Shrug, I think it's fine. I wouldn't do it in my car personally, but if someone has a beater they don't give a shit about, by all means ... I'll go and watch it wreck 8) When I had my old 'yota pickup in high school, I used to crazy romp it through fields and mud pits that weren't mine...as well as our own fields and forest =p Hell, I took that old thing on a dirt bike course !
I agree with Chan that I'm glad those people weren't doing it on a crowded road, and I know a lot of people can't afford to enter in costly events. At one of our last meetings, remember watching the video of the nitrous'd camaro and nitrous'd scooter illegally racing ? We all thought that was funny then and it didn't seem to bother anyone. It wasn't an MM event, so we're not liable for anything... if it was then there would be a legitimate cause for concern in my opinion.
As far as those guys though, more power to them. Fuck the police, make them earn their salaries. Don't worry about the old farts dude =p Legally, morally, we can safely say whatever we want about it because it wasn't our event~

ok, i'm not going to say things are right or wrong... but in no way do i recommend associating with "lookout"... some of their members have come a long way... some of them actually go to sanctioned, insured, events with safety personel around...
they could have come a long way from the first time i ran into them at Hizzy fest at BR... but i doubt it. three cars driven from va beach to pittsburg... no county stickers, no plates, and 7 non registration oriented tickets on the way.

one of the main reason the people get together is because there is no sanctioned event from november till march.. people are itchin to drift and test out new things/ parts and what not.. and if it makes it any better we had permission from the owner of the proporty to be where we were.. wasnt another person for miles

race car drivers have an off season too... but you dont see a spec miata shootout on 495... or a parking lot for that matter. you might see a car show up to a autox to see if their new alignment might work out or something of that nature.

They can afford the drift car, some bling bling parts but not a $25-$50 entry fee for autox/drifting event? That entry fee is a lot cheaper than getting a ticket.
FWIW, YMMV.

haha... oh man... BUSTED. *hangs head and kicks at the ground*
yeah, I certianly remember. I don't have much of a defense here. And saying that I applaud them, well that's a bit strong I guess.
I do support the club repremanding members for dangerous activities. A few speeding tickets, drunk driving, street racing... fortunatly none of our members so far have forced the club to excercise it's authority. I guess I, personally, don't support repremanding someone for doing something that is technically illegal but doesn't put innocent lives in danger. And to me, supporting a member for taking pics doesn't reflect poorly on the club. Heck, them just driving TO the deserted parking lot was more dangerous to others (even assuming they weren't breaking any laws driving there) than the drifting.
But hey, it's up to the current officers. And with talk about revisiting and ammending our constitution, it's certianly something to think about. Maybe include HOW a member would be repremanded and who would make that decision. Vote of members? Meeting of the officers? If they want to come down on a member for participating in an activity that, let's be realistic, isn't any more dangerous to innocent people or property than an autocross is (and hey, even an autocross DOES have bystanders spectating), I'd be surprised.
Just because an autocross or sanctioned parking lot drift event is LEGAL, and all the paperwork is shuffled correctly, that doesn't make it any more safe. It just gives the participants some legal defense for their actions and insurance if something does go wrong. And the sanctioning/control helps with safety, but we're still talking about multiple cars driving around in a parking lot up to highway speeds while other people stand around and ON the course. And these guys probably had some "control" too and most likely one car went at a time.
These guys chose to take the legal responsibility on themselves for an event that's similar to what we've all participated in. Trespassing my be their only real crime, but if we started booting members for walking through or driving through areas where they weren't supposed to be, I can't imagine we'd have any members left. And saying that pics of it are cool or whatever, in my mind, doesn't reflect poorly on the club one bit.

damn, 6 posts beat me while I was wasting my lunch typing.
Good post chan
My point was that "not being able to afford entry fee" is a poor excuse for jackassing around, thats all. If you're going to do it, just be honest - "I wanted to drift and act like a jackass because its fun!" because, well it is

