Jack, that sludge on the oil cap is a result of the car being driven on very short trips before the oil can completely warm. it looks like the PO has done this very often by the looks of it. there is a small amount of water vapor in a cold engine and if the oil is not brought up to temp for a decent period of time the vapor will condense into that sludge instead of "burning off."

that's not a particularly good thing, especially that far up north where the temps can make short trips especially hard on engines because the oil cannot fully warm up and protect properly since it starts off so cold. just my opinion.

you could probably run a high detergent oil through that engine on various long trips and get the oil good and hot and it would start to get rid of that gunk.

when you have a car like mine that is an oil snob you start to hear stories like this

So, I figured I'd share my decision with everyone. I'm not going to buy it. I feel like it'd be a good deal if it were 13k with the preventative stuff done to it (and a working suspension). There's too much up in the air for me to drop that money. I need to assume that it's not a 13k car, it's a 15-16k car. I'd rather pay 14-16 for a 98-99 M3 that's had the preventative maint. done. Also, I'm still in the city now and I'm in no rush. The only way I'd buy is if I found a *great* deal on a *great* car. When I get to SF... then all bets are off.

~12k miles/yr, that's kind of on the low side. I would guess the VAST majority of E36's now have at least 100k on them.
