ahhhh what the F, ill get tattooed real quick, then go to class. some people are, oddly enough, able to do this and at times i am envious at their lack of planning for such a permanent modification. its good that you have that mindset!

i am sure you have seen some artwork and designs on the shirts and other apparel by the brand Affliction. some of those pieces are really elaborate and some inspire people to get a tattoo just like it. but why?! just wear the shirt! haha

I love some great artwork, and a ton of tattoos are awesome, I've realized that my body isn't a canvas... thats what I have canvas for. I'm really big into drawing and painting anyway, and maybe that helps because I can not only design things, but I can put the finishing touches on it as well. I still appreciate the artistic side of tats though, a lot of artists are super talented.

I really wish I could find something and have the balls to get it as a tattoo, but it just hasn't happened yet.

This. It's not that I dislike well-done tattoos, I just can't think of anything I would want to get as permanent - I change my mind too much. I dig the artsy stuff though. Way cooler than a heart that says Momma on it