How many runs do you get when you sign up and pay for an autocross ?
How many could you do on your own on a side street somewhere ?
No offense, but I doubt most of those cars are worth a third as much as the cash down payment I put on my car. Even with aftermarket parts.
When I upgraded to stage 2, I didn't wait until a track event and pay money to go test it out~

this has nothing to do with anything really but drift events are damn expensive if you ask me.. last hyperfest entry fee was $125 bucks and i went to another in b more that was $110. alot of money for the 6 to 8 runs you get ..i would never consider entering one of those becuase its so much money for what you get.. and also im not nearly competitive enough to go out and get sponcers/ and win prizes. so for the NONE professional drifters sanctioned events are almost unaffordable for what you get...when you can go to a big parking lot. (with permission and rip it up for free)
i guess no one here understands that point... im a broke college kid. ZERO bling bling

Honestly I have to say that I think Matt was right about the inconsistency of the 'image' thing. There's no need to drag up past arguments over the themes of the parties or censoring posts on the forum but I think for the most part we're self-policing and we don't need any draconian oversight.
For my money if people want to drift in a deserted parking lot then go right ahead. My problem is that people tend to not want to take responsibility if/when something goes wrong and stuff gets broken or people get hurt. That's why I am against illegal activities like that and that's why the club should not participate in that sort of thing.
If someone wants to do some of this stuff on their own they can go right ahead but if the heat comes down the first thing we'll say is that this person acted on their own. Whether or not the club takes further action I guess is debatable but I don't think this instance is what we'd be talking about.
oh DAMN. owned sirs~
Keep staring into the bling! It's gonna blind you!
I agree with Yelloa. I'd certainly pay for a sponsored, sanctioned event, but if I was bored, broke, and wanted to test out new parts or just fuck around... I wouldn't wait around for one.

The US drift events I've seen in this area have been $50 to enter. Autox, $25-$30, 4-8 runs.

Listen dude, I'm not jumping your shit, or trying to bash your choice of motorsport fun, most of us agree that drifting is fun. I'm just questioning your choice in how to enjoy that past-time. I'm also trying to prove a point about the post itself since certain powers that be have discouraged similar postings about involvement in other "questionable" things.
There's not a sanctioned event between certain months, well then you figure out a legal way to get your fix.
1) talk to the owner of a large lot (like the one y'all are pictured in)
2) get his/her signed permission to have your fun there
3) notify the authorties that you will be hosting your event there and provide proof of the property owner.
4) advise people if they fuck up it's their own responsibility to cover any damages.
5) if you really feel like covering your own ass since you're organizing the thing have people sign a waiver.
As it stands you coulda been nailed with, trespassing, wreckless driving, wreckless endangerment, destruction of private/public property if you'd had a run in with a very anal cop.
the cops ran us out of numberous lots.. the ones where all the pics are from is where we had permission.. the cops came because they hear the cars.. and we told them we had perrmission from the guy... they said its private property.. we cant write any tickets for anything becuase you have permission, but if you do it on the streets its a different story and they left.. simple as that.
this whole thing really wasnt that big of a deal. you guys have totally blown it out of porportion.

Not to mention that in the end, the people who get fucked aren't the folks who were holding illegal events. It's the motorsport clubs who can't find a place to hold a sanctioned, insured event because the property owners have a bad image of the sport. Or the liability insurance itself is too expensive. This has happened COUNTLESS times.
Now, we as Madison Motorsports don't have to immediately blast people for attending these kinds of events. Let's be constructive and help folks get their ducks in a row, and encourage people to hold legal, insured, and SAFE events.
My 2 cents.
My two feet.

This right here negates the entire point of my posts then. If you'd said from the very start "this was done with the permission of the owner of the private property we did this at", then nothing would have ever been brought up. In that case  for being smart about it..
You don't gotta have insurance, or the nod from some sanctioning body in order to have motorsports fun, you just gotta be smart about it and cover your ass so that you're not breaking any laws. If it's done that way then I don't care if NASA, USDRIFT, drift0, or whoever is on some banner at the event, you've been smart about it, you're looking out for the participants, and you're providing a much needed service.
Like I said from the very start I'm not tryin to bash ya at all, just trying to encourage you to do things legally while still having fun. Just tryin to look out for MMers and Motorsports in general.
